  1. Is there any way to get Manny Acta from Washington? I think he would be my choice (this is not blue, I honestly believe he's the most progressive manager in the league). If we can't get him, get a guy who doesn't subscribe to baseball myth and lore. I figure those guys actually come pretty cheap, so we shouldn't need to spend more than a mil a year for him.
  2. The forearm issues he has right now are very scary. Before this, he's had only one arm related injury (triceps strain?). His value definitely went down by getting injured at the end of the season because forearm issues have been shown to be elbow related. There have been a lot of pitchers who went out with forearm tightness who ended up getting Tommy John.
  3. He was 21 years old when he pitched that game... I don't understand how fans can possibly hold a 3.1 IP 3 R start against that young of a player who had already pitched 220 innings that year between the majors and the minors. And even so, it's not like he blew up and gave up 8 earned in 1.2 innings.
  4. I would start him against righties for sure. If we're desperate for a defensive improvement late in the game, throw counsell in there.
  5. If you're going to talk about "should have" won this game, talk about how we've stolen a lot of games in the last 2 innings this year as well. 3 of 4 at STL in the 4 game series come to mind for me. Stop being so reactionary, people. We were 20-7 in August. That's a pretty absurd record. 2 losses mean almost nothing in the long run. They're just a part of the 65-70 we're going to have this season.
  6. I've only been intensely following the Brewers since 2005. Before that, it wasn't that I didn't support the Brewers, I just didn't care about baseball. Baseball is now my favorite sport to follow because of the heavy statistical nature of the game. It's like poker, except it's a sport.
  7. Here's a decent argument as to why CC is more impressive than Harden thus far: http://www.hardballtimes....main/article/not-so-fast/
  8. "I'd trade Suppan for a bag that could hold doughnuts" I second that. Trade him for former Packers center Frank Winters.
  9. I think it's entirely possible that Sabathia wins if Webb doesn't win 22 games. The BBWAA has done some crazy stuff in the past, and giving a theoretically 1.60 ERA 14 win pitcher in half a season the Cy Young seems entirely feasible. He has clearly been the best pitcher in the NL since coming over.
  10. "nobody would go for it on 4th down" As a sidenote, I think more coaches would be going for it on 4th down if they were going by true probabilities. They just don't want to face the consequences of losing a long-run winning decision.
  11. "If the only positive outcome is to win the game, can't you make it simple and say that any decision which leads to that outcome is a good decision?" Because hindsight is never a good way to judge the validity of a decision. EDIT: Let's use a poker analogy to illustrate the point: You have a 2 and 7 preflop. An opponent pushes all in and shows you AA. You call anyway. You win the hand with 3 twos. Does that make it the correct decision to have called in the first place? Or every time in that same situation? If you say 'yes', then there is no argument here because you don't know probability and game theory.
  12. I've got no real issues with this callup. I'd like to see Kaplar and Nix platoon the LF spot to see what he can do. I don't expect anything amazing but who knows, maybe he'll get really hot and overperform like crazy. If he doesn't, it's not really too much of a loss.
  13. My brother played hockey for the University of Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves. His number was 20. I eventually needed to shorten the name for some reason and settled on cwolf. That was something like 10 years ago and I've been using it since. The '12' is my favorite number.
  14. A walk also advances a runner. Regardless, there is absolutely no justification for putting Counsell in over Branyan on the left handed side of the platoon. No amount of grit or small ball or defense is worth a .300 difference in OPS (or even the more realistic .150 difference they would have if Branyan wasn't overperforming), especially if they have the same OBP. EDIT: You *might* have an argument here if CC got on base better than Branyan, but he doesn't. They bat for nearly the same average, nearly the same OBP, and Branyan hits the ball a LOT harder.
  15. When you have the guy for whom the KUG was named on your team, then I should hope you are leading the league in grittiness.
  16. But even so, don't you think some other team would want him and claim him? I have a really hard time believing no one was willing to claim him.
  17. If LA claimed Dunn, then Cincy would just pull the plug on the waiver. With Dunn being claimed off waivers, Cincy would get no compensation for Dunn. So there's no reason that they would allow that to happen for their own good.
  18. I think as long as the Cubs are not playing the Mets, Phillies, Marlins, or Cardinals, I will 100% root against them. I think the only team that they're playing against that I can really root for them though is whatever team is closest to us in the WC race. Right now, that's the Cards. If the Cards fall apart and the Mets/Marlins start winning, then I'll root for the Cubs only against whoever is higher in the standings.
  19. I seriously think that the fact that Branyan has hit two "late-and-close" pinch hit homeruns is making him want to keep him as a pinch hitter only. It's definitely the kind of logic I could see Ned using.
  20. If the race is close, I am just fine with sending out CC and Sheets on the last days of the regular season. I also don't really have too much of an issue with sending Parra/Suppan/Bush to start the first game of the NLDS. CC and Sheets would probably pitch games 2 and 3 then, which would also be fine.
  21. Did anyone else notice how Turnbow managed to be -6.9 in only 8 games? That's pretty impressive in a not-good way.
  22. "i can't believe most of you are just conceding the division with two months left to play. as july showed us, anything can happen. the cubs won't be hot for the rest of the season. we will have a chance to close the gap. we are five games back, with 6 to play against the cubs." I don't know if it's conceding the division, but this is more about assuring a playoff spot (which is WAY WAY WAY more important than winning the division). Best case, they both lose by going extra innings in every game in slugfests. EDIT: Personally, I really don't care what happens in the Cubs-Cards series as long as we win. If we don't then I definitely want the Cubs to win.
  23. I know it's better for the Brewers if the Cubs sweep, but man is that hard to root for. Every fiber of my being wants the Cubs to lose every game they ever play for the rest of my life, but the reality is that we need to ensure the playoff berth more than we need a bigger chance at winning the division. ...Go Cu... I can't do it.
  24. I'd love to see Rickie take the same approach he had in the minors up here. I don't care if he doesn't take as many walks if he hits the ball better. If there was a way to make him bat leadoff, but not realize it, that'd be perfect. I figure that he'll bat more towards .275 with that approach with an OBP of .355ish and a much better SLG. But who knows, maybe that's what he's doing. I'd love to see a whole month of production anything resembling his production in the minors and college. It's not impossible, but not likely either.
  25. "I'd love Lawrie at C or 3rd. The organization is probably going to lose a catcher or a 3rd baseman to the Indians. I'd put him at the position the Indians take." I echo that sentiment. He should be more than enough of a replacement for Lucroy or Green. I want the Indians to take Brantley, so I don't know what would happen if they do, though.
