  2. Sounds Blanked In Road Trip Finale Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds were held to five hits by a trio of Oklahoma City pitchers during a 2-0 shutout loss to the RedHawks on Thursday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. With the defeat, Nashville finished its season-opening road trip with a 2-6 record, going 1-3 against both New Orleans and Oklahoma City. The Sounds' lone hits in the contest were singles off the bats of Erick Almonte, Eric Farris, Caleb Gindl, Paul Phillips, and Logan Schafer. Nashville put a runner into scoring position only three times on the night. It was a pitchers' duel for much of the evening as neither team scored until Oklahoma City finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sounds starter Josh Butler held the RedHawks to just two hits through the first six innings. In the seventh, Fernando Martinez led off with a single to left and Mike Hessman followed with a grounder to third that was mishandled by Erick Almonte for an error. With two on, left-hander Victor Garate took over on the hill. After a sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, pinch-hitter Justin Ruggiano delivered a two-run single to right to break the scoreless deadlock and give Oklahoma City a 2-0 advantage. Butler (0-2) took a hard-luck loss despite a quality start for the Sounds in his second outing of the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in his six-plus frames of action. RedHawks left-hander Dallas Keuchel (2-0) was even sharper than Butler, twirling seven scoreless frames while holding the Sounds to four singles and striking out five to pick up the victory. Mickey Storey tossed a perfect eighth before Jose Valdez worked around a one-out Schafer single in the ninth to close out the shutout and earn his first save of the year. The Sounds return to Greer Stadium tomorrow night to host their 2012 home opener, a 7:05 p.m. contest against the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA-Marlins). Right-hander Brian Baker (1-0,0.00) will toe the rubber for Nashville to face Z's right-hander Tom Koehler (0-1, 0.00). Mayor Karl Dean will throw out the season's ceremonial first pitch and a fireworks show will follow the on-field action.
  3. OKC (Astros) 2 Nashville 0 Box Score Caleb Gindl and Logan Schafer each had a hit. Eric Farris had a hit and a steal. The Brevard County and Nashville hitters combined for zero walks on the night. Taylor Green got the night off. Josh Butler pitched and finished with this line: 6 IP 5 H 2 R 2 ER 0 BB 2 K 5:5 GO:FO 1 Pickoff (76 pitches, 46 strikes). Victor Garate finished the game with a clean 2 innings. Eric Farris to 3rd. Paul Phillips out at 2nd, left fielder Fernando Martinez to shortstop Angel Sanchez to second baseman Diory Hernandez. Josh Butler strikes out on missed bunt. 4. I have been watching the WI game and Gagnon looks really good. He was painting corners with a nice two plane break fastball. He would start it down early in the count then pump it past hitters up in zone. He should find a ton of success in the MWL. I'm very interested in what TheCrew07 thinks.
  5. Dunedin (Blue Jays) 2 Brevard County 0 F/8 Box Score For the Manatees, it was the Jed Bradley show. He was perfect through 4, faced the minimum through 5, and did not give up a hit until the first hitter of the 6th. His ERA remains 0.00 on the season as the only run he gave up was unearned. He uncorked one wild pitch and had a 7:7 GO:FO ratio. His final line: 6 2/3 IP 3 H 1 R 0 ER 1 BB 4 K 1 WP Wild Thomas Keeling entered in the 7th and finished the (weather?) shortened 8 inning game. He gave up a home run to the 9 hitter catcher but did have 2 K in 1 1/3 innings. He is getting a lot of early run. Remember, Thomas signed an over slot deal after being drafted in the mid-rounds. The book on him is he has a great arm but he is wild. So far this year, his control has improved. Some of the Manatees got a hit. Most just struck out (12 K). The 2-5 hitters had 8 K tonight. Names have been withheld for their own protection. As I mentioned, the Blue Jays have a few studs on this team. The Blue Jays have more big arm pitchers than anyone else and that includes Sean Nolin, who pitched tonight. 5 2/3 3 H 0 ER 0 BB 11 K. You may recognize the name Marcus Knecht. The Brewers drafted him out of HS and made a strong push to sign him before he opted for JUCO. He improved his stock considerably and Jays took him in the 3rd round in 2010. Knecht hit 3rd tonight. The real big prospect on the Dunedin team is Jake Marisnick. He was a standard name to see on top-100 lists this past off season. Game Log Every single Bradley batter faced. 6. BC is playing the Blue Jays affiliate tonight. There are a couple of studs in the lineup to face Bradley.
  7. Sometimes, I finish writing a post and realize that I used the Greek alphabet by accident.
  8. I have to agree that Halton belongs in the top-30. Power and patience are what has held him back, but he is showing improvement, no doubt.
  9. Jimmy Nelson ‏ @Jimmy_J_Nelson @ChrisNeldner just keeping my direction towards the plate better. Trusting my stuff better. 10. This is totally unresearched, but the book on Gamel is to pitch him inside. The idea is to take advantage if the arm bar in his swing. Once he proves he can handle the inside stuff, he will get the 2008-10 Corey Hart treatment with tons of low and away off speed stuff. Until then, he will have to turn on the inside pitch often resulting in pulling the ball.
  11. Maldonado Provides Game-Winning Homer In Extras For Sounds' 7-6 Victory 04/11/2012 10:37 PM ET Nashville Sounds Oklahoma City, Okla. - Catcher Martin Maldonado launched a game-winning solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to propel the Nashville Sounds to a 7-6 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Wednesday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Nashville (2-5) offense erupted to establish a season-high 16 hits, as eleven different Sounds came away with at least one hit, including all position players and pitcher Mike McClendon. Second baseman Hainley Statia led the charge going 3-for-4 with a double, and three RBIs. First baseman Sean Halton extended his hitting streak to five games with a 3-for-4 performance while scoring two runs in the process. Outfielder Logan Schafer also added two hits with two runs scored and a stolen base. The Oklahoma City RedHawks quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as leadoff hitter J.B. Shuck tripled down the right field line and scored on an ensuing sacrifice fly from the rehabbing Jed Lowrie. Later in the frame after a single and throwing error on the Sounds, Scott Moore doubled home Fernando Martinez. The RedHawks tacked on another run in the third as Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a RBI double from first baseman Brett Wallace. The Sounds offense broke through in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs in the inning and runners on first and second thanks to two walks from RedHawks starter Aneury Rodriguez, third baseman Taylor Green singled to right field to score Schafer and advanced to scoring position on a throwing error. Statia then hit a weak grounder up the middle to second baseman Jimmy Paredes, who committed a throwing error to allow both runners to score and chase Rodriguez from the game. Oklahoma City retook a 4-3 lead in the following frame on reliever Dan Meadows. After consecutive one-out singles from Lowrie and Martinez, Moore blooped a base hit to left to score Lowrie. Nashville bounced back to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning thanks to three doubles off reliever Enerio Del Rosario. Schafer doubled to left field for his second hit in the game and scored on a one-out two-bagger from Halton that one-hopped the wall. Statia then smoked a two-out double to left field to plate Halton. The lead didn't last long as Oklahoma City scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 advantage. Moore doubled off reliever Amaury Rivas, moved to third on a single from Paredes, and came home on a throwing error as reliever Mike McClendon attempted a pickoff to first. After a walk to Collin DeLome, Paredes scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from former Sound Carlos Corporan. The Sounds rebounded to tie the game at 6-6 in the top on the ninth. Into the game as part of a double switch in the previous inning, Erick Almonte singled and moved to third on another base hit from Halton. Statia then brought home Almonte on a deep sacrifice fly to center field. Sounds starting pitcher Mike Fiers allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work. The right-hander threw 88 pitches (60 strikes) in a no-decision. Meadows gave up one run on three hits in two innings of work. Amaury Rivas was charged with a run in 1 1/3 innings. McClendon (1-0) worked a season-high 2 2/3 innings and came away with the blown save and victory. Oklahoma City used six pitchers on the evening. Rodriguez gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings for a no-decision. Juan Abreu (0-1) blew a save opportunity and was charged with the loss on two runs. The Sounds look for a series split with the RedHawks in Thursday's 7:05 pm CT finale. Josh Butler (0-1, 8.10) will toe the rubber for Nashville against Oklahoma City southpaw Dallas Kuechel (1-0, 0.00).
  12. Thank you for the kind words. I can relate to your experiences as well.
  13. I just want to throw in that I am very sorry for any misspelling or grammatical issues. I am an engineer, not a writer. I do my best to proofread and triple-check but I will make egregious errors from time-to-time. So don't get too fed up with me, I hope to improve with time.
  14. Looks about right. I would move up Nelson, Goforth, Arcia, Reed, and Gagnon. I would also add Ozuna and McFarland. After the draft and early season player progression, there is no way this system is bottom 10.
  15. Nashville 7 Oklahoma City (Astros) 6 F/10 Box Score In the battle of Brewers catcher cult classics, Martin Maldonado got the last laugh over former Brewer Carlos Corporan when he hit the game winning home run in the top of the 10th. 16. Manatees sweep Lakeland 04/11/2012 9:54 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees completed a three-game sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers with a 5-1 win at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland on Wednesday night. Both T.J. Mittelstaedt and Shawn Zarraga had two RBI each and starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson earned his first win as a Manatee. Nelson got off to a shaky start as he allowed a solo homer in the bottom of the first as Lakeland (3-3) took an early 1-0 lead. He would settle down and pitch five innings and allow just the one run on four hits. Nelson also tied his career high of eight strikeouts, which he accomplished three times last season with Class-A Wisconsin. Brevard County (5-1) put two on the board in the top of the second; thanks to a double to center field from Zarraga that scored Mike Walker and Scott Krieger to take a 2-1 lead. It would remain a 2-1 game until the eighth inning as Cody Hawn led the frame off with a double. He would score two batters later as Walker tripled to center to make it a 3-1 game, in favor of Brevard County. The Manatees added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run by Mittelstaedt, his second of the season. For the second straight game, Brevard County's bullpen did not allow a single run as Brian Garman (two innings), Alan Williams (one inning) and Greg Holle (one inning) combine to throw four shutout innings in relief of Nelson. Brevard County has won four games in a row and is tied atop the Florida State League's North division with the Dunedin Blue Jays. The Blue Jays will come to Viera on Thursday as the Manatees open up a three-game series with Dunedin and a six-game home stand overall. Lefty Jed Bradley (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will get his second start for the 'Tees. The 2011 first round pick struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings in his first start against Daytona. Dunedin will counter with a lefty of their own in Sean Nolin (1-0, 0.00). In Nolin's first start against Clearwater, he threw six scoreless innings. Box Score Jimmy J, from Niceville, FL, was very good tonight with his only major blemish being the home run he gave up to lead off the game. So intrigued, I went and looked at his game logs from 2011. He actually was not super dominant stats wise at the end of last year, but the scouting reports foretold a different story. Now, he is pitching as well as anyone in the system. He will turn 23 in June, so success in A+ should be expected. This Brevard team is loaded with relief prospects. Tonight it was Eric Marzec, Alan Williams and Greg Holle shutting down the opposing lineup in the late innings. Holle has better stuff then his 6.64 K/9 in 2011 indicate. It was a group effort for the bats tonight. Shawn Zarraga and T.J. Mittelstaedt were each on 3 times and Mike Walker tripled and doubled for the Manatees. Everyone else was on at least once except for poor Reggie Keen. Cody Hawn went 1-5 with 4 K. The Manatees were picked off 3 times and caught stealing once. Game Log Whoa. Lakeland Bottom of the 4th Avisail Garcia strikes out swinging. James Robbins strikes out swinging. James McCann strikes out swinging. Nelson's last inning. Struck out Castellanos to get out of it. Lakeland Bottom of the 5th Wade Gaynor strikes out swinging. Ryan Soares flies out to right fielder Franklin Romero Jr. Daniel Fields singles on a fly ball to center fielder Reggie Keen. Hernan Perez singles on a fly ball to left fielder Scott Krieger. Daniel Fields to 2nd. With Nick Castellanos batting, wild pitch by Jimmy Nelson, Daniel Fields to 3rd. With Nick Castellanos batting, Hernan Perez steals (1) 2nd base. Nick Castellanos strikes out swinging.

  18. I'm around for my usual. "Downhill Thunder" tonight!
  19. I guess it is a little disheartening to see all the big names on the lists, but no Brewers. Those lists are littered with big time players. A few promotions could change things. It seems like we have a lot of talented young guys, just not quite as talented as the young guys on other teams. Lopez and Arcia in Helena would open some eyes. Same with Michael Reed making it to Appleton this year or Hall getting bumped to Huntsville mid-season. Here's hoping.
  20. @AlfredAugust No #Brewers on the list. “@BaseballAmerica: As promised, here are the youngest players in each full-season league. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/04/the-youngest-players-in-each-full-season-league/” Is this a philosophical thing or a lack of talent thing?
  21. Hunter Morris played 71 games at WI in 2010 and accumulated 20 walks in 291 AB's. Hunter Morris played 130 games between BC and Huntsville in 2011 and accumulated 18 walks in 518 AB's. Everything else is there for this kid, he just needs to swing at strikes.
  22. Sounds' Woes Continue With 5-1 Loss To RedHawks 04/10/2012 10:55 PM ET Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds' early-season struggles continued on Tuesday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as they lost their second straight game to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, falling 5-1 in the second game of a four-game series. The win was the fifth in a row for Oklahoma City, which improved to 5-1 as the Sounds fell to 1-5 on the year. The Sounds manufactured the game's first run in unearned fashion in the top of the second inning against Oklahoma City starter Paul Clemens. Corey Patterson led off with a single to right and was sacrificed to second by Eric Farris, moving to third on the play on a throwing error. Martin Maldonado then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give Nashville a 1-0 lead. Nashville starter Wily Peralta was solid in the early going, allowing only a J.B. Shuck first-inning infield single through the first four frames before a bit of wildness caught up with him in the fifth. The right-hander issued back-to-back, one-out walks and, after a Shuck fielder's choice put runners on the corners, he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the RedHawks center fielder to move into scoring position. Rehabbing Houston Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie followed with a two-out, two-run single to center that put Oklahoma City in front, 2-1. Peralta (0-1) took a hard-luck loss after he allowed two runs on only two hits in his five frames of action, walking four batters and striking out six. The RedHawks extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh with a trio of two-out runs against the Sounds' bullpen. Donovan Hand opened the frame on the hill for Nashville and allowed a one-out Landon Powell single before being struck by a comebacker off the bat of Diory Hernandez and departed the contest after recording an out on the play. Vinnie Chulk replaced Hand and walked his first batter before surrendering back-to-back doubles to Justin Ruggiano and Fernando Martinez as Oklahoma City pulled ahead by four. Clemens (1-1) picked up his first career Triple-A victory after holding the Sounds to one unearned run on five hits over five innings of work. Oklahoma City pitchers stifled the Sounds' offense throughout the latter portion of the contest, retiring the final 15 batters in a row to secure the victory. Nashville's final hit and baserunner of the game was a Peralta single that led off the fifth inning. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Wednesday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-0, 1.50) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Aneury Rodriguez (1-0, 5.40). Box Score Wily Peralta was pretty good throwing 92 pitches, 51 for strikes. 5 IP 2 H 2 R 2 ER 4 BB 6 K 1 WP 6:2 GO:FO. He exploded last year because he cut down on the walks and firmed up his command in the strike zone. Another incremental step in the right direction could really solidify him as an impact type pitcher. Peralta also had a hit tonight. Logan Schafer (1B), Caleb Gindl (BB), Sean Halton (2B) and Taylor Green (1B) were all on base once. The Sounds used small ball for their only run. There are some black holes in the lineup for Nashville but this team should start scoring some runs soon. Game Log Small ball run Wily or won't he? He won't. Gameday
  23. BC rallies to win third straight 04/10/2012 9:48 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees rallied from a 3-0 deficit as they defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-3 on Tuesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Despite giving up three runs in the first three innings, 2011 first round pick Taylor Jungmann earned his second professional victory. The righty settled down and retired 11 of the last 13 batters he faced. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits, while striking out four and walking one. A three-run fourth tied the game for the 'Tees as T.J. Mittelstaedt led the inning off with a single then Cody Hawn hit a two-run homer, his second of the season, to cut the Lakeland lead to 3-2. Following Hawn's homer, Miguel Velazquez tripled and scored on Mike Walker single to tie the game at 3-3. Brevard County would score what would be the game-winning run in the top of the fifth. Adam Weisenburger would lead off the inning by reaching base on an error. Juan Sanchez would follow with a walk and then Nick Shaw singled to load the bases. That would chase Lakeland starter Shawn Teufel as the Flying Tigers brought Tyler Clark in from the bullpen. Clark would first face Mittlestaedt who hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Weisenburger and give Brevard County a 4-3 lead. Hawn would then draw a walk to load the bases, but the Manatees were unable to do anymore damage as Velazquez and Walker both struck out to end the inning. Thomas Keeling would come in for Jungmann with two outs in the seventh and was perfect in 1 1/3 innings of work with two strikeouts. Casey Medlen would shut the door in the ninth with a one-two-three innings and his third consecutive save. Brevard County will go for the sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Jimmy Nelson (0-0, 1.80 ERA) will get his second start of the season for the 'Tees. Lakeland will counter with Kevin Eichhorn (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Box Score Taylor Jungmann was shaky but solid for 6 2/3 innings in his second start. The 11:4 GO:FO and 4:1 K:BB are very good signs. He did give up a few too many hits and had a wild pitch. Wild Thomas Keeling and Casey Medlen finished with 2 1/3 perfect innings. The bats once again did just enough. Cody Hawn went deep, his second on the young season. He had 6 last year in WI. Nick Shaw, T.J. Mittelstaedt and Hawn all had a hit and a walk. Mike Walker had two hits. The intriguing Miguel Velazquez had a triple. The Manatees have been very aggressive on the base paths thus far. Game Log
