  1. Kind of ironic that over the offseason these were the guys mentioned the most as getting cut (or wanting to get cut).
  2. Wasn't there a lot of hand-wringing around here last year about the Brewers not trading for Gausman at the deadline?
  3. At 16.8 K/9, I'd say that alone is pretty darn special. (His minor league HR/9 rate is 0.6, and his H/9 is 5.1. I don't know if that's "special", but I'd say that's pretty darned good.)
  4. Yes and yes.
  5. Just stop with this. Braun has been ~.800 OPS player each of the last two years. Is he worth his contract? Probably not, but he's not even remotely hamstringing the organization. Albert Pujols is hamstringing an organization. Robinson Cano is hamstringing an organization. Johnny Cueto is hamstringing an organization. Joey Votto is hamstringing an organization. Braun is not only more productive than any of those players, he's also being paid less, and can be off the books after next season if needed. The Brewers can always structure a contract to backload it to after Braun is off the books.
  6. Ray Black with an impressive debut. Given the Brewers bullpen turmoil, I would think it isn't long before he's in Milwaukee's pen. Luke Barker continues his impressive season. From the little I've seen of him, I believe he is not a fireballer but has a plus to plus-plus changeup, kind of a poor man's Trevor Hoffman. Correct me if I'm wrong (and please post a scouting report). Would like to see the Brewers give him a look in September, but Devin Williams might very well be the priority for that roster spot though. September can't come soon enough for the Brewers bullpen. You might see all of the 40-man pitchers up - Black, Faria, Jackson, Supak, Burnes, Williams/Barker. They'll need to bullpen the 5th starters spot.
  7. I hope that Cephus can get back into a decent school. Even if you're found not guilty, these things can follow you and they can find reasons not to let you in to pacify the court of public opinion.
  8. There's reason to be optimistic. Looking at the last few drafts - 2016, 2017, and 2018 all have been able to get talent beyond the first couple of rounds. 2016 - Burnes, Brown, Feliciano, P. Henry, Webb. Some of these guys had down years, but the talent is still there. Burnes was drafted only three years ago and he was expected to be a starter in the majors this year. 2017 - B. Francis, A. Bettinger, M. Lazar, D. File. All had breakout seasons this year, and are likely undervalued because they weren't top picks and weren't on the prospect radar before this year. Bettinger is 2nd in the Southern League in K's, Francis 7th. Lazar's K/9 is 3rd among starters in the Midwest League. Their numbers aren't that much different from the Braves highly regarded pitching prospects. 2018 - Ashby, Jarvis, Rasmussen, Andrews, Matulovich. All have either impressed this year or last year. Plus, Garabitos has transitioned to pitching well this year and Brady Schanuel is striking out 17/9 this year - if he can harness some control he can be an elite relief prospect. Pretty much all pitchers. The top picks were all bats, many of them somewhat high risk/high reward and young for their leagues.
  9. Pretty sure you could also say that having him available to start on Tuesday - and throw 5 innings of 3 hit, one run ball - gave them as good of a chance to win that game as anyone.
  10. Which would be, what, a handful of innings? Arcia gets hurt and one of Saladino/Perez is packing his bags and heading to the airport immediately.
  11. I think this one's fairly easy. Taking out Grisham because he's been called up, it's Brown, Sanchez, and Ray. Webb's performance and injury make him a fairly low risk to expose. Erceg's performance makes him a fairly low risk to expose. QTC's injury makes him a low risk to expose. The one I wonder about is Bickford, and it's not because he's a former first round pick - it's because in a fairly small sample he's struck out 15.3/9 this year. Not sure if he found something or if he's finally healthy, but someone might take a flyer on that in their bullpen. Man, looking back on Bickford's 2016 reminds me of why I was so excited about the trade, but throwing 120 IP a year after only throwing 22 IP as a 20-year-old... why?

  13. Maybe try going to work and being in meetings all day so you can't check your phone. Made for a nice low-stress day for me.
  14. The Brewers don't like to throw their rookies to the wolves. Won't be surprised at all if he isn't starting tonight. Willing to bet that they give him a day to acclimate to the clubhouse and team, watch the game from the bench to get a feel for the majors, and pinch hit him in a somewhat lower pressure situation. Don't freak out if that happens.
  15. I've had my eye on Ray Black for years. Career minor league K/9 of 16.8. Think about that for a minute. (For reference, Hader was 10.1; granted, he was starting most of the time but 15.1 in 2012 as an 18-year-old in relief). I don't think this is the year to go for it. Save your bullets for the offseason and reload with a couple of free agents on short-term deals, and give Peralta and Burnes more time to develop. Dubon on his own wasn't going to bring back anything special. Throw some spaghetti on the wall and see if you can turn into the 2006 Cardinals.
  16. Based on my experience in Dallas, they're real easy to spot. The women all have mini pom-poms and the men all look like Eli Manning, complete with flop haircuts (or conservative parts).
  17. x1000 Unless it's that $%?#&@! horn at the Vikings games.
  18. Probably. Can't be stretched out for much more than that. He had a start not that long ago around 90 didn’t he? Maybe longer than I thought... Something like that, but Counsell had no business bringing him out for the 7th inning or whatever. He should not have gone more than 70-75 pitches that game. Cost him 3 runs after being gassed.
  19. Puig getting in a fight immediately after being traded is the most Yasiel Puig thing ever. David Murphy, color analyst for the Texas Rangers: "Maybe they're happy they're getting rid of the quirky pitcher who threw the ball over the centerfield fence, but now they're getting the quirky right fielder who has been involved in plenty of brawls."
  20. Wow. Allard, a former top-100 prospect who was in the majors at age 20, for a guy who at age 33 does not have a long track record. FWIW, I think Allard was overrated and profiles at best as a back-end starter, but still that's a lot to give up for Martin IMO.
  21. This is true, and given the addition of the bonus pool in 2012 and comp picks for unsigned picks in 2010, the players picked prior to those years may not have been the players picked had those rules been in place at that time. What I will acknowledge is that the #5 overall pick in one year may not be the same as the #5 overall pick in another year. In the last 20 years the Brewers have had top 5 picks four times, and three of those years had arguably three of the lowest levels of talent in a draft during that time with 2003 (Weeks #2 overall) being perhaps the worst draft class of the last 20 years. Take Verlander out of the 2004 class (Rogers #5 overall) and it's as bad as 2003.
  22. You sure you're not already there? You're spelling like it.
  23. The "needle-movers" are pretty much all under control beyond this season, thus those teams don't have to trade them - if they can't get the right value at the deadline, they can wait until the off-season to trade them. There is a little bit of injury/performance risk, and less control means less value, but in the off-season more teams feel they can contend, there are more potential buyers, and a team in contention this year might not need that guy now because they have a guy who is an impending free agent but will need the guy next season. The trade deadline isn't the only time that players can be traded.
