  1. CV has been their 2nd best relief pitcher all year. for some reason though, he seems to disappear for weeks at a time. I would only use him, Mota, or Shouse in the 8th. Riske has been really disappointing, imho. Seems like he is always one pitch away from giving up the game. I pray each night Gagne will be left off the playoff roster.....
  2. They are 52-28 since June 1, essentially half the season. That's a .650 winning pct. 13-13 and they'll be in the wild card. I think they'll continue at a .600 winning pct in September. That puts them at 15.6 wins. So I'll go 15-11.
  3. I want to change my pick of LaRussa. The Cards are 26-27 since July 1st. The market did indeed right itself and the Astros are making a play for 3rd. Coop was in danger of losing his job at the All Star break, though the team performance could hardly be blamed on him. Now they are overachievers and gunning towards 3rd. They just might make it.
  4. Raise you hand if you thought this guy would play 6 more seasons after he left the Brewers in 2002.
  5. I agree with Kurt. I am sympathetic to 44fishy's points, but in the end MLB in Florida has always been met with a collective "meh".
  6. In June I bought 4 tickets for a Saturday game 20 rows up from the 1st base dugout. There was nothing but standing room only tickets available, so I used the Stubhub link on the Brewers site. On Stubhub the tickets I selected were face value. When I finished entering my credit card payment the link to print out the tickets took me back to brewers.com. I printed the tickets and was not charged for any convenience printing fee. I believe if I had purchased them directly from brewers.com there would have been additional fees charged. At any rate, I think the Brewers are very fair to their fans.
  7. I hate the Cubs. Always have. I never understood why it was so quaint to love a poorly run team that took their fans money and never even tried to win.
  8. He will be our own little David Eckstein. If they make the playoffs, at some point one Tim McCarver is going to say the team winning pct is better since Counsell started playing 3B regularly. They'll show highlights of his previous World Series play every night. Not to hijack the topic but Durham is a borderline HOF player: 2000+ hits, 400+ doubles, nearly 200 home runs. Compared to the 2 baggers in the HOF, that's not too shabby at all.
  9. Actually, since the All Star break he was hitting like this:.280/.379/.520 .899 OPS. Of course that's only covering 29 plate appearances because Nedly hates him. Basically he had a horrible stretch the first 12 days of July, then went right back to being the stud he had been all year. Had his name been Hall, Counsell, Hardy, or Cameron, Nedly would have let Branyan "play through" the slump. But since it was Russell the Muscle, the kind of player who cheats by only hitting home runs and doesn't but or hit behind the runner like the way the game is supposed to be played, he was banished. He should be on the team next year but he won't be. Hall and Counsell should be off the team next year, but they will be.
  10. That seems the best way to maximize his value. Hardy's career at this stage is sorta running parallel to Tejada's. I don't think you move a player like from ss just so you can get some at bats for the next Alex Gonzalez. (Take your pick, either A.G., but I think that's really where Escobar's career path will lead.) Personally I'd look to trade Escobar in the offseason for some pitching.
  11. LaRussa drives me crazy but he deserves the award. And while we're at it, they should take the Greatest Pitching Coach Ever Award away from Mazzone and give it to Dave Duncan. It's time this guy gets some credit. On the other hand, if Manager of the Year goes to the manager who had the most influence on his team's record, then Dusty Baker should be unanimous winner!
  12. Player A: 31hrs; 95 rbi; 304/380/600 Player B: 33hrs; 92 rbi; 302/342/596 Who would you vote for? Player A: Ryan Ludwick Player B: Ryan Braun Braun is not a serious candidate at this time, imho.
  13. If they can fill spots 1-4 with pitchers better than Suppan the next two years then this stands to be a very good ballclub. Even in Soup is the no. 5 guy. As is the case with every major league player the Brewers hold rights on Fielder, Yo, Parra, Braun, Hart, Weeks, Hardy, Hall for 6 years, regardless if they are on one year or multiple year deals. At the time Suppan was signed these guys looked like the core and future of the team, except for possibly Braun, Yo, and Parr who were still in the minors. Most still do. At any rate, entering the 2007 season, Suppan's first, all these guys were at the mercy of the organizations for several more seasons. That's what I mean about the core players being locked.
  14. Suppan had 15 QS last year. He has 13 in 25 starts this year. I'm uncomfortable being a Suppan apologist, but I don't see any trend that he is worsening. In fact, he may be the most consistently average pitcher in baseball. You can argue he is paid too much for what he delivers, but the truth is he's not that overpriced compared to similar players in his market niche. (Washburn, Lilly, Silva, all are similar aged with similar contracts.) That the key talent and center of the team is young and under fiscal control enables the Brewers to throw cash at average veterans to fill holes. Signing Suppan served as notice to fans and MLB players the team was willing to add experienced veterans to fill holes rather than continue with recent patterns of auditioning NRIs and replacement level players.
  15. I've always liked Reed Johnson and laughed out loud when the newly stupidfied Blue Jays cut him in Spring. A smart pickup by the Cubs. The most annoying player in baseball is Derek Jeter. His smug "I've just soiled myself" smirk makes me thow my beer at the TV. he acts outraged whenever he doesn't get the call. It's that Yankee demeanor, that they somehow deserve more than the opposition that I can't stand. Jeter is the worst. I've always hated Jason Giambi and his "I'm on crack" eyes. Every baseball journalist in the country should be fired for mistaking his roid rage fits as intensity and leadership. I admit I've found him more tolerable since his near apology for taking 'roids a few years ago.
  16. Good discussion. Let me add my 2 cents. Sometimes pitchers don't pitch as well. Sometimes it's only for a game-Sheets' can't get the curve to break, another pitcher admits "I had nothing out there". Sometimes it last for weeks, months, or a season--bad mechanics, loss of command, working through an injury. Luck is an important factor but it's difficult for me to believe luck can cause a 2 run differential in ERA from season to season. 4 of the last 5 seasons Peavy had an ERA under 3. The difference between his ERA in those 4 seasons is probably due to luck. The 5th season, 2006, he had an ERA of 4.09. This is largely due to 5 starts in the first 2/3rd of the season where he gave up 6 runs or more. Were those 5 starts bad luck or was he struggle with a blister or some nagging issue over that time period?
  17. I think you are underestimating the value of a league average pitcher who makes 32-34 starts a year and pitches 190+ innings. You are selling Doug and Mark short if you think they only saw Suppan through baseball cliches. Ted Lilly signed with the Cubs for almost identical terms at the same time. 4 years/$40 million. Their career numbers to that point were similar. Also, you are not considering that signing Suppan sent a clear message the Brewers intended to be "players" in MLB from now on. Just changing the image of the organization had to factor in being able to sign Cameron, Kendall, and Gagne.
  18. Ladies and Gentleman, batting leadoff for your 2009 Opening Day Milwaukee Brewers: Juan Pierre!
  19. Good point. After all, 4 weeks ago on July 28th he was hitting .224/.314 and people were ready to bench him. Including me, who had defended him all year to that point.
  20. You are right. K:BB leaves out some info. You can get the same understanding by looking at both K/9ip and BB/9ip for a pitcher. K:BB can conveniently show how a certain "low" strikeout guy can still be very successful.
  21. I agree there will be some rebuilding aspect to the team next year. But there's no way Bill Hall is anything more than a super sub/Counsell type next year. Assuming he's even on the team.
  22. K/9and BB/9 are important, but I'm just as partial to K:BB ratio. K:BB ratio highlights pitchers like Maddux and Moyer and sinker types that may not get a hug number of K's but are quite successful for a long time. Maddux averages around 6K/9IP, but his K:BB ratio is an excellent 3.4:1. I know K:BB ratio is just using the same numbers as K/9 and BB/9, but it puts the emphasis more on a pitcher's control and command. Either K/9ip or BB/9ip can mislead. For example Daniel Cabrera had a nifty 7K/9ip rate last year. Better than Maddux' career rate! The guy must be a stud, right? Well, since he also walked 108 batters in 204 innings, his K:BB ratio is a disgusting and embarrassing 1.54:1.
  23. As they have on Rickie Weeks even though he's be all right since June. Conversely Kendall gets a pass because he was so hot in April. For some reason Bill Hall is immune to all perceptions. Bush is a wonderful mid rotation guy. He's better at his age than Suppan was and is going to make a lot of money someday.
  24. Letting Branyan go would be a mistake, imho. However it's clear Ned doesn't like him, so they have to find an "everyday" 3B. Bill Hall is no answer to any question other than, "how do the Brewers replace Craig Counsell"
  25. Cameron's OPS .839 Torri Hunter .824. Nice job, Doug. If Cameron keeps it up, I vote for the same outfield next year. It's really too bad Nix can't hit in the majors like he does in AAA. He'd be the perfect complement to Kapler on the bench
