  1. Yes, total class, but if he no longer wants to play I'd love to have the Crew hire him as a coach.
  2. This team can't afford a guy like Hall. Their situational offense is just awful. Willits is exactly what the Crew need to be a more well rounded team, that can take a varied approach. Waiting for the power tap to come on doesn't always work. Now Hall is worth more than Willits because of said power, but that should net us a pitcher as well. A solid right-handed set-up guy who doesn't get injured and can log two innings at a time ocassionally. Does that describe anyone on the Angels? If not, then the deal probably isn't worth it.
  3. I'm not a Hall fan because he's really nothing more than a platoon player against lefties. I'd love Willits but would need an additional pitcher for Hall (can't ignore that power).
  4. We should sign Nock-a-homa isn't he Japanese?
  5. Thanks guys--that even makes sense to me!
  6. Can anyone tell me why WHIP is a misleading statistic. I've seen a few people disparage it. I just figured it had to be valuable because it measures the two things that pitchers most want to avoid.
  7. I'm in complete agreement here. Without a strong lefty in leftfield the Brewers are just too susceptible to good right handed pitching which is never in short supply. This maks the Brewers less competitive when going up against most #1 and #2 pitchers (I don't think it matters as much for #s 3,4,and 5). If they are serious about competing (and I think that remains yet to be seen) they're going to have to beat those share of pitchers. Gross simply isn't the answer. Not enough power, not enough defense.
  8. Good point brettac1--someone quick sign the other catchers. The Crew needs to go after the best available catcher in the minors who is blocked at the major league level.
  9. Doesn't it seem weird--the Mets throwing in the towel. Very good news I suppose. Oh yeah, he's Johnny Estrada Jr., I forgot.
  10. I really think it's best if the Brewers find a AAA or AA catcher who is organizationally blocked.
  11. I think the Brew is essentially stuck with Estrada. They've got to get the minor league catcher development program in gear--sooner rather than later. I tend to think he'll be a little better next year, but not significantly. I'd target Laird--the rest you can keep for various reasons--money, defensive ineffectiveness, etc. I'm in the anti-Torvit group--he's the same player just not so good as our Johnny boy.
  12. The Turnbow-Lidge comparison is clear enough and a just another reason why Melvin, intelligently, stayed away from pursuing Lidge.
  13. I love Davey, but as a human being and a first base coach. He's got no business being in the booth. Dang, I hate dumping on guys I love.
  14. I kinda like him, because he criticizes the home team when it does something stupid. His end of the year observations that the team needs major changes, and that there are no laurels to rest on, I thought was awesome.
  15. Man oh man that was fun trying to get my head around that. But I agree with Briggs, it guts one team in an area while stockpiling in another area. It's too perfect for the crew to work. Now if we whittled it down. Villy, Gamel, and Turnbow for Crawford I'd jump on that, but probably too one sided.
  16. Thanks SoCal--totally forgot that. Whew! You guys are always saving me from myself.
  17. I've always found this argument kinda funny. Of course RBIs mean something. They're an expression of the relationship between a particular player and the team around him. Describing this team dynamic is obviously important, more important (if winning's important) than an individual stat because it's a far more sophisticated stat, a more complex stat because it demands the need for even more stats to give it perspective. But alas, the new paradigm says they're not important, so they mustn't be then.
  18. How odd is this? It's like the Brewers are saying--go ahead take whoever you want--none of them are very good. Brad Nelson? Geez.
  19. I'd take Utley because I've got absolutely no guts to pick the guy who I think is gonna clean his clock.
  20. Look, the DH is for entertainment value--nothing more. Usually big fat guys who can't field isn't my idea of fun--for that I'll watch All-Star Wrestling. This gotta score runs to be entertaining mentailty just takes away from the balance of the game. Is a game better because the score is 7-6 instead of 4-3? Too many people answer yes to the latter. When there was no DH everyone had to bat, throw, and field--now no more. That's pretty sad. If you can DH pitchers why not DH all bad hitters eventually, so that there's a complete division of labour--pitchers only, fielders only, hitters only. Ridiculous, no logical sense at all. Can you even imagine how dumb it would be to deveolp a young kid as a DH. What an insult and what a disservice to a great game that teaches a wholistic athletic approach. One other slight point. Think about how a game changes when a pitcher can hit. Gallardo is a special weapon--really special and it enhances his value rightfully so.
  21. Man oh man, I'd take Money too. Who wants to work with his own executioneer?
  22. While I agree with what you say JIMH5 about it being "his" team, it is comforting to know that in our decisions we plant the seeds of our own destruction. Steinbrenner may indeed be a wiser man in some ways, but Torre has forgotten more baseball than George will ever know. If he continues to throw money at players he will insure his unhappiness, which quite frankly, delights me. His attitude of "I deserve to win because I've got the biggest payroll" flies in the face of logic and hard work and intelligence. Maybe in a bygone era could the rights of Kings and Tyrants be asserted, but the world has left the George Steinbrenners behind.
  23. Revenge is sweet isn't it. Brady gets a key hit to screw us, and then he totally blows in a one game playoff to knock out his own team. Well done Brady!
  24. I'd just like to say that this has not been a pennant race. This is two underserving teams shooting themselves in the foot on a daily basis--neither should feel very smug or even good about themselves. There have been no moments of excitement, no awe or happiness over stellar plays, there's been no real drama. Memorable moments? Yeah right. And most of all there's been no battle. Watching the Cubs and Brewers is like watching Don Knotts hitting himself. For myself, this will go down as the worst year in franchise history. For a small market team, that has never been competitive, they've thrown away a year they may not see again for another 30 years.
  25. At this point I'd rather have head than heart (no pun intended but if you wish by all means...) And my head tells me that the Crew will go on the road and screw up their chances, because, well, they really don't have the ability to act in another manner. And I've I said many times (my way of hitting myself repeatedly with a mallet) this is easily my worst season as a Brewer fan. Clearly they are the best team in the division, and clearly they enjoy shooting themselves in the foot. I'd rmuch rather have them mired down Pittsburgh way. It's a lot easier on the prilosec-ridden stomach.
