  1. Laynce Nix is having a good year in Nashville too. I can't believe these two have no value as major leaguers. But they are getting too old to be handed an everyday major league job. Their best hope is do something like Kapler or Dillon; get with a team, have a great Spring, make the roster on Opening Day and never let up.

  4. 2007 NL GG winners in the OF: Carlos Beltran Jeff Francoeur Andruw Jones Aaron Rowand 2006: Carlos Beltran Mike Cameron Andruw Jones 2005: Bobby Abreu Jim Edmonds Andruw Jones 2004: Jim Edmonds Steve Finley Andruw Jones 2003: Jose Cruz Jim Edmonds Andruw Jones 2002: Jim Edmonds Andruw Jones Larry Walker Looks like it's mostly CF'ers and after you win the first time, you have a good chance to keep winning every year. The Gold Glove is perhaps the stupidest voting procedure of all sports awards.
  5. Swapping Weeks for Brian Roberts would probably be the most dramatic production increase of any possible transactions.
  6. Do LF'ers ever win Gold Gloves?
  7. Sorry for the one-line post, That is EXACTLY how I felt yesterday. My feelings exactly as well! I've been defending the guy all year, but after that play I thought, OK, trade him. My rational side is slowly coming back, but after two days of watching that Cubs lineup, let me just say I am really tired of all .220-.230 hitters in the everyday BrewCrew lineup. Since the All Star break seems like there's been this pattern of Fielder walking, Hart either getting a hit or striking out, Hall swinging a fly ball out on the first pitch, Cameron striking out, and Kendall grounding out to the middle infield. I've thought all year the Cubs couldn't hold the lead, but these last two games they are clearly the better team in every aspect.
  8. Of course when you try and project a 28 year olds counting stats it' s a sort of throwing-darts-at-a-number-while-blindfolded sport. Albert's been averaging 579 at bats over his first 7 seasons. If he continues to hit .353 this year and get his 579 AB's, he'll have 1549 hits. Pete Rose after his age 28 season had 1327, putting Pujols 222 ahead of the pace. If Albert plays through his age 42 season and averages 150 hits a season for the next 14 seasons, he'll end up with 3600+ hits. So, yeah, at this point it seems an insurmountable task for him to get to 4,000. On the other hand, he's young enough he can move even farther ahead of the pace for the next several seasons. He started playing everyday at such a young age he's been able to put up big counting stats while still young. He's the type of player who could play a long time, big power, high on base and batting averages, defensive position that is not too physically demanding. True his chances at this point may only be 2%, but he must have the best chance of any player in the game today.
  9. Jeter could be there by the end of 2011. ARod will be a couple years behind that. I don't think Junior can make it. He should retire after this season, but I'm sure he'll come back next year, convinced he can reclaim some of his past glory. 2010 is the absolute last year he will try to play. That won't be enough time to get to 3,000. Pujols has a chance to reach 4,000 hits.
  10. I hope he's invested well. Sorry to hear the news, Derrick. Thanks for the good times and the fun personality you brought to the game. Have the surgery and good luck with whatever decision you make after that.
  11. What most ciriticize about a manager is his in-game strategies. That's probably the most visible part of the job, but in reality may be the least time consuming aspect. I want to believe I could manage a game well; it's the other stuff that would drag me down.
  12. I don't think I would. I'd like the chance to be a GM though....
  13. I can't believe Bill Hall is playing. Honestly, I don't whine about Ned like others, but he has to stop being loyal to his "regulars" and concern himself more with winning every game.
  14. If the game is close, late, let's hope Ned remembers to pinch hit a lefty against a righty pitcher.
  15. I know they just won 8 in a row and you don't win every game and all that, but c'mon.. a manager needs to at least try to win every game. Villy in their best relief pitcher. If he was cleared to pitch last night he should have come in first. In fact, given Parra seemed to be on the brink of falling apart in the 6th, I think I'd lift the kid after that inning and start the 7th with Villy. I can almost understand letting Hall bat in the 9th. After all he did hit two game winning homers this week. But letting Cameron bat after that was stupid. Don't you have two lefty bats on the bench now, Ned? I would have gone with Durham for Cameron, Branyan for Kendall. What's really agrravating is Ned had no intention of using either Branyan or Durham against the hard throwing RIGHTY! While Kendall batted, Kapler was in the on deck circle. Stupid, stupid managing. They'll get crushed in the playoffs if that kind of thinking persists.
  16. I love the term "bubbler". Maybe the other stuff is unique to the area I live. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  17. Then for Cripes sakes what were Hall, Cameron, and Kendall doing batting in the bottom of the 9th against a hard throwing RIGHT HANDER last night with Hart in scoring position? Let's review: What does Branyan do best? Hit right hander fastballs all the way to Wisconsin Avenue. What is a Valeverde? A right hander pitcher that throws 97 mph. Absolutely the worst managing I have ever seen. They won't win a playoff game if that sort of strategy keeps up.
  18. It's true Hall started July on fire. Here's his rates for the first 10 games, going right up to the All Star break: .394/.429/.758 1.187 OPS. Pretty incredible 10 game stretch. Here's what he's done in the 5 games he's played since the All Star break: .190/.292/.476 .768 OPS. That .476 slugging is due to the two home runs this week, which have been his only extra base hits. I'd say this hot hand done been rode. He played one game in San Francisco, against a lefty starter, then the next four games against righties in St. Louis. He had a great game in his first game in St. Louis. Otherwise, I think it's clear he shouldn't be playing most of the time against right handed starters.
  19. My question is, why is Hall playing so much? I realize he hit two amazing late game homers in the first two Cardinal games. But he went 0 for 8 the last two games; both games the Cards started a RH pitcher. since the All Star break Hall is 4 for 24 with 8 strikeouts. On July 9th he was hitting .231/.290/.431. Right now he's hitting .231/.293/.434 . I'm not seeing the hot streak. It's hard to argue with any managerial decisions when the team just completed a 4 game sweep and is sitting a game out of first, but Branyan should have started at least two of those games. Hall is not hitting that much better against righties than he was earlier in the year.
  20. This is true. Love Uecker, but he is really bad on this. If there's a pitching change and going to a commercial, the radio guys should always give the score. Or when a run scores. Of course at the end of each half inning they tell us the score because it's sponsored by Kohls. Maybe I should sponsor the score whenever there's a pitching change. "we'll be back after the pitching change, the score, brought to you by joepepsi, is Brewers 12 Cubs 1." That would be cool. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  21. Yeah, I thought it was Seattle with the announcers that never say anything. I think their broadcasts are also the ones that have no sound from audience. Beltre hits a home run at Safeco and it's like everyone is in line for a frappe mocha at the Starbucks stand.....all you hear is a cricket chirping as he rounds the bases. Now onto the grammar comments. My wife and I moved to Wisconsin in 1990, (from Iowa of all places!). We get a kick out of some phrases from the locals. People here don't "mow the lawm", they "mow lawn", or "cut grass". My uncle doesn't "drive a truck" for a living; he "drives truck". But the worst phrase, the one that I hear otherwise intelligent, articulate people say, "I borrowed him my lawn mower". No, you loaned him you lawn mower, he borrowed it from you.
  22. I have ExtraInnings and I agree wholeheartedly. Some of the teams' announcers are just horrible. Some announcers don't say a word all game. It's like, "ball one" dead air...."strike one"......dead air..."foul ball"....."Jones is looking good tonight".....dead air. A lot of them don't mic the audience either, so even though it looks like the stadium is full, it's sounds like no one is actually at the game. Makes for a really dull broadcast. Who is it that has Rex Hudler? The Angels? He is so self consciously "cute" he's obnoxious. The Red Sox are very good, so are the Orioles. The Yankees are horrible; a bunch of homers who seldom know anything about the players on the other team. I like Brian and Bill fine, although it does seem sometimes like Brian doesn't really know what he's talking about; almost like he's just repeating something the producer told him in his ear piece. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  23. I'll be sorry to see him go at the end of the season but he must be released or traded for a bag of chips so the GREAT ALCIDES ESCOBAR can be rushed to play ss for the Crew.
  24. There are hundreds of tickets available for each game this weekend on Stubhub.
  25. Since the All Star break Billy is 4 for 19, with 7 strikeouts. Branyan is 3 for 12, 2k's. Hall has a great flair for the dramatic, but I'd still like to see Branyan playing against most righties.
