  1. I think it's more inconsistency. Not just with shooting, but being aggressive and trying to drive the lane or pick-and-roll to the rim with a big. I think a couple of weeks ago he said basically that he had been called inconsistent before.
  2. Yep- as weird as it sounds, with the lab stuff now, velocity IS teachable. It's the exact opposite of 10 years ago, when you drafted hard throwers and prayed that you could teach them control. In this case, I assume his control rating was highly desired by the team and there's an assumption that they may be able to add a few MPH, which seems a reasonable developmental plan. Plus, at 6'9" he probably has long arms and may have a release point closer to the plate than most pitchers (like Peralta) making his pitches seem 2-3mph faster than they clock.
  3. Recency bias. It's rampant in every post-draft poll. Their 2nd round pick from last year is in the top-10 but the 2nd round picks from 3-4 years ago are nowhere to be found. Same with their 5th round picks.
  4. Well played, sir. Like the pick.
  5. Yankees took Trey Sweeney at #20 - that's the guy I wanted. We'll see. Maybe Mikulski will still be there at #33.
  6. Not a fan of this pick. Benintendi is not a promising comp. Better be a heckuva CF.j I shouldn't be surprised - LHH college CF.
  7. I think it's from an analytical standpoint - college hitters are least likely to flame out at the lower levels of the minors. HS arms/bats are most risky. I also think they lean toward position players because of their pitching lab and the belief that they can develop pitching.
  8. If Cowser is available at #15 I think he’d be one of my favorite possibilities for the Brewers. My gut is that he’ll go before the Brewers first selection. Agreed. If he's available, I think he's the pick. My #2 is Trey Sweeney. Not the level of competition of others (similar to Cowser though), but love that .522 OBP and 46:24 BB-to-K ratio. 6'4" LHH, will likely slide over to 3B. Then the college arms - Bednar, Wicks, Mikulski, Gavin Williams, Bachman. I could see Hoglund if he's willing to take a well-under-slot deal; if he's willing to take $2.9M (value of #23 pick), that gives the Brewers almost $1M to play with in later draft picks. Mikulski is my sleeper pick here; being 22 and a 4th-year senior he might be able to be had under-slot. Five drafts since Stearns took the helm, five college players, four position players, three LHH. I don't see them deviating.
  9. The fun thing to look back on is that Lind was acquired for Marco Estrada, who was a waiver claim in 2010. In essence, a waiver claim resulted in an All-Star starting pitcher.
  10. Phoenix is 17-34 from 3. That this is even close is a miracle.
  11. As for the Houser-to-the-bullpen idea, his worst OPS-A this year is actually the first inning (.895). After that he settles down; his second worst OPS-A is the fifth inning, but every other inning is very good from an OPS-A standpoint. If a guy's worst inning is his first inning, that's not a guy I'd want to move to the pen.
  12. Two hits, no runs, three outs, 11 pitches. That's a Houser special right there.
  13. By which general managers and scouting directors? He was passed on by every team multiple times, which says that they didn't think he had "electric stuff".
  14. So, let me get this straight - Garcia left Marquette to go to a team that Marquette owned last year at their house. The only thing I can think of is that Garcia really loved Wojo... but even that wouldn't make sense to go to UNC.
  15. If they had more electric stuff back when they were in college, how come they lasted until the 4th round? The answer is that they didn't have more electric stuff - some good pro pitching coaches made some adjustments with them that made their stuff more electric. My post was in response to a comment that Wicks didn't have upside; my analogy was that Burnes and Bieber weren't thought to have much upside coming out of college, and that some adjustments and development brought out that upside. If Wicks didn't have some upside, he'd be talked about as a 4th round pick.
  16. Weren't people saying the same thing after game 2 of the Nets series?
  17. I sat through a rain delay at Citi Field once. The fun part was trying to catch a train back into the city at 1am... and I left before the game ended.
  18. Corbin Burnes, Shane Bieber, and many other college pitchers who had mediocre college numbers turned into great pitchers once they got a better pitching coach in pro ball who made a couple of adjustments. Sometimes college coaches go for immediate returns instead of long-term development.
  19. Has he been down for 20 days? I see him as playing only 13 games at AAA this year.
