1st round pick at LT, big FA contract at LG, 3rd round pick at C, 2nd round pick at RG, big contract extension at RT. I think they need better backups, but I think they had bigger overall needs.

Bears drafting Logan Jones. Now the Packers need to go up and get Orange because he destroyed Iowa's interior OL. Orange's 34" arms vs Jones' 30" arms... LOL.

I wonder if the run on DTs last year is affecting the demand this year. I ran 12-15 mocks this week using the NFL Mock Draft Database Simulator, which runs off of the Consensus Big Board, which is what the writers at ACME Packing Company use. FWIW, Christen Miller was almost always available at #52. I think once he wasn't. Dani Dennis-Sutton was rarely available at #52; he frequently was picked by the Lions at #50. And that makes a lot of sense - I know they really want to have at least somewhat of a threat opposite Hutchinson, so I would not be surprised if the Lions go Edge at #50. Orange was always available at #52; they have him at #70 overall. Right now all four of McDonald, Miller, Hunter, and Orange are still available.

Every year Packers Wire does an "Unpacking Future Packers" series where they profile 100 draft prospects who they think have some fit with the Packers. They always count down to #1, with #1 being the player they think the Packers will take with their first pick. This morning they came out with #1. Hey, those names sound familiar! Dugger is interesting. I would not at all be surprised if they are targeting him in the 7th, but not as an ILB - with the intention to convert him to OLB. Been reading comments about him having natural pass rush abilities, and he did have 13 TFLs last year, but it makes me wonder why he didn't play Edge last year.

Almost all of the CBs who were available in the 2nd round were injured. I looked them up, and none of them played more than 12 games last year. They were still injured or got injured again. I think it was smart not to draft an injured CB, especially since they all had leg/lower body/back injuries. Once Nohl Williams got picked (two spots before their 3rd round pick), there was a big dropoff. If there is someone they should have picked who was available, healthy, and played more than 12 games last year, let me know. And their CBs didn't start looking bad until after Parsons and Wyatt went down. That's no coincidence.

Belton was a rookie who moved inside to guard after playing tackle in college. Come on. And Morgan absolutely threatened Walker at LT and showed it in the pre-season. He played RG because they thought he was better than Rhyan at RG in order to get their best 5 OL on the field, but then showed that he wasn't better at RG, and then after injuries to Jenkins and Tom they needed him at RT. If they didn't think he could play LT they wouldn't have let Walker walk. And Rutledge has never played tackle.

The problem - and what invites lawsuits against the NCAA - is a one-size-fits-all approach with only one way of doing things. One of the best ways to avoid lawsuits is to give people choices. For example: Scholarship are a 3-year contract. Player can't leave before 3 years without having to sit out a year (except if head coach leaves or they graduate). Contract is mutual - university can't revoke it either (except for misconduct - no "Creaning"). If a player wants the freedom to move in less than 3 years without sitting out, they can't take a scholarship and can only take school revenue sharing and whatever "NIL" they find for themselves (but not through the university). That way players have the freedom of choice to move if they want it, but provides incentive to stick around for multiple years. -
Rutledge - the Packers rarely draft players who played guard in college, and when they do, it's late. Last one was 6th round in 2020 (Stepaniak) and the last before that was 6th round in 2011 (Schlauderaff). I can't see them spending a day 2 pick on one unless they desperately needed one, and they don't - they pretty much have Banks and Belton locked up for the next two years, and it will take him a while to learn center (and won't get many snaps in practice there with Rhyan needing the reps). I just can't see a 2nd round pick on a guy who may not start for 3 years (and isn't a QB).

Usually it isn't who they bring in for top 30 visits that tells their draft intentions, it's usually how many players at each position. The top two positions based on number of players they brought in are: Interior DL: 5 Cornerback: 5 And then a whole bunch with 3 each. So, you can almost guarantee that they will be drafting at least one interior DL and one CB if not two. The fewest? OT - only one, and he is expected to be off the board by the time they pick at #52.

The Packers released three players last week, two of whom are somewhat interesting. LB Jamon Johnson, who the Packers gave the 2nd most guaranteed $ as a UDFA last year, was one. It was reported that he was released with a "non-football injury" designation. CB Tyron Herring was the other. While he was just a practice squad guy, this leaves only five true CBs on the roster. Bo Melton is listed as a CB, but he has yet to play a snap on defense. Last year they went into camp with 9 CBs, so they will likely bring in at least three between draft picks and UDFAs. Could also mean that they plan on investing a somewhat high pick at WR, and Melton is going to move to CB for good, leaving the WR room as Watson/Golden/Reed/Williams/draft pick/Moore. A somewhat high pick at WR would help keep Moore's offensive snap count % down, making it less likely that he cancels out the comp pick for Rasheed Walker.

I went round and round between Davis, Ephesians Prysock, and Demmings for the 4th round CB. With the Packers, it's not so much about height (they drafted Jaire Alexander at 5'10.5") as it is about density (Alexander was 192 lbs). They don't draft the really skinny CBs. Davis is 194, but at almost 6'4", he's on the skinny side. Demmings is the same weight, but at 6'1". That, and Davis' hamstring injury last year may tilt things a touch towards Demmings.

Bill Huber who covers the Packers for Sports Illustrated said that the Packers brought in a quarterback on a top 30 visit, but they asked Huber not to publish his name. It has to be someone they are really high on to ask him to keep it on the down-low. And it has to be someone who is realistically expected to go no later than round 5; I highly doubt he would be asked to keep quiet on a 6th/7th/UDFA type, as they named Behren Morton (#295 on the consensus board). A UDFA wouldn't make any sense as that QB is free to sign with anyone, and all another team has to do is offer a higher signing bonus and the Packers lose him. Has to be someone with a draftable grade.
