  1. The Brewers are the Brewers. They can probably afford 1 good player a year. If you sign Sheets, lets estimate 65 million for 4 years, then forget about any of the young guys eventually. There's no way to sign Fielder (and I wouldn't want to either, never liked Mo Vaughn that much). Hardy's defense doesn't overly excite me, though it's solid, and his offense I'm very leery of. Braun is just too young to tell yet (he's gotta prove he can hit without suckling on Prince's teat). Nobody else on the roster is a difference maker as I see it, although Yo might surprise. But for next year I think the rotation is Sheets, Gallardo, Parra (gotta have 1 lefty), Suppan, and Bush. Linebrink and Cordero walk (Melvin will find a closer, he's an expert, and besides closer money is usually a huge waste). Trade Vargas or Capppy (extra p for good luck) as I believe both still have excellent value (pitching always will). I'd love to see Jenks walk at this point.
  2. Bravo! That's my attitude as well. I have to remind myself of it ocassionally, but I think you're right. It's been a memorable season, and although I'm a Giant/Pirate fan but nobody's gonna replace the Crew.
  3. Here's my number one vent: we didn't see this coming 6 weeks ago? We blame it on in-season variation? How about blaming it on players who aren't up to the task, on management who are constantly making questionable decisions at best, etc. Playoff teams have in-season streaks, non-playoff teams play poorly at crucial times. These losses absolutely don't hurt because we've been prepared for them for over a month now. Judging humans and judging data are not the same thing.
  4. I can see both points here. To make a purely emotional decision is short-sighted, but to imply that an emotional decision is necessarily poor might be short sighted as well. Science has a lot to say recently about emotional intelligence and it's importance in shaping human behavior. Part of the reason for firing Yost better be emotional as well as rational--if not, it's half a decision. It's been my limited experience with atheletes that they are more emotional than rational, and when that emotion is providing positive stimuli then the results can be very good. The problem with the Crew is that the emotions now seem really negative. Sedar talked the other night on what a hard loss it was to take--I doubt the players are rationailizing their angst. Too many blown leads almost inevitably will take a toll, though I'm not privy to the clubhouse vibe and therefore could be wrong.
  5. If they screw up Y's arm, I believe it will deflate the whole organization. A kind of "here we go again," "back to the bad old days," kind of reaction. Worse, that could cause a chain reaction of overspending in the free agent market, or an unnatural pushing up of other pitching prospects. Chances are the Crew are going no where this year anyways--even if the make the playoffs. I'd rather be armed and loaded for the next two/three seasons than take unnecessary risks now.
  6. Actually this is one of the central questions of Brewerfan.net. What constitutes a "bad fan"? And is this website a place for "bad fans." As a newbie here, I gotta say everyday I find something interesting and thoughful and fun, but one time I begged to disagree with the inner sanctum of long time posters here, and I was hit with "bad fan" accusations, and "you make me sick" comments. Before I could respond the thread was locked up suspiciously (a dialogue wasn't even started). So where I'm sitting just asking the question out loud "does it make you a bad fan to wish or hope that Yost is fired" is both brave of you and necessary. In my book Yost has done what it takes to get fired, so the question isn't a "bad fan" question as much as it is a "concerned fan" question, and therefore it can't make you a "bad fan." And just to reiterate, what a great place this is. Other fan sites are usually filled with stupid, poop throwing, posters who just want to be obnoxious.
  7. Tony LaRussa is Satan and Mussolini and Montgomery Burns and Martha Stewart and Ron Jeremy without the physical attributes and Betty White all rolled in one. Pure evil--Go Cubs (never thought I'd say that).
  8. Gross wan't helping, and he isn't gonna help. Gabe Gross--difference maker--doesn't really ring true does it. The starters are absolutely killing the bullpen and you get rid of a reliever. Find another reliever then. Okay, Capuano--settled.
  9. Selig as an owner was first and foremost a liar--hence I hate him. I thought at one time that Selig was an above average commish, helping the smaller teams, generating interest, etc. But his smoke screen concerning the steroids issue has left him a mediocre leader in my opinion. I love Bonds as a player, and for awhile thought he was the best player ever to don a uniform except for Honus Wagner (it's the Bill James in me) but since his lack of judgement I've since dropped him to somewhere between 10 and 20. So I'm kind of the opposite of the love/hate relationship you describe, but I take your point.
  10. Oh yeah, and I believe some team in the NL Central will embarrass themselves enough to win a division, where no winner is deserving.
  11. I believe that's a picture of the greatest Bob Dylan album ever!
  12. I'll tell you what, next to the Yankees, the Cards are my most hated team, but this story is just too good. The public humiliation, the public crash and burn, I can't believe I would have had the wherewithal to survive psychologically. In a way this story is the antithesis of the Bonds saga. Bravo to Rick, no one can take away his story.
  13. Easiest post ever: clone Gallardo and Braun. Four of one, Eight of another. Take that Rockies!
  14. I just don't get the booing? It doesn't help; it's completely classless, and Wes isn't worth the effort.
  15. I love all the attention on the Cubs. It's our fixation with mediocrity in every facet of our society. Our complete satisfaction with the incompetent or the stupid or the trashy is right in keeping with the cultural impetus.
  16. For some, well, for me--this is definitely not fun. I've got a seriously bad heart, and fun for me is the Brewers taking the division by 20 games and sweeping every series, while averaging double digit runs per game with an ERA of about 2.00. I like watching other teams in close battles, let them beat the crap outta each other and drive their fans to suicide on an emotional rollercoaster. Give me a yawner from beginning to end. Yeah, I know I'm wrong.
  17. He's not doing as well as I hoped; I don't know about expected. I thought the platoon might really put a charge in him, and that possibly he'd be hitting in the .290 range with 20 homers and slightly better obp.
  18. I hope they hit 3 million. Mark and Doug and the players deserve it. This is not our daddy's organization anymore, and they should be rewarded financially.
  19. 1) Congrats to Bonds 2) Enjoy it for a couple of years, A-Rod will hit over 800 homer runs 3) I enjoyed the walks afterwards even more, I've never seen a hitter so many were afraid of 4) Orel was great last night, trying to bring some truth and prespective 5) I wish all the players would go back to doing handfuls of amphetamines 'cause people are cool with that
  20. I love the response. It's so antithetical to what we're used to. I betcha he listens to cool, cutting edge music, and eats chili-cheese coleslaw dogs too!
  21. Who else? The guy's been a total stud. Hebrew Hammer indeed! Can he keep it up? Not .350, but I'd be surprised if he hits below .310.
  22. The "playoff worthy" comment is interesting, and part of the problem. I think the Crew really is playoff ready, with very few holes actually. So there isn't too many ways to improve significantly. With Sheets hurt, with Cappy crappy, with Suppan inconsistent, etc. it's really up to the individual to make a difference. And they do have the players to make a difference, how many will step up? For instance. I've noted a real change in Prince. He's been struggling lately, but his at bats have become longer and longer as he searches for an answer. Sometimes he settles for the dink hit, but he keeps on "gaming" it. I've been impressed and he's shown real leadership on the field. And then there's the whole playing in pain thing (maybe I should be giving Estrada more props). I wish more players were taking his example.
  23. Thanks Stoops! Boy this shows just how tenuous things can be, how dangerous a demotion can be, it can cascade into the locker room, but if the report is accurate I think Melvin handled it well.
  24. I really agree with this last comment. As long as there are no personal attacks, people should feel free to express themselves anyway they want no matter how wrong or right, positive or negative, etc. This site is simply awesome, with tons of knowledgeable people, and it impresses me everyday. Diversity is where it's at. There's no doubt it's hard right now, but that's when we have to double check our tolerance, I'm generally a "doom and gloomer" and try to rationalize it as being "realistic." But I know tomorrow the Cubs could start impresonating themselves and implode, the Crew could get hot, and by Aug. 15 we could be 71/2 games up again.
  25. Has anyone heard? I'm asssuming he didn't go all Cappellan on us, but it's gotta be super tough on a starter and former 2nd pick.
