  1. I can't imagine he'll make it all the way to the Brewers having an option on him. The Nats should grab him. Until he gave up 4 runs in two innings last night, he ERA was a respectable 3.86. He actually has the lowest WHIP of his major league career this year.
  2. Better to be in first place and nervous, then in second and frantic, I'd say.
  3. As a platoon nickname, Counselnino will be difficult to top. I was always partial to Menchkins. I like Graffy and wish him well. Would rather he was on the Brewers than Counsell, but I don't want both, so will tolerate things the way they are. In fairness Counsell is having a quality Counsell type year....
  4. He's having a better year than Carlos Lee and this is a down year? I'll take it. He's doing everything well, just not hitting the home runs like he did last year....at least he didn't in the Spring. There's signs he back on last year's pace though, as TooLiveBrew points out. As it is, he's having a nearly identical season to Berkman's 2007. If that means next year he'll have a Berkman2008, I'll take it! Bottom line is, he's a patient homer hittin' slugger. This year is well within his range of expectations. Some years things just work out better than others.
  5. His swing is so much shorter now I think it's possible he can maintain a higher average than his career norm.
  6. The Brewers are only 2 wins behind their record at this point last year.
  7. It's occurred to me this season the most comparable player to him seems to be Brady Anderson. After 4 seasons and 1081 at bats, Brady was 27 with a lifetime average of .219. But he had that same combination of speed, power, and walks. His 5th season he posted .271/.373/.449, hit 21 homers, stole 53 bases, and walked 98 times. That was the start of an excellent 9 year run. I keep Rickie is going to put up those numbers this year or next, then give it a decade or so of similar performance.
  8. The Red Sox have done very well in exploiting undervalued markets. Granted, they also have the payroll to sign stars, but many of their bench players and relievers have come cheap. Ortiz, Casey, Cora, Crisp, Loretta, Bellhorn, Hinske, Kielty, Millar, Kapler, Pokey Reese, to name a few. For the most part these were players rejected by their previous teams, or they came cheap. And while they weren't all high OBP guys, the Red Sox correctly recognized they each were strong in one or two particular areas, so if use judiciously could be a valuable contributor to the team. For me that's the central lesson to Moneyball; figuring how to maximize your return without just throwing millions at every problem.
  9. I've been an Oriole fan all my life. This team is overachieving to be sure, but they're getting some nice pitching performances throughout the entire staff. Sarfate has done pretty well actually, and George Sherrill has proven once again, if you don't have a closer, invent one. The Orioles play solid defense. The pitching keeps the game close. The lineup is sprinkled with some nice hitters like Roberts, Markakis, Scott, and an improving Adam Jones, who so far, have been adept at the anti-stat term, "timely hitting". They took 2 or 3 from the Twins in the Metrodome. I'm going to the game tomorrow. Should be an interesting series. I hope you have read Daniel Okrent's book "Nine Innings".
  10. Nope. One of the Orioles boards I go to just post a topic titled, "Cito Still Sucks". It's somewhat ironic since most posters there also hate Mussina for being a trader becuase he refused to waive his no trade clause, then had the "audacity" to sign with the Yankees.
  11. Good points. I find myself counting the quality starts of a pitcher's game log if I am curious about him. There's value in a guy who's providing a QS half the time. Bush hasn't been doing that yet this year.
  12. Texas may have been his last best chance. When they signed him he said all the right things: he's matured, refocused, in the best shape of his life, and quit drinkin' and partyin'. Then, the night before his last start in Florida he got into a fight with teammates as they tried to drag his drunken fat self out of the hotel bar. Add in a couple clubhouse hissy fits already, and you have a very troubled guy who's clearly not off the sauce and may never be. This all after he assured everyone he was clean and sober. Fool me once....
  13. How so? He should have stole home?
  14. He's not this so far this year, nor was he last year according to his ERA. But for his career he's been average. 4 of his last 7 starts have been Quality Starts. He's pitched to a 4.17ERA in his last 4 starts. Could be mini "hot" streak, or a small sample size, or it could be he's eeking his way back to average after a bad start to the season. That's amazing! It still begs the question, what's the winning pct. for a team when the starter goes 6ip, 3ER? The 68% could be the sum of teams winning 90% of their games when the starter goes 6ip, 0-1ER + 75%winning pct when starter goes 6ip, 2ER + 45% winning pct when starter goes 6ip, 3er. Or something like. I can't seem to find that sort of data anywhere.
  15. Maybe the true test of the Quality Start idea is to check the winning pct in the majors for those 2,318 QS. Better yet, I wonder what the winning pct is for teams in games where the starters met the minimum standard, 6ip, 3er. I'm gonna guess it's better than .500. If it's something like .550 then the concept of Quality Start is useful and valid.
  16. Bush has registered quality starts in 3 of his last 4 also.

  19. I should change my user name to coreyhartrocks.
  20. Granted, it's a bit of a silly stat, but a league average pitcher is nothing to scoff at. Those types sometimes fetch $40 million/4 year contracts. Bush's value is increased slightly due to his ability to remain injury free. But my point isn't that Bush is a great pitcher. It's what do you expect to get out there that is better than league average? And what are you expecting to pay for it?
  21. 3 of his last 4 starts are Qualtiy Starts. He's averaged 6ip, 4.17 ERA over that time. Just sayin.......
  22. Are the Padres really going to cut and run? They've been playing better of late, are only one game out of 2nd in the division. Chris Young can come back anytime, though I don't know his status. Though they have a losing record they are closer to first place than the Brewers. Seattle will never trade Ichiro of course, but they do seem the most likely team to hold a fire sale. Although Maddux would be a positve addition to the club, I'm not that interested trading quality prospects for another "innings eater". I realize it's the in thing to hate Dave Bush, but he's lower his ERA .83 runs in his last 4 starts, 3 of which fit the Quality Start standard. 6ip per game, 4.17 ERA last four games.....
