  1. It seems to me that the Braves rode their starting pitching to about ten division titles. But that's all water under the bridge so to speak. the fact is that the Brewers, in order to stay competitive, are going to have to produce more pitching--both starters and relievers. Yo and Parra maybe a great start--now lets add some relievers. We're probably gonna be ace-less next year--let the machinations begin!
  2. Now, correct me if I'm wrong. But I seem to remember a Bill James article on the success of swinging at the first pitch. It was ugly, super low chance of success. And what's more frustrating than an a bat that goes: first pitch: swing, grounder to second, one out. et al.
  3. The Crew is fine. The Cards will come back to earth. I'd worry a lot more about the Cubs. If they go on a winning jag without Soriano, well, we might have a small problem.
  4. I think that everyone here is right. Turnbow can be lights out; Turnbow just plain sucks. I know it's almost a contradiction but it seems true. I think this is a classic case of a guy who needs a trade, that maybe a different organization can help him.
  5. The only guy I worry about is Hall. Otherwise I think we'll be fine. Our two boppers aren't hitting and we're stilling winning. In fact this might be the best thing for Braun. He hasn't struggled yet, it might do him some good, and he might learn about making adjustments. I'll give them to the All-Star break.
  6. Good point. Double standards exist in every sport. That's part of what destroyed the NBA for me. I think hot dogging creates brand recognition, which is really the point. Think of how the NFL wants celebrations but only certain kinds of celebration. Coupled with that, we live in less humble times. I remember when athletes used to try and not draw attention to themselves. Now, it's required. On the other hand, sports can be so conservative in the sense that everyone has to fit the mold. In that case hot dogging would seem like a small piece of individual expression. Whatever it is, as long as it costs the Cubs players I don't care much.
  7. Past: clearly Santana Present: I'll take Beckett It just looks like Johan has a lot of miles on him, and 30 homers he gave up last year? Did I hear that right, 30?
  8. I agree with this. In fact I was thinking last night that Gross looks like "Dead Man Walking." I wonder if he's been told something? I just can't imagine the Crew getting rid of him because they're so short on lefty bats.
  9. I agree with you, we're not going to be able to obtain anything that will make us significantly better now. That time has passed. Any improvement the Brewers experience will come from: A) Sheets staying healthy B) Yo continuing to develop C) Parra proving himself But three of our starters have kinda bitten the dust--Cappy, Bush, Vargas. I don't think that's surprising, at least I'm not surprised. That's why I mentioned before, although it's water under the bridge, that I'd be for a Young/Garza type trade or a Haren type trade, etc. Now, realistically I understand that would be hard to do, but I'd try. Look, the Brewers have an above average rotation with more upside than say the Cubbies, but potential is not production.
  10. Whoa Gopher! Look I know you're an intelligent guy and I enjoy reading your posts, and I hope your optimism trumps my pessimism, but please don't tell me what I think. In fact I did think we would find a closer for this year. Now lets have a beer and some laughs cause believe it or not I'm on your side and anyone else who's a Brewer fan even if we disagree.
  11. The bleakness I'm talking about is the lack of minor league prospects. I'd be shocked if they can afford Sheets, but hey I've been wrong everyday of my life just ask my ex-wife. The way were starting to churn out major league position players you'd think some of that would rub off on the pitchers. We got Yo, and that's true and wonderful. Now produce one Yo-type starter every other year or every third year--we're still a small market team and will live and die by our minor league system. But hey, back to Sheeter, despite all the money that's coming in I still don't believe it. Major contracts are on the horizon for Prince and Ryan and maybe JJ and if Yo breaks out. What if they keep Cameron? What if Suppan is untradeable (be honest do you want him on your team at that salary?). There's plenty of money that's gonna be spent. Plus, if the money is flowing then it's flowing to big market teams as well, and if they earmark and player and really want that player, well, there's nothing the Brewers are going to do about it. And while I would contend that Melvin can find a closer (he seems to have the knack) that's very different from finding a real live ace. And while I remain extremely pessimistic about next year's pitching staff, our offense might be the best in baseball next year. I'm also really optimistic about the long term state of our minors after we pick up the four extra picks this year, and the four extra picks next year for Sheets and Gagne if the lion share of those picks are pitchers.
  12. The problem with "some good ones get away" is that this is an organization that has never produced a plethora of pitchers. You'd expect that the Crew would lose some good position players, some like Carbbe. But pitchers? This organization needs every pitcher it can get. I agree, Thatcher not getting a shot was diabolical, and Melvin and his minions need to be held accountable for that. I understand the Safarte and Eveland point of view, and really can't argue about it. But wouldn't you really have both of them than Jeff Weaver right now?
  13. How about "Our Savior" for Braun. It's simple, a clear meaning, and it has the advantage of being slightly upsetting to the "undies in a bundle" crew.
  14. "Run Fatboy Run" Guess Who?
  15. And if it doesn't work out maybe we can trade him for Wes Helms if his club pays for his buyout.
  16. I've always liked Jeff Weaver because it's so easy to imgaine him pitching stoned outta his gourd. But seriously, I like the Bush is injuried scenario.
  17. Benny reallly is his own nickname. Uecker: Ben Sheets...(interrupted) Powell: Everyone does Bob; what's your point.
  18. Rickie Reeks because he plays defense so well.
  19. Mike Riviera because he takes a vacation between starts
  20. Okay, I like it if it's the beginning of their Frank recognition that their starting pitching simply isn't good enough for a world series club. Is it an improvement, no. But sometime you just gotta take baby steps.
  21. I love this. I'm glad the Sox are so in the head of the Yankees that they are reverting to superstition and wasting time.
  22. You know you might have something there. Each of those guys must have known they had major league stuff and the club really never gave them a fair shot, except maybe Eveland. Maybe being in the minors that long takes the edge off, maybe they do start thinking "we'll I guess I'll never get there." In any case those three do make a small case that maybe the Crew should take a few more chances, although I know it's difficult when your team might be a contender.
  23. Does anyone else see Mota and Turnbow as essentially the same pitcher (though Mota can go extra innings). They seem like that kind of pitcher with excellent to electric stuff that never quite learn how to handle it properly. I'd like to see Turnbow get his chance in the 8th inning with the usual proviso of bringing him in at the beginning of an inning. I think that Turnbow's value need to be increased.
  24. Thanks Fatter--I didn't know it was so gruesome.
  25. Geez, I just assumed it would be Gorman Thomas. Remember when he was traded. The TV people followed him to a tavern. He was drunk and crying. It was really ghastly. He loved the Brewers so much, and the fans just seemed to adore him even in a way they didn't love Yount. I remember asking a buyer for Boston Store about jersey numbers, and she said that Thomas jerseys outsold Yount almost two to one. Hated: how can it be anyone other than Sheffield. A true pariah, a true mercenary--he had dollar signs for a soul and as much class as a guard at Auschwitz.
