  1. The positional adjustment for 3B for runs above replacement is around 3. The positional adjustment for 1B is about -12. I think that if we're going to move Gamel to 1B, we need to show that his defense would be 15 runs better at 1B than at 3B in a full season. I find it extremely difficult to believe that he would be THAT much better at 1B than 3B.
  2. Hughes is back on the NY good side after the spring. He's an injury away from being on the starting rotation. Barring that, he'll be there next year. If we're going to target someone, it would have to be Kennedy. I don't see Hughes being moved for anything but top tier talent.
  3. If Cruz was just a throw in, then yeah, it sucks. The guy tore the cover off the ball in the minors. I would have rather kept him and not gotten either Nix or Mench.
  4. As someone that has worked as a bouncer... & proud to say that it was at a bar that actually gave a crap about its patrons' state of intoxication as opposed to only caring about another quick buck... while I support your spirit there, putting the onus on the bouncers -- often/sometimes the only sober people in a bar -- just isn't fair. But I agree more needs to be done. It's disgusting, but I'm not sure how you effectively legislate against selfishness & ignorance http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif I bounced for a bar that was a "get the extra money" kind of bar. There were many times when I would tell them that someone was overserved, and they would ignore me because the owners were putting way too much pressure on the managers to bring in revenue. The same bar told me to ignore IDs that I knew to be fake for the same reason.
  5. See Pierre, Juan. For that matter, Escobar, Alcides. There have been a lot of people who bat .300 who swing early and often. Even Braun and Hart would fit in the category of high BA/relatively low OBP.
  6. I've always thought plate discipline should be considered the 6th tool. This probably won't happen, but I'd love to see it become part of the discussion when talking about toolsy players.
  7. Gallardo is on pace for 32 himself, so I think we'll be alright.
  8. Hart is looking a lot like last year right away. Up 2-0 in the count with 2 on base, swings at a slider low and away and pops it up. I have such a hard time understanding his thought process. Is his pitch recognition that bad? Even if so, just swing and miss. Don't force contact at 2-0, take the strike and wait for something better.
  9. Is it the 2nd one where Euck passes out from too much Jack Daniels and Monty calls a play? "Fly ball... Caught" or some variation of that like "Ball hit... Caught"
  10. Take off every ZIG! PM me my candy, please. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Anyhow, I tend to echo the sentiments of many of the people that this was probably written in jest, but it isn't well-written. Subtle satire is a great thing, but this isn't really satire. It doesn't have any elements of mockery or imitation, it comes off as completely genuine. I'm not sure if that's a product of laziness or trying too hard.
  11. Escobar does not fit in any place but SS. He could MAYBE fit at 2B, but his bat would need to get better. Regardless, there is no reason to think that Rickie won't be a more productive hitter, even with a .240 average. We can talk about "what-if"'s all we want, but you can't say that Escobar could be a .300 hitter this year, and not talk about how Rickie could easily carry a .370 OBP (or higher if we're talking about high-end projections). If Escobar hits .300, his OBP will still not crack .350, and his SLG will not be much above .400 and most likely below that. If Rickie hits at the high end of his possibilities, we're looking at a .380 OBP and a >=.450 or so SLG. Escobar's glove would have to do a LOT to fill that hole, and we would not have anywhere for Rickie. I don't want to come off as condescending, but it's absurd to put Escobar at anywhere but SS at AAA this year, certainly for the first half of the season. The guy is ++ defense at SS, and could feasibly carry a league average OPS at that position. At 2B, he'll be a +1/2+ defender with a below average OPS, and end up being at best equivalent to Rickie. I do respect him for the statement that he's willing to switch positions, but there's absolutely no reason to. Keep JJ and Rickie for now, and reevaluate at the trade deadline/offseason. We really, really need Rickie's OBP this season.
  12. Can is the key word there. Most of the time it's funny for a little bit because you're laughing at both of them. Eventually those all become the same, though.
  13. There is some use for a "flame war" if done only as a battle of wits, with both sides agreeing beforehand that it's just that. I've read some pretty hilarious flamewars on tuckermax.com's messageboard where two friends decide it would be fun to spar. I occasionally do this with people I know from XBox Live on messageboards just because we enjoy it. In a true "flame war" between people who aren't intelligent and funny, it's pointless and stupid. It can also be pretty funny with one intelligent person vs. a dumb person.
  14. "1/16/0 1/7/0 1/10/3 2/10/0 2/14/0 " ------------------- As a note, those pitch counts are inaccurate. The box scores only reflect what the result of the plate appearance was, and not the actual total number of pitches. A walk on 12 pitches would be scored as 4 pitches, A strikeout on 8 pitches would be marked as 3 pitches, and a hit is marked as one single strike. It comes from the fact that it's spring training, and it's not necessary on a mass-media scoreboard to log every pitch. I'm sure the actual counts are out there somewhere. On another note, think about the 2nd to last outing there. 6 batters, 10 pitches. How plausible is that, really? He would be putting the ball in play on the first pitch half the time.
  15. He's most likely to get just a little dry-humping, but ultimately will not get to go any further. Even the Nationals are better off without contracting this kind of disease. MODS: This is in jest, hopefully it's not too vulgar. Sorry if it is.
  16. "If [Escobar] is a .360 OBP/.350 SLG player" If Escobar carries a .360 OBP with his defense, he BETTER be playing every day. I'll take that kind of OBP in the 9 hole (when they realize that the pitcher should bat 8th) with stellar defense every day on any team. He'd be worth 4 WAR minimum with that line.
  17. I can get to 3 of the bosses and beat 2 of them. Zangief and Tyson are beatable, but mother brain is just too much. So many damn projectiles coming all over the place, and I die everytime. The Kirby land part is fun. Wall jumping is really hard to get used to.
  18. "But it would result in the same hitting lineup as if we had moved Hardy over to 3B and would keep Hardy happy." --------------- We would be wasting Escobar's plus fielding and emphasizing his bat (or lack thereof). I would be furious with the team if they made Escobar a 3B. His value would be at best league average at 3B (at BEST), and a minimum of league average at SS. He would be worth a lot more in a trade as an SS than playing 3B. I concur that one of the 2 will have to be traded. There's no way around it. Both of them are pretty much at maximum value right now, so at some point this season/next offseason is the time to pull the trigger. If we're out of it at the deadline, trade Hardy, if we're in the hunt, trade Escobar. Or, wait until the offseason, where we sign JJ long term or trade him.
  19. By then we'll still have 60 more years to go to catch up, though.
  20. Not to try and offend you or anything, but this is not a good mindset. You should always be willing to consider an argument. Objective analysis certainly has its merits, and to completely dismiss it based upon subjective observation is willful ignorance. EDIT: For another example of someone who has a lot of errors, but is widely considered one of the best defenders in the world, look at Alcides Escobar. He has had 20+ errors in each of the last 3 season in the minors. There hasn't been a single scout or person who I've seen that said that he was anything but spectacular with the glove. Now, am I saying that Hall is as good as Escobar, of course not. But there's certainly comparisons to be had in terms of range causing more errors.
  21. Weeks Fielder Cameron Braun Hardy Hart Gamel Pitcher Kendall
  22. Ian Kinsler, Dustin Pedroia, and Dan Uggla come to mind as well.
  23. "who is growing more-and-more into a leader" ------------------- The shoving match with Manny Parra will always make me think he isn't a leader type.
  24. For what it's worth, Fangraphs has his value at $20.4 mil last year, and $18.1 mil in 2007. I can't see that sustaining though. I think the odds that he is worth 40 over the next 4 years are pretty good.
  25. "Svuem can get through to Hart (and Bill Hall, and Rickie Weeks)" ----------------------- Rickie most definitely does not need help waiting for pitches. The guy has great discipline. He needs to work on making some more consistent contact.
