Pitching Prospect Velocity Reports (Updated for 2012)
Tedaldtada replied to Tedaldtada's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Jed Bradley Perfect Game (Pre-season 2012): "Now he’s a 6-4/225 man topping out in the mid 90s." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...solid fastball that ranges from 88-93 mph and occasionally touches 95 mph. His slider is his second-best pitch, while his changeup needs some fine tuning." Perfect Game (Pre-draft 2011): "Bradley has only refined his raw stuff since, and worked with a 91-94 mph fastball, 81-84 curve and low-80s changeup in most of his outings this spring." Nic Bucci Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...three-pitch mix that includes an 88-93 mph fastball, curveball and changeup." Drew Gagnon Baseball America (Pre-draft 2011): "...pitches heavily off a lively 90-93 mph fastball that has peaked at 94 this spring...At his best, he shows a 79-82 hammer curveball and an 82-85 slider, each with distinct shapes. His 82-85 changeup is also an average pitch." David Goforth Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...fastball ranges from 91-96 mph and he also recently added a cutter that has developed quickly." Baseball America (Pre-draft 2011): "...four-seamer still has plenty of giddy-up, at times reaching 97 mph even when he starts. He can throw strikes with the cutter, which sits 88-92 mph and gives him a power pitch with life." Taylor Jungmann Keith Law (Pre-season 2012): "He can sit 91-93 mph but go back for 94-95 whenever he wants it, and he pairs it with a hammer curveball at 75-78 with two-plane break, as well as a hard changeup he rarely used in college." Perfect Game (Pre-season 2012): "And they can’t say there is any concern about Jungmann’s stuff, as he pitches in the 92-94 mph range with very good life and a big breaking low 80s slider." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...a heavy fastball that sits in the low 90s and touches the mid 90s." Perfect Game (Pre-draft 2011): "Jungmann is a power pitcher with a fastball that sits at 93-95 mph, peaks at 98 and has good sinking action." Danny Keller Baseball America (Pre-draft 2011): "He has arm strength—he topped out at 93 this spring—and upside" Jorge Lopez Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...his 88-93 mph fastball...His best pitch could eventually be his curveball, which already flashes plus potential." Perfect Game (Pre-draft 2011): "Fastball to 91 mph, velo comes easy." Santo Manzanillo Perfect Game (Pre-season 2012): "...capable of hitting the upper 90s with some consistency while touching 100 mph." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...repertoire is enticing with a 95-100 mph fastball, hard slider and potentially-average changeup." Jimmy Nelson Rattler Radio by Chris Mehring blog (Pre-season 2012): "”Downhill Thunder” would be Nelson’s 94 with heavy, crazy sink." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "He has a low-to-mid-90s fastball that can touch 96-97 mph and a potentially-plus slider. His changeup is still in the ‘development’ stages." Wily Peralta Kevin Goldstein (Pre-season 2012): "...has two quality fastballs: a low-90s sinker and a hard four-seam version that can touch 96 mph...power slider is another pitch that can miss bats...greatly improved his control." Keith Law (Pre-season 2012): "He'll sit 94-97 mph as a starter with an above-average slider and average changeup, with slight sink on the fastball and solid-average control." Perfect Game (Pre-season 2012): "Peralta is a big and physical right hander in the Carlos Zambrano mold, capable of holding a heavy low-to-mid 90s fastball over the course of a game and mixing in a solid slider and changeup." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "The right-hander has a 90-95 mph fastball, which is his best pitch, as well as a slider and changeup." Cody Scarpetta Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...has two good pitches: an 89-94 mph fastball and a hard-breaking curveball." Tyler Thornburg Perfect Game (Pre-season 2012): "...he has nasty mid 90s stuff now...best secondary pitch is a very deceptive changeup and he also throws a big breaking curveball." Fangraphs (Post-season 2011): "...has a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a potentially-plus changeup. His curveball is inconsistent..." -
Back in our prospect heyday (aka the Pre-MarcumandGreinkeTrade Era), we had a thread to keep track of velocity reports, mainly the firsthand variety. Now, Twitter provides all sorts of information on velocities increasing the amount of reliable data we can analyze. My purpose for this thread is to revive the old thread and keep a running database of velocity reports. Post reports below. If the report is web-based (Twitter, blog, etc), please provide a link or quote. If firsthand, please indicate if your reading is via a "stadium gun" or a "scout gun". Any other details, such as FB:CH differential, fastball movement, etc would be great. I raided a ton of prospect lists to get us started, but there are a ton of holes to fill. I covered the top-10 guys and the higher draft picks from last year. I will post reports as they come in.

Is anyone else surprised that David Goforth is in the WI rotation and Tommy Toledo isn't?

Sounds Lose Series Opener In Oklahoma City 04/09/2012 10:52 PM ET Nashville Sounds OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds came up on the short end of a 4-2 defeat to the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series. Nashville (1-4) has been held to two runs or less in each of its contests this season. The Sounds grabbed an early 1-0 lead, plating a run in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally against Oklahoma City starter Henry Sosa. After the first two batters were retired, Caleb Gindl continued his early hot hitting by legging out a triple to center then scored the night's first run when Sean Halton followed with an RBI single to left. Right-hander Seth McClung got off to a solid start for Nashville. The 6-foot-8 hurler retired 12 of the first 13 RedHawks batters and did not allow a hit under the fifth inning, when Oklahoma City rallied to take the lead with a four-run frame. The RedHawks, who sent nine batters to the plate in the frame, put together three consecutive singles to start the home half of the fifth, the third of which by Jimmy Paredes plated Brett Wallace to even the score at 1-1. McClung followed with a walk to Landon Powell and the final pitch of the at-bat eluded catcher Martin Maldonado for a wild pitch that allowed Brad Snyder to race home to give Oklahoma City a 2-1 advantage. Jim Henderson took over on the Nashville hill and hit the first batter he faced before fanning consecutive batters for the first two outs of the frame. He wasn't able to escape the bases-loaded jam, however, as left fielder Fernando Martinez laced the first pitch he saw from the right-hander to center for a two-run single that extended the Oklahoma City lead to 4-1. McClung (0-1) took the loss for Nashville in his season debut after being charged with four runs on three hits in his four-plus innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out one. The Sounds got a run back in the top of the sixth with another two-run rally. Shortstop Edwin Maysonet ripped a two-out double to center off RedHawks reliever Adalberto Flores and scored on a triple off the bat of Corey Patterson, who went 2-for-4 in the contest after opening the season with 11 hitless at-bats. Nashville would get no closer, though, as Enerio Del Rosario and Juan Abreu closed out the contest with 2 2/3 scoreless frames. Abreu worked around a two-out Hanley Statia single in the ninth to nail down his second save of the year. Sergio Perez (1-0) earned the victory after working one scoreless inning of relief for Oklahoma City. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. match up on Tuesday night. Brewers top prospect Wily Peralta (0-0, 1.50) will make his second start of the year for the Sounds. The right-hander will be opposed by Oklahoma City right-hander Paul Clemens (0-1, 3.00). Box Score No visuals of Seth McClung giving Zach Braddock (24) a piggyback ride tonight. McClung's up and down evening is recapped well above. Jim Henderson relieved McClung. Henderson has been very solid for the Brewers the past few years. He could make the Reds bullpen now, no? Victor Garate pitched 2 innings after Henderson's 2. Together, Henderson and Garate combined for 4 IP 2 H 0 R 0 BB 9 K. Caleb Gindl tripled and Eric Farris was on twice with walks. Slow starter Logan Schafer had a hit. So did Sean Halton. Taylor Green went 0-4. Hainley Statia and Corey Patterson each had 2 hits. This OKC Astros lineup is full of fringy big leaguers and former top prospects. Brett Wallace hit 5th and started at 3B. He netted the Cardinals Matt Holliday in 2009. Former bonus baby Fernando Martinez hit 3rd. Game Log Henderson couldn't quite cleanup McClung's mess. Gameday

'Tees hold on to beat Lakeland, 5-4 04/09/2012 9:40 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees LAKELAND, Fla. - A two-out three-run home run by Mike Walker in the top of the ninth broke a 2-2 tie and Brevard County Manatees were able to hang on to beat the Lakeland Flying Tigers 5-4 on Monday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Brevard County was down 1-0 going into the seventh inning and had been held to just one hit up to that point. T.J. Mittelstaedt was able to get the 'Tees on the scoreboard in the inning with a solo homer to right to tie the game. The Manatees would take a 2-1 lead in the eighth as Reggie Keen's two-out double scored Walker. Walker led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shea Vucinich and then to third on a ground out by Shawn Zarraga. Lakeland tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out bloop single by Daniel Fields off of Alan Williams, which scored Wade Gaynor. In the top of the ninth, Nick Shaw led the inning off with a single and would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mittelstaedt. Cody Hawn was then intentionally walked by Bruce Rondon, so the Flying Tigers could get a righty-righty match-up with Scott Krieger. That moved paid off as Krieger struck out swinging. Rondon then had to face the left-handing hitting Walker and Walker proceeded to hit a three-run homer to right and Brevard County took a 5-2 lead. Casey Medlen then came in to close the game in the bottom of the ninth and gave up two runs and put the tying run on first base, but he was able to shut the door for his second straight save. Starting pitcher Austin Ross did not factor into the decision as he went five innings and allowed one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out four. The Manatees and Flying Tigers will be back in action in Lakeland on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. for the middle game of their three-game series. 2011 first round draft pick Taylor Jungmann (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will make his second professional start on Tuesday night. He went five innings and allowed one run in Brevard County's opening day win against the Daytona Cubs last Thursday night. For Lakeland, southpaw Shawn Teufel will take the mound. Last season, Teufel went 4-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 22 appearances for the Flying Tigers in 2011. He was 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in three appearances against the 'Tees last season. Box Score Austin Ross got the start and was very good. He is back in High-A to start so he needs to impress early to stay on the SP prospect map. A more loaded system may have already moved him permanently to the pen, but the Brewers still have hope for him. After Ross came three of the system's more legit relief prospects in RHP Eric Marzec (24), LHP Alan Williams (22) and RHP Casey Medlen (22). All three scuffled. In the end, Williams got the win and Medlen got the save. Go figure. The hitters were having trouble with Mark Sorensen for the first 6+ innings until T.J. Mittelstaedt (24) socked the game tying home run. Sorensen is not much of a prospect so I am not sure what the problem was. After he departed, the offense woke up scoring 4 times in the final 2 innings. 2011 WI Co-MVP Mike Walker (23) smacked a 2-on 2-out shot in the ninth. Shawn Zarraga (23) was on twice and is off to a hot start at the plate batting .455. Zarraga is listed at 6'0" 260 lbs on his MiLB.com page. Top 3B prospect Nick Castellanos homered off Medlen in the 9th. He should be joining Prince and Miggy in Detroit within a few years. At 20, he has got to be one of the youngest players in A+. Game Log Medlen's inning extended by a Nick Shaw error. Edit: Added recap
-
Gindl and Halton stay hot in the first for Nashville. BC finally scored, and tied the game, late. 2011 WI MVP TJ Mittelstaedt went yard.
-
TLB, you in tonight? If not, I will take Brevard County and Nashville.
-
The lower levels are packed full of interesting names as well. I wish they would move guys like Ross, McClung and even Miller to the pen in favor of being more aggressive with the younger guys.

Link Report for Easter Sunday 4/8
Tedaldtada replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Brian Baker? I'll take it. -
This is correct. I'm actually the guy that types the codes into the Gameday program while I watch the games from the press box at Fox Cities Stadium. Every pitch is recorded, so the pitch counts for Rattler games are accurate (home games at least). Brevard County doesn't seem to have anyone doing the Gameday for their games, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other Midwest League teams don't either. Cool! Any word if velocities will be available? Let me know if you take another job so I can apply for yours.

Sounds Lose Again To Zephyrs, 4-2 04/07/2012 9:46 PM ET Nashville Sounds METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds suffered their third straight loss on Saturday evening at Zephyr Field, falling 4-2 to New Orleans in the third game of a four-game series. Nashville has out-hit New Orleans in each of the three games this series but has failed to record a victory. The Sounds registered five hits to the Zephyrs' four in Saturday's contest. Third baseman Taylor Green (2-for-3) gave Nashville its first lead of the 2012 season in the top of the fourth inning when he belted a two-run homer to right off Zephyrs starter Wade LeBlanc. Sean Halton, who preceded Green with a line drive double to left that caromed off the third-base bag, also scored on the blast. The Sounds' advantage was short-lived, however, as New Orleans jumped in front with a big fly of its own in the home half of the frame. An erratic Josh Butler, who tallied six walks over his 3 1/3 innings of work in the contest, issued free passes to Bryan Petersen and Luke Montz sandwiched around a strikeout of Ben Lasater to put two runners on base with one out. Matt Dominguez followed by hammering a 1-2 offering over the left field wall for a go-ahead, three-run blast, the Zephyrs' first hit of the evening. The third baseman's first longball of the year chased Butler from the contest and gave New Orleans a 3-2 lead. The Sounds had runners on base in each of the next four innings but were unable to push across the tying score against New Orleans pitching. New Orleans tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against Vinnie Chulk. Scott Cousins led off and hit a liner to left-center that a diving Logan Schafer was unable to catch and the ball rolled to the wall, allowing the Z's right fielder to reach third on a triple. Petersen followed with a sac fly to center to extend the lead to 4-2. LeBlanc (1-0) picked up the win with a quality start effort for the Z's. The southpaw allowed two runs on five hits while fanning four in his seven frames. Beau Jones worked a scoreless eighth before Zephyrs closer Sandy Rosario wrapped up the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the year. Butler (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds. He allowed only one hit, the three-run homer, but walked six batters while striking out three in his 3 1/3 innings of action. The Sounds will attempt to avoid a season-opening sweep when the teams wrap up the four-game set with a 2:00 p.m. Easter matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Brian Baker will toe the rubber to make his Sounds debut in the contest. New Orleans will counter with right-hander Tom Koehler. Box Score Josh Butler had a very interesting line. 3 1/3 IP 1 H 3 R 3 ER 6 BB 3 K 1 HR. At this point, he is a fringe big league pitcher. Taylor Green's HR Audio Taylor did commit an error in the field. Gindl and Halton (also had a BB) were the only other Sounds starters with hits. 8 K and 2 BB for the Sounds batters on the day. Sorry, not much else here grabbing my attention. Game Log

Brevard County 1 Daytona (Cubs) 0 Manatees blank Cubs to take series 04/07/2012 10:37 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Two days after one Milwaukee 2011 first round pick made his debut in the form of Taylor Jungmann, it was the other first round pick's turn to toe the rubber and southpaw Jed Bradley didn't disappoint. He fanned seven as the Brevard County Manatees shutout the Daytona Cubs 1-0 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. Bradley's seven strikeouts came in 6 1/3 innings of work. He allowed just three hits and a walk, en route to earning a win in his first minor league start. A solo homer by Cody Hawn in the fourth inning off of Daytona's Hayden Simpson, a first round pick of the Cubs in 2010, was all the offense that Bradley and the rest of the 'Tees pitching staff needed. Hiram Burgos relieved Bradley and threw 1 2/3 perfect innings. Casey Medlen then came in and shut the door in the ninth with two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. Brevard County's pitching staff held Daytona to just six base runners as the Cubs didn't have a runner get past first base. The Manatees and the rest of the Florida State League will be off for Easter Sunday, but the 'Tees will be back in action on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. on the road against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Austin Ross will get his first start of the season for the Manatees. Box Score Space Coast Stadium is a pretty sweet name for a ballpark. Back in the 90's I saw an actual space shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. Cape Canaveral is just a few miles from the stadium. First, let me give Cody Hawn some pub for the game winning (in the 4th inning) home run. Now, on to Jedidiah Custer Bradley. I have him at 57 pitches total, 35 for strikes, using Battlekow's math. He was also pulled mid-inning after he gave up an one-out single. Seems somewhat strange although there was nothing in the recap or game log indicating an injury. Anyways, he dominated for 6 1/3 innings. Negatives first; he did hit a batter and he committed a fielding error. Positives; 7:3 GO:FO, a pick-off in the 4th, and 7:1 K:BB. Hiram Burgos has moved to a relief role and he did well going an 1 2/3 innings. Casey Medlen saved the 2 hour and 10 minute game with 2 K in his inning. Casey had a 11.4 K/9 and a 4.0 K:BB in 2011 across two levels. Game Log I was just going to post Jed's innings, but kudos to all three arms tonight for the shutout. There are some dominant innings mixed in here (see the top of the 1st and 5th).

New Orleans (Marlins) 2 Nashville 1 Box Score Free baseball! After watching Jamie Garcia duck and dodge Brewer bats today, I cannot help but think of Mike Fiers. Obviously, even the bubbliest Brewer fan ( ) could not hope for that kind of impact from Fiers, but it is not impossible. After getting touched up by major leaguers this spring, Fiers got back on track in his first start in AAA. 6 IP 3H 1R 1ER 1 BB 7 K. Our old (26) friend, Amaury Rivas, came in and pitched an inning of unscathed relief for the Sounds. Meadows and McClendon combined for another 3 scoreless. Jim Henderson struck out the side in the 11th but gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 12th via a crazy play involving 2007 1st round pick Matt Dominguez. Caleb Gindl (23) had three hits including a double. The rest of the Sounds combined for 3 hits. No other player on the field had more than 1 hit on the night with New Orleans only rapping out 5 in 12 innings. Taylor Green was walked intentionally. Respect. Sean Halton (24) was walked twice unintentionally. Progress. Game Log Along with his game ending error, Martin Maldonado was also charged with a passed ball. Check out that final play description. What the heck Martin?

Daytona 6, Brevard County 2 Box Score A tight game until late. This may be a recurring theme for the Manatees on offense. Shea Vucinich did have 2 hits and Cody Hawn knocked in both runs for BC. Mike Walker was 0-3 with 3 K's. The story (for prospect lovers) was Jimmy Nelson. He continues to build off of his second half in 2011 and the glowing ST reports I linked to above. 5 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 3 BB 6 K. Nelson struck out highly thought of Matt Szczur to lead the game off, then got him to ground back to the mound the next time. So beaten down by "Downward Thunder", Szczur meekly laid down a sac bunt the final time he faced Nelson. Connor Whalen was responsible for the 8th inning meltdown allowing a ill-timed 2-out 2-strike 3-run bomb to imposing 9 hitter Arismendy Alcantara. Whalen was decent last season in rookie ball out of the pen. Wild Thomas Keeling came in for Whalen and promptly retired Szczur on a GO. 10.9 K/9 for Keeling in 2011. Game Log I don't typically look at the game logs unless there is something that really sparks my interest. Here, we see some questionable Manatee D with a Zarraga throwing error in the 7th that lead to an unearned run. Here is the dagger:
-
Looks like I will be helping with some of the Link Reporting in the early going. I will post the game logs and box scores for the BC Manatees and the Nashville Sounds tonight. I am very interested to see what Jimmy Nelson, aka Downhill Thunder, does tonight. Narvdogg was impressed. Michael Fiers goes for the Sounds. Good luck to the young men. Edit: Get excited folks, we have pitchers! Jimmy Nelson is out now. 6 K's in 5 IP for Nelson. The rest of the line is also pretty.
-
Tons of interesting hitters on their way towards full season ball. Even someone like Kenny Allison is worth at least paying attention to. From the pictures, Ozuna and Reed both look the part.

Seeing as you (TheCrew07) are the most vocal critic of the Brewers' minor league coaches and program, it is not a surprise that you would excuse Lawrie's incredibly poor attitude when he was here. It better serves your purpose. We constantly heard scouting reports talking about how Lawrie seemed disinterested in defense during his time here. Everyone described him as perfectly capable but seemingly unwilling. Then, incredibly, as soon as he was traded to his hometown team, he started working on his fielding. My point is that Lawrie shouldn't even be considered a tweener. He is a guy perfectly capable of above average defense. When he first joined the Brewers, the kid could not throw. He had zero arm. I know he has worked hard to make it adequate now, but even that description is a little to rosy. Plus, I am pretty sure he was fighting off some sort of injury during that magical Hunstville 2008 season. I thought they were minimizing the risk of him aggravating it. They probably encouraged him not to be so abrasive towards his teammates and fans. The other problem, in Lawrie's eyes, was that they were not moving him along fast enough. I guess being 20 in AA, and the second youngest player in the league, is much to deliberate for Brett Lawrie. Of course there is. Long gone are organizations that 'wing it' or whatever you are implying.
