  1. I'd like to see another lefty as well. I thought the Crew was higher on Stetter? Do we still consider Shouse a LOOGY? I thought he had improved against righties that he could face them over the course of an inning?
  2. I think it's kind of fun to compare Fielder to Braun right now. Fielder doesn't look half bad, trying to spray the ball around, fouling off pitches. Then there's Ryan, poor Ryan, his first taste of reality in the big leagues. He's completely lost. But what I appreciate is this new belief of his that the strike zone actually extends 12 inches from the outside corner of the physical plate--you gotta admire that kind "stick to your guns" attitude.
  3. The more I think about it the more I think we have to keep Gwynn in the organization. I just don't see a replacement for Cameron after this year, and with the loss of Sheets our starters are going to be a priority in the off season. Now, I'm assuming the Brewers let Cameron go to free up money for said pitching. That's why I would DFA McClung and send Gwynn down and keep him rather than trading him.
  4. Are the Brewers undersetimating their minor league pitchers? Or is this a case of do-nothings turning it around after a kick in the pants out of an organization? Something else?
  5. Small ball is something generally to be avoided, but when you do need it, it better be done really well or you're gonna miss a golden opportunity. I see small ball as mostly a late inning thing when only one run is needed.
  6. I actually feel sorry for all those guys. They are forced to ask dumb questions that are acceptable to a largely uniformed TV audience. I must admit to having a soft place in my heart for Davey though. He's like our Ron Santo. When ever he talks sympathy just pours forth. Otherwise I'd just as soon dump Trenni or anyone else in her position. I'd replace her banter with more updates around the league, but especially concentrating on our own minor league system. I've got nothing against her; it's just that I've got no use for her info.
  7. This can be a tough call. Sometimes I'll stick my nose in if the conversation is: a) close by, and b) humorous or friendly I rarely try to correct others as my growing senility has led to all sorts of problems.
  8. Yeah, I'm hoping on Pena for that closer role, but I'm skeptical. In fact I think the Brewers are going to take the best college closer available this year. I'd rather have Main than Cain.
  9. Losing to Josh Fogg and Nelson Figeroua brings us down to 52 games. Beating Cueto, who clearly was overmatching us, was one in the good column. 51 games to go.
  10. I'm with you on this one. The Brewers starting pitching looks bleak after this year. I hope they take a true win now approach because it's gonna get ugly next year. There really is no alternative but trading or signing more Suppan type pitchers in the hopes that Jeffress turns out to be real. I'd actually support a monster deal like the Young/Garza trade next year. But hey, this year's gonna be exciting so lets bury our heads. P.S. We'll probably need a closer as well next year unless we go with Riske which is gonna be ridiculous.
  11. The other thing we have to wait for is each player's major league career. Technically we traded Thatcher's good start in the majors for Linebrink's ugliness. I think it was a good risk. I'm really only worried about Garrison because he's so young. The old guy and the midget you can keep.
  12. I agree with all those but Kinsler. Rickie really is right up there.
  13. I found Kapler signing hilarious, and so far it's been Kyle Lohse hilarious. My only real problem with him doing so well is that they're gonna be forced to keep him after Cameron comes on board, and the last thing they need is another righthanded hitter on the bench. I also think Dillon is clearly a better offensive player and he's getting rusty with Kapler's caper. So while he's doing great now, and I'm loving it and chuckling deeply, he could paint the Crew into a corner after some dominoes fall.
  14. I'm really surprised by this thread. A bust? I don't get it? I've read the arguments and I'm lost. David Hume, the Scottish philosopher, said that people really go wrong when expectations become knowledge. So lets not talk about what he should be, lets talk about what he is. He not very good in the field, that's the major strike against him. Offensively he doesn't hit for a high average, but makes up for it with BBs, HBPs, stolen bases, and a ton of power for a second baseman. If he can get his OBP up to .400 from .375 he'll be an elite offensive second baseman. He's still got a year ot two years to improve. Rickie is just fine, sure you're gonna take Utley, but how many other second baseman are CLEARLY better? I can understand the argument that he needs to be moved, but then he doesn't seem to be even close to an elite outfielder.
  15. Can we please wait to archive this thread until we see who the Brewers pick up with the draft choices. If one of them turn out to be a Yovanni comparable (isn't that kinda where we drafted him, where the extra picks are) then the trade will well and truly be one-sided.
  16. The whole Patterson issue is a non-issue. Everyone, even Dusty Baker, knows that it's Jay Bruce's. They'll pull a Ryan Braun so they can keep him an extra year, but essentially he's just holding down the fort like Kapler and Gwynn. That he's the holding down the fort as well as he is is the surprise. But lets not kid ourselves and be insulting, for these 10 games or so he's got 4 homers. That has made him productive and important even though we know it won't hold.
  17. I think they made some statements we already know: 1) Baseball is still about pitching first. One Harang can kill a teamful of large lumber. IF, and it's a big IF, you've got two Harangs (Cueto) you're gonna be .500. IF, and it's probably an impossible IF, you've got three Harangs (Vol...) watch out. 2) And if you can't beat Josh Fogg at home, what hope do you have against Harang.
  18. Good idea, except the McClung half needs to be cancelled asap. It should've been the Turnbow/Vargas variety show. You know Turnbow as Cher to Vargas' Sonny.
  19. I really don't understand the problem here: neither Hart or Gross are centerfielders. We saw how a weak defense can undermine a team's long term plan, so why play both players out of position. We may love Gross' lefthanded bat on a team that's hurting for lefthanded bats, but there's a cost for that. That's why you call up Hurricane. If he was worse than either Hart or Gross do we really believe he'd be called up? Do you think the Brewers learned any thing from the Crabbe mistake? (That some of their minor leaguers may be better than they believe and deserve a chance on some level).
  20. I wonder...after Sheets pitches a jam how does he respond...more of the same or laying an egg. Hey Josh Fogg scares me, why wouldn't Nelson Figueroa not scare me!
  21. Thanks for the info Russ! I suppose if he hits over .500 the rest of the year it won't matter much though.
  22. I think he'll be just fine. I mean Corey came fairly close to catching it. It was almost like a looper. I don't mind him blowing the saves early in the season, he's already shown a willingness to adjust, so I think he'll adjust again. Remember every blown save lessens his cost for next year, and we'll need a closer next year as well. I like the Todd Jones comparison. if he can be that kind of unimpressive closer who's actually signable, well, I think that's what the Crew needs considering the huge contracts they're going to be doling out in the next two years.
  23. It can go the other way though. I was pretty consistent .500 to .550 softball hitter until I got glasses. My fielding regressed, I lost my power, dropped 150 points, the manager told me he'd cut me if I didn't take them off. Can you imagine the humiliation of being cut by an over 50, glorified pick up, any excuse for a beer, team?
  24. I think you think of cutting him if along with poor performance there's a corresponding drop in natural ability, losing mph off the fastball, totally flat curve ball, etc.
