  1. Really surprised to not see Matulovich in A-ball. Hopefully he isn't injured... or retired.
  2. My friend got PTBNL. Unfortunately I live in Illinois and can't get them. But they have Cubs ones, and I'm thinking about getting one that says, "YELCH1". Or get University of Illinois plates that say "BUCKY1". The inspiration came from a guy I saw driving around with Notre Dame plates that say, "USC1". I thought that was a clever way to take a jab at a rival.

  4. Fielder was the easy one. For the other it was between Gorman Thomas and Oglivie, and given that LH batters get IBBs more often than RHB I went with Oglivie.
  5. On that note, if there is a tax attorney on this board, please PM me about setting up a LLC and transferring my rental property and personal home to the LLC so I can deduct the full amount of real estate taxes.
  6. Dumb question, but do you escrow your taxes with your housing payment each month, and if so, does your mortgage company pay your taxes for you? If so, they will have a record of it. Log on to their website and look at your escrow history or the escrow analysis they do annually. I would think that if you don't escrow them and pay them directly, that would be a really big check that would be easy to find in your bank records. The changes in the tax code this year limit the total you can deduct in state income and real estate taxes to $10,000. IIRC, you live in CA, so you are probably paying a lot income taxes and the combination of the two will be more than $10,000. Worst case scenario, put what you paid last year and the two will probably add up to over $10,000 and nobody at the IRS will care.
  7. I believe he was complementing you...
  8. A good decision to have it now. He'll miss the entire season, but should be back before the end of next season and contribute to next season's playoff team.
  9. This is a behavioral heuristic called "anchoring", which is that a person's first exposure to something becomes their "measuring stick" for how they evaluate everything else that is similar/in that category. Their first exposure was cheaper than you, thus that becomes their measuring stick. It's kind of the opposite of if your first exposure to a car is the beat up old Oldsmobuick that your parents/grandparents have, and then you go off to college and a friend from suburban Chicago pulls up in an 8-year old BMW 3-series. The BMW isn't anything special for a BMW, but compared the the Oldsmobuicks you grew up in, it's pretty awesome.
  10. The head coaches at UW are state employees, and by law all WI state jobs must be publicly posted for a specified period of time before they can fill them. There is a process that must be followed, and that process would not have allowed them to fill the position with basically anyone but Gard during the season, which is why Bo retired in-season - he wanted to force UW's hand in hiring Gard. UW was caught in a position where if they wanted to look at anyone other than Gard they had to wait until the season was over, which put the recruits in limbo. With UW coming off of consecutive Final Fours, there was thought that if they waited they might be able to get one of the best ones available. No coach is going to leave his team mid-season, so they chose to wait. Even if Barry wanted to give the job to Gard they had to wait until the public posting period was over and follow state hiring protocol, which would have taken them through a significant chunk of the season. They still had a very good team (Sweet 16, should have been Elite 8 if not for a complete meltdown the last two minutes against ND). If they posted the job in-season, they would have been forced to interview other candidates as well and it would have been a distraction to the team. So it was either put the recruits in limbo or be a distraction to the team, and they put the team first.
  11. Most big-time programs have one guy every year who transfers out because he's buried in the depth chart. Four in three years isn't that big of a deal, and the players they lost are not anything special.
  12. Fixed. Edley's on 12th Ave South for BBQ, and for the after dinner drink you must get a Bushwhacker (kind of a frozen slushy thing with your choice of syrups lining the mason jar). The whole 12th Ave South area is a really cool area to walk around. One of those places you wouldn't have been caught dead in 20 years ago, but now is one of the hottest neighborhoods in the city. Lots of restaurants, shops, wall murals, and a big park. The 21-year-old will love it because there are tons of 18-24 year olds walking around. Mafioaoza's Pizza has a great beer selection and double bubble happy hour. Flipside is kind of a hip retro diner thing, and you might catch some young up and comer singers working there as waitstaff. Taylor Swift has been spotted at Epice (an uppity Lebanese restaurant). There are old service stations that have been converted into shops/hair salons/etc. There's a Marine Layer clothing store opening up if that floats your boat. Also, there is a giant antique warehouse (not the 12th Ave South neighborhood) that I believe is owned by the owners of American Pickers. Given the prices of the things in there, I'm pretty sure it has to be owned by them.
  13. I have no idea how that push in the back on Duke's missed free throw wasn't called. Oh yeah, because they're Duke.
  14. "We came to the conclusion that Morant was almost virtually unguardable," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said after the game. "So we had to make sure that we defended the other guys that fed off of him. We worked hard and made him earn all his baskets, and I thought we did a really good job defending the other guys, and I thought that really made the difference in the game." So, pretty much the opposite game plan that Marquette had where they doubled Morant every time he touched the ball which left his teammates wide open.
  15. This Badgers game is one of the worst officiated games I have seen in a long time. Should be at least six more fouls on Oregon, including a technical for the crap that Amin pulled in the first half. Then this charge on Happ... complete garbage, worse than the blocking call on Davison in the first half.
  16. I'd be surprised if the annual salaries didn't decrease the last 2-4 years of the deal. I'd bet higher than AAV through age 33, then below AAV after 36.
  17. CMIII also gets to go home to SoCal.
  18. Prior pitching coaches were enamored with the cutter and had him change his slider to a cutter. It worked for Miley but not as much for Barnes. I've been saying ever since he made the change that there isn't enough of a mph differential between his fastball and cutter. Definitely needs to go back to 4-seamer + slider.
  19. Oregon has a somewhat small team, largest guy is listed at 6'9", 225, and of the five guys they have who are listed at 6'9"/6'10" two are barely 200 lbs. For reference, Happ is listed as 6'10", 237, and Reuvers is listed as 6'11", 240. That being said, in the tourney it always comes down to 3-point shooting. Oregon is 189th in 3-point shooting, Wisconsin is 73rd.
  20. They finished third in the conference for a reason. Powell is a star - he's a three inch taller version of Markus Howard, and I believe he was 2nd in conference POY to Howard. I really hope Powell goes pro after this year. Mamu and Nz offer a decent inside presence, and they have length at guard with McKnight and Cale. The ejection of Theo John, and non-ejection of Powell and non-technical on the guard who got up in Anim's face causing Anim to get a 2nd technical, was horse manure. The elbow that Powell threw at Anim in the first half was far more egregious than anything John did. But Powell gets a flagrant one on the elbow and a technical in the scuffle, but doesn't get ejected. The bright side is it gives Howard a little more rest for his wrist.
  21. If there is no Happ or other inside post presence to worry about and draw defenders, the others are going to have a much harder time getting open shots. They have a hard enough time getting open shots now as is.
  22. No, we... .... did the Safety Dance with them
  23. I'd be much more in favor of a pitch minimum than a batter minimum.
  24. I'm not sure when the latest changes to the draft compensation took place, but wasn't 2018 the last year of his rookie contract? I'd think they'd get more in trade if he's under contract for five years than if he has one year left and no guarantee he'll resign with the team he's traded to. If they have to eat the bonus as dead cap, that makes him all the more valuable to another team in trade because they get him for a lower cap value and thus increases the return. I think it makes sense.
