  1. Nice AA debut, as bolded above, for RHP Jacob Barnes. Am I misunderstanding what you are saying? Barnes has started 21 games for Huntsville this season.
  2. Which HS kids are you referring to? Beede didn't sign and has concerns about his control. Guerrieri just recently began pitching again after TJ surgery, and he wasn't missing a lot of bats before he got hurt (6.9 K/9 in low-A) - he's gotten by on good control and not giving up hits but how will that translate if he recovers and gets to AA and starts facing the much higher quality of hitters like Jungmann has been facing? Ross hasn't been anything spectacular - he's not missing a lot of bats either (7.2 K/9 for his minor league career). Stephenson lost his control once he got to AA - 84 BB in 146 IP. Are you referring to hitters such as Nimmo and Swihart? Those two had good years in AA this year, I might give you those, but the other HS draftees aren't wowing anyone yet either. Jungmann has been facing much tougher hitters than the HS kids have so far. Let's see how good those HS pitchers look at AA. Hasn't worked out well for Stephenson so far.
  3. Do you really think that the Brewers, in the heat of a pennant race, will wait for their AAA season to end before calling up reinforcements? Honestly... AAA playoffs versus the major league team's playoffs? Call up some guys from AA to replace them or find some AAAA-quality street free agents. They may stagger them a bit - call up Schafer, Falu, one of Hermida/Clark, Wooten, and Figaro on the 1st and then Rogers, Weisenburger, the other of Hermida/Clark, Pena and Blazek once AAA ends, but I guarantee you that there will be some callups on 9/1. Zach Hirsch doing his best Mike Fiers impersonation.
  4. Tyson Ross took a few years to develop. He didn't strike out a lot of guys early on in his career (minor league K/9 of 7.8), and on the surface profiled as a "back-of-the-rotation innings-eater". Wasn't until his 5th full pro season that he started putting up great numbers. Often in the minors guys look worse than they really are because they are working on a 3rd/4th pitch, which usually results in more walks and hits. The question is whether they develop that pitch, as it can take 3-5 years or more.
  5. Keep in mind, Rosenthal has been far from reliable - he has a WHIP > 1.4. K-Rod's WHIP is <1.0. Rosenthal has one fewer loss than Estrada.
  6. I have a hard time pinning this on K-Rod, considering how the Brewers batters have been waving at pitches well out of the strike zone (again) and the Brewers fielders have been playing awful defense. Should have been at least a 2-run lead, and the HR meaningless.
  7. Ross was an All-Star for a reason. The Brewers aren't the only team he's been fooling with that slider. He had a 1.10 ERA in July (.500 OPS-A) and a 2.78 ERA in August. He was a 2nd round draft pick in 2008 out of UC-Berkeley. Only 7.8 K/9 in his minor league career. Don't mock drafting college pitchers - sometimes they turn out to be really good. A's traded him for Andrew Werner and Andy Parrino. Oops.
  8. The good: Matt Clark is on fire. I'd be really surprised if he's not put on the 40-man and called up in September. The bad: Wisconsin manages only 2 runs on 13 hits and 2 walks. Remember when Jose Pena was a prospect? The hopefully not ugly: Bradley only threw 54 pitches today and exited after 4 innings. His last outing wasn't good either, so hopefully he's just tired and not injured.
  9. But quite the performance from Mr. Wang. Only 74 pitches to get through 6.1, with 54 of them strikes.
  10. It is their M.O. to trade a ML player for ML players/ML-ready players (Carlos Lee, Richie Sexson). Could easily see them flipping Gallardo for a ML LH 1B. The downgrade from Gallardo to Fiers would be far less than the upgrade from Overbay to... just about any starting caliber 1B. They've never traded starting pitching before because they've never had excess starting pitching before and multiple upper-level SP prospects.
  11. Not any more - .975 and .996. Dude's been on a tear. While Nashville is in the PCL, it isn't the launching pads that Colorado Springs, Reno, Las Vegas, and other Western Division teams are. Plenty of humidity in Nashville to deaden the balls; I think it's a fairly neutral park. I'd argue the best PH bat they could bring up, certainly from the LH side. On a side note, Logan Schafer has a .815 OPS and .370 OBP since being sent down. Irregular playing time, along with being asked to bunt frequently, made his stats make him appear worse than he really is.
  12. Gorzelanny hasn't pitched since 8/10... does RRR even remember he is on the active roster?
  13. 18 in a row and 2 hits against the team that is 3rd in the AL in runs, 2nd in hits, and 2nd in HRs (and 6th fewest Ks).
  14. Put me in the camp of move one of Gallardo or Lohse. They will have plenty of SP depth next year - the other of Gallardo/Lohse, Peralta, Garza, Nelson, Fiers, with Smith, Thornburg, and Pena as additional options with Jungmann, Bradley, and Cravy at AAA for depth. Even Blazek has looked decent and serviceable since being moved into a starting role. Gallardo or Lohse could bring back a much-needed LH 1B, an upper-level 3B prospect, or even an upgrade at SS (see: Rangers, Arizona, maybe Cubs) to allow Segura to find his stroke (and some plate discipline) at AAA next year. The future rotation plan is kind of set. Next year if they lose one of Gallardo/Lohse they have Fiers stepping in; then the following year they lose Lohse for sure with whomever of Jungmann/Bradley/Cravy is ready to step in with Wagner, Lopez, T. Williams, H. Johnson waiting in the wings. If Nelson and Fiers are your #4 and #5, you've got a pretty nice starting rotation.
  15. My question would be what is the technicalities for a guy that is injured being put on the 60 day DL by the team to open up a 40 man roster spot, and getting them off the MLB pay and service time clock? Does the team just takes them off the 60 day DL after the season is over and puts them back on the regular 40 man roster, regardless of where their health progress is at? Do they have to pass a physical? In other words if they put a player on the 60 man DL and it takes longer to get healthy than surmised, could it cost the Brewers MLB pay and service time next season? In which case it may not be wise to put those pitchers on the 60 day DL. All players are taken off of all DLs - 15 and 60 - at the end of the season. The 40-man roster has to be set by a certain date prior to the Rule 5 draft and it can only be 40 players regardless of whether they are injured or not. A player would have to be kept on the 40-man roster over the winter and then put on the DL at the end of spring training next year in order to accrue ML service time/pay next year.
  16. With a two run lead in the 9th you go after the hitter and don't walk him; take the 70% chance that if he hits the ball he will make an out. Kemp hit a pitch that was up at or above the letters; it was at the edge of the strike zone if not slightly above it, not a bad pitch at all. I have no problems giving up a solo HR in the 9th when up by 2+ runs. Gallardo had the meat of the order coming up in the 8th approaching 100 pitches. If any of the first two batters get on base Gallardo is facing Gonzalez with a runner on up by only two - Gonzalez this year has a .882 OPS vs. RHP and a .515 OPS vs. LHP - you HAVE to have a lefty up and ready in case a runner gets on. RRR made the right decision to have a lefty up. What if one of the first two batters got on base and then Gonzalez hit a 2-run HR off of Gallardo? Would that have been a smart decision?
  17. yes. but any of those players would first have to be activated from the minor league disabled list, recalled by the brewers, and then placed on the 60-day disabled list. any of those players would then be earning major league service time and major league pay. Thank you. And five weeks of major league pay at league minimum salary isn't worth a pennant chase?
  18. Dave Bush career major league K/9: 6.0 Dave Bush career minor league K/9: 7.3 Shawn Marcum career major league K/9: 7.3 Shawn Marcum career minor league K/9: 8.9 Marcum is somewhat comparable, but Bush is a laughable comparison. Yes those are nice but when Fiers is off with his command he gives up home runs like Estrada does. In 2012, among 79 NL pitchers with at least 100 IP, Fiers HR/9 that year of 0.8 was tied for 19th best. And was second in K/9 to Strasburg.
  19. Also no walks and seven groundouts for Jed Bradley, fantastic performance. Seven of his last eight starts have ranged from decent to stellar. Box says nine groundouts. Not only that, of the six hits he gave up: - two were ground balls into the outfield - one was a ground ball to 2B - one was a "bunt ground ball" to 1B - one was a "pop-up single" to 1B (?) Only one hit was a line drive to the OF, that a line drive single. Guy has just been killing worms, and once he gets better defense and positioning behind him he could be a very good pitcher. His demise as a prospect has been greatly exaggerated.
  20. First player to have 14 Ks in 6 IP or less since 1969. [sarcasm]Gotta throw 95 to be a good starting pitcher though...[/sarcasm] Yeah, it's the Cubs, but I didn't see Shelby Miller do this to the Cubs two weeks ago. Gerrit Cole only got 10 Ks in 6 IP.
  21. His HBO comedy special back in the mid-late 80's is one of the funniest comedy shows of all time. Just left me in tears the first time I saw it. RIP Robin. Oh captain, my captain!
  22. I'm absolutely shocked that a total of six players from the 31st, 30th, and 29th rounds of that draft have already made the majors.
  23. If the Brewers lose one extra inning game because they run out of pinch-hitters or relief pitchers it will be inexcusable. Bring up anyone and everyone they can. Doesn't matter if they play or not, it's an insurance policy against a 19-inning game, of which there have been two this weekend. Forgot about Prince - good chance he gets added to the 40-man, especially if Bianchi is out for the year. Surprised they dropped Falu... unless there is a waiver claim trade in the works.
