  1. This is really a disappointment. The Brewer games really cut into my talk radio time. (Non-blue comment).
  2. I think in all sports it's important to "ride the vibe," which the Brewers seem to be doing quite nicely. My question is, are the Brewers the kind of team that will always or nearly always start fast given that they have a fairly set line up? Dunno.
  3. As a total outsider, and some one who is wrong on a consistent basis, I'd agree with James simply because there are more variables than can be accounted for in each situation. At best science offers a thumbnail sketch of the universe (a very important thumbnail sketch). I can't believe science and mathematics are done changing.
  4. Yost's best friend is Dusty Baker. Patterson defies all logic except speed.
  5. I think that the cubs are better, but our guys have much better upside. If enough of that upside kicks in the poor Cubbies are doomed.
  6. One thing that I would do to simplify the schedule would be to make the majority of series 5 games long. This would cut down on travel and expense, and would give each team a chance to trot out all 5 starters. I don't know if it's plausible, but there's some intuitive sense to it.
  7. I don't know guys, I get the feeling that it might come back and bite Ned tomorrow. If we're all agreed here that Riske is a better option than Turnbow with the game on the line maybe he should have used Turnbow or Seth for two innings. Keep your best pitchers for the closest games. A six run lead means that your second tier relievers should be out there in my book. I could be wrong though.
  8. You know I never try to root in division with the Crew, but my childhood hero was Roberto Clemente. I've always loved the Bucs. I know, I'm a loser.
  9. Yeah I hate him too. Did you see that look he gave after he figured out he could've caught the foul ball but didn't even move an inch as if it was just Soto's responsiblity? It was pathetic. But he's an force and if we had him instead of Hall I think the Crew would be a slam dunk for the division.
  10. For a guy so loyal this is great news. It's not often you hear about loyalty being rewarded. Fabulous.
  11. The thing is, I don't believe Alou. I think he could have caught it.
  12. This is important to mention because the vibe here (as I read it, so I could be wrong) is that we don't root for those who fit the numbers, for those who don't project. There's an "I told you so" syndrome that makes anyone who supports players who don't project defensive, and those who don't support that player offensive. There are so many intelligent people on this website, it's really astounding, but at times, it stops becoming a forum for ideas, and more of an "I'm right and you're wrong" lambast.
  13. The primary reason I like the Indians are the fans that visited Miller Park last year. I had a total blast with them. Good natured, talkative. Very classy fans.
  14. My whole philosophy in life is based on hating the Yankeees. Good and evil, life and death, disease and wholesomeness all revolves around the black hole currently spinning out of control in New York City. Everything they stand for is dark, puss-like, violent, and despicable. I will not have a friend who backs the Yankees; I will not date a woman who is even indifferent to the pinstripes. Everyone else is good or merely flawed as in the case of the Cubs. Everyone else is worth our support and the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations. Go Indians! Go People! Go Buffalo! Up with People! Yeah Catfish!
  15. I was thinking the same thing. I think he just pulled it outta his butt. But that made me think why don't we have a stat for a positive defensive play? I know it's hard to define, but just about everyone knows when they see one. I mean, there's got to be an important relationship between errors and outstanding plays, isn't there? In a way, the infield single is considered an almost outstanding play. A defender has to go from here to Minnesota on a play in the hole, but the runner just beats the throw that's in the dirt. Because the runner is so fast, and the ball in play is in such an extreme position relative to the fielder no official scorer would think twice about giving him an error. Am I making sense?
  16. I think both closers will be just fine. I thought if Woods wasn't so concerned about showing his team "he's got their backs" by plunking Rickie that he would've escaped giving up only 1 run or none at all.
  17. As a non-stat kinda guy I found it fascinating. I would've guessed he was more inconsistent. I just assumed there was more variation because pitchers intentionally "take something off" ocassionally. Although if they took too much off we'd call it a change-up.
  18. Watching the replay last night I was struck by Rock's comment, that the Cubs' 1st baseman saves his infielders 20 errors a season. Is that true do you think? That seems pretty significant. Or is it? How many runs would that save if true? In a convoluted-related observation: my favorite part of yesterday's game was when a slow roller was hit foul down the first base line. Fielder strolled over but couldn't bend down far enough to get the ball. You'd think a guy built so close to the ground would be able to touch it. My son and I took a double take and just chuckled. It really was funny.
  19. I'd say. I'd take Roberts and his salary and throw in a few million if the minor leaguers were legit major league starters down the road. Of course that would never happen--dang.
  20. I totally agree with this, and I think it points out that many aspects/skills/situations in baseball can't be quanitified by statistics. Those that can are immensely important tools of understanding, but there's another non-numbered universe as well.
  21. Hey Godspeed You! Thanks for pointing out the article. I'm gonna buy his new album because of his Braun love.
  22. Look, this discussion is getting pretty long in the tooth. I'm pro-Gwynn, and half the reason I want him to suceed is the sheer amount of crap he takes here. But having said that, he's no better than a fourth outfielder and probably only a fifth outfielder in reality. For him to be a starter he's got to get his OBP way up--I'm guessing in the .380-.390 range. He's got to start developing consistent doubles-power, and as good as he is in the outfield, eventually he's got to be Cameron good. He's also going to have to maximize his situational hitting (bunting, bunting for base hit, sac flies, moving runners, hit and run, etc.). That's an awful lot to ask of a player, and quite frankly I don't think he's got enough development time left to accomplish all that. On the other hand Gross is no better than a fourth outfielder either. He's got more power and a better OBP, but I think he's dead rotten in the field on a team that has to maximize its defense. He's streakier than Gwynn, and when he's en fuego you gotta ride him like they did last year for some time. He doesn't clog up the basepaths, but he doesn't add anything either, Gwynn's definitely better there. So, objectively I'd probably say that Gross is better, but only marginally. So, I'd rather keep Gross as my primary pinch hitter with the thought that he'll get less at bats, but more important at bats.
  23. The blown save doesn't really faze me at all, if and only if Gagne learned something. Fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, fastball, is not a pitching strategy. After he gave up the three runs he threw a first pitch curveball to the next batter and just made him look silly. Then he began mixing in the change up--bingo, out of the inning. I think he'll be fine. I'll say 37 saves and 7 blown. I think Riske will chip in 5. Someone else will get a 3 inning save, that totals 43 for the Crew this year.
  24. 37th game, Kendall. It hits off of Chris Duncan's glove and goes over the wall by mistake. he's that good out there.
  25. I just threaten to kill everyone if I don't get off. It always works at the post office.
