  1. Want to talk about blunders? The Cubs traded Donaldson for 36 starts from Rich Harden (who walked 1.5 years later as a free agent), and they traded Chris Archer for 2.5 years of Matt Garza on teams that went 70-92, 61-101, and 66-96.
  2. Brewers first inning ERA now sits at 5.96. Maybe we should revisit that "opener" idea...
  3. B-R.com is horribly off on their service time count, as they say he had 4.107 years as of 1/19. I assume they are as horribly off on Chase Anderson's service time too, as it has Anderson with 4.146 as of 1/19. I assume either Peralta back to the rotation, or Burnes goes down and Wilkerson comes up.
  4. According to BF.net's 40-man roster, both Nelson and Anderson have an option left. If so, I think it's time to send one down (preferably Nelson) and give Wilkerson a 4-5 game look in the rotation. He isn't going to set the world on fire, but he has nothing left to prove in AAA and can't be worse than what Nelson and Anderson have been doing lately. Will be nice to see what Wilkerson can do with an extended look and not having to pitch as soon as he gets to the ballpark after traveling all day.
  5. Herro spurns Wisconsin, goes to Kentucky, and gets drafted #13 overall and will be making a couple million dollars a year living in Miami. I think his decisions have worked out for him.
  6. For those who don't remember, the Brewers starters didn't exactly light the world on fire when DJ came to Milwaukee. They struggled the first couple of months, and some (including myself) questioned if DJ was the right person for the job. The Brewers' starters had a first half ERA of 4.77 in 2016. The Brewers have a new pitching coach and a new hitting coach. There may be an adjustment period to their coaching. Those who are in the "R-E-L-A-X" camp aren't saying they're satisfied with just making the playoffs. They're saying that there is a lot of baseball left in the season, and what you see now may not be what you see in August and September.
  7. Brook Lopez has already made $120M in his NBA career. I foresee him going where he thinks he has the best chance to win a ring, and not who offers him the most money. While he made more 3's last year than ever (not that many more than 16-17), his overall scoring per game dropped from the year before and is still a lot less than two years ago.
  8. Given Diekman's high career BB rate, and his $5.7M 2020 mutual option with $500K buyout, the Royals are unlikely to get more than this for him. Since his move to the bullpen, Diplan has a .564 OPS-A as a reliever (albeit with an unsustainable BABIP). They might be able to get Diekman for Diplan straight-up. I'd see if the Royals would take Aguilar plus a proverbial lottery pick. Aguilar is having a down year, but is cheap and under control until 2023. Straight up for Diekman he saves the Royals about $1.4M this year with three more years of control to find his magic again.
  9. With two outs and RISP this season, Saladino has a 1.405 OPS. Not sure about park factors as he has been significantly better at home than on the road (and is in the PCL), but he's been almost equally productive against RHP as LHP. I don't know who goes down other than Shaw, and if he goes down I'd rather see Hiura up.
  10. Cardinals and Cubs combined for one run on eight hits tonight. Wonder what their fans were saying.
  11. Cubs fans were saying that tonight too. One run on six hits to the White Sox and Ivan Nova, whose ERA dropped to 6.01 this game.
  12. He picked the right game... 17-1 in the 5th. Saladino, Spangenberg, and Nottingham must have been aware that he was there.
  13. Strop entered in the top of the 9th and immediately gave up a single and a 2-run bomb to Jimenez. Cubs have one run on six hits through eight. Cubs aren't immune to looking like garbage. Edit: Cubs just yanked Strop instead of facing the imposing threat of... Ryan Cordell. Yes, that Ryan Cordell.
  14. How the hell do you give up two triples to Stephen Vogt?
  15. Barnes keeps getting chances because his FIP this year is 3.88 (xFIP is 4.02) and for his career is 3.59 with 9.4 K/9. His BABIP this year is .333 (unluckily high) and his LOB% is 53.4% (well below his career LOB% of 69%). He's not great - he's an average major league reliever - but he is nowhere near as bad as some here think he is.
  16. Taylor Floyd, RHP, Texas Tech in the 10th. Exclusively out of the bullpen this year, but good numbers - 45 IP, 39 H, 1 HR, 19 BB... aaaand 72 K. Looks like a really good value for the 10th round.
  17. Kahle had a .511 OBP last year. 59 BB to 26 K; 25% BB rate. That's pretty impressive.
  18. And walked in his other three plate appearances. Whatever he's eating for breakfast and lunch, can he share some of that with Corey Ray?
  19. Many are advocating signing Dallas Keuchel, who averaged 90.2mph on his 4-seam fastball last year (89.5 and 89.3 the two years prior), as a free agent, but think that a college pitcher whose fastball range is 86-92 and was 2nd in all of college baseball in strikeouts and hits/9 is a boring/low-ceiling pick. I don't think anyone will be upset if he turns into the next Dallas Keuchel.
  20. The hotel I'm staying at has the NBA, NFL, NHL, and Golf networks/channels, but no MLB Network.
  21. He's had all of 26.2 IP to prove himself, and of those, 18.1 have been on the day he was called up, likely involving a very early flight, not much sleep, and in one case, lost luggage that required him to borrow someone else's shoes while he made a spot start. (Despite that, his career numbers are a FIP of 4.62, xFIP of 4.28, with 8.4 K/9 and 3.57 K/BB.) I do not understand how anyone can say his major league performance has been anything but a small sample, and with extenuating circumstances behind most of it.
  22. We've been conditioned to believe that will happen. But what we've been shown is that extended funks by proven hitters just don't happen. Look at Braun the last two years - how much hand-wringing was there about his starts? He's washed up, looks lost at the plate, just cut bait, etc., and then what do we get - a second half OPS of .879 last year, including a .963 OPS in Sept/Oct, and a 1.014 OPS this year in May. We're still in small sample territory. It's only the first week of June. And if Moose is out for an extended period (the Brewers do like to take their time before putting a guy on the IL) and goes on the IL they'll need another LH bat and also can call Hiura back up immediately.
