  1. Funny thing is that he's not that much shorter than half of the guys on the team, particularly that Richie Sohm guy who was on the team for several years. That dude had to go about 5'4".
  2. With Salome's lost time this year he makes a lot of sense in AFL, as does Jeffress. Brantley, Aguilar, Salome, Jeffress in AFL? Dark horse for Hawaii - Casey Baron. He'll get some looks as a future LOOGY, so they may want to see him pitch more. Other dark horse for Hawaii - Andy Bouchie. Because of LuCroy he hasn't gotten a lot of plate appearances. A little early to give up on the former 7th round pick. Cody might be another pitcher who they might want to see throw some more innings due to lost time.
  3. As for the comment about no prospects at 2B, 1) Weeks is still only 25 and B) Taylor Green could easily slide over to 2B. In fact, the more I think about it, an infield of Hardy (3B), Escobar (SS), Green (2B) and Fielder/Gamel (1B) would be pretty sweet and very well L/R balanced, especially when you factor in Braun and Hart in the OF. Hardy has a strong enough hose to play 3B; I'm not so sure that Green projects to be as good defensively at 3B as Hardy. Why not spend the first 2 years of that with him behind the dish, to see if he takes to it? 'Zactly. BJ Surhoff was a SS in college and learned to play C in the minors; I think Lawrie can do it. You can always move out from C, a la Craig Biggio and others.
  4. Is there anyone that doesn't agree that Prince Fielder should recieve some kind of reprimand including a minimum of 1 game suspension? Yes - me. Very similar to the fight involving Steve Smith earlier this week. Suspending Smith hurts the team more than it hurts him, just as suspending Prince hurts the team more than it hurts Fielder. The Brewers can't, and shouldn't, be without Prince. If a teammate provokes or starts a fight with a teammate, hit them in the wallet. That will teach them a lesson a lot quicker than sitting them, and it won't hurt the team (and sitting that person only reminds everyone of what happened). Not playing them hurts the team. Besides, if you stick Fielder in the wallet steep enough, he might need the money enough to sign sign that contract extension. The part that bothers me is how seriously Manny's pitching well-being was put into jeopardy in a selfish & irresponsible show of violence. That shove to the bench was out of nowhere as far as Manny looked to know, and it just as easily could have ended with an ankle or leg injury to boot. Exactly what I was thinking when I came to this thread. Not just his physical well-being, but his psychological well-being also. Also, ditto on being proud of how JJ, Ray-Ray, and Braun handled themselves. Especially Braun - being the first to go up to Manny and pat him on the shoulder and tell him it's OK, and for his comments after the game. The more I see of Braun, the more I like him. He is exactly what this organization needs, in many ways.
  5. He can't handle not being the guy. I know there are no numbers to prove this, but it's just a gut feeling. Kind of like the statement that Prince can't handle not being the guy with Braun around. No stats to prove it (someone did post Fielder's ABs after a Braun HR, and it was very interesting), but a lot of observations...
  6. No comments about the OPS he put up in Helena? .479 OBP that year. That's unbelievable. Too bad he got his girlfriend pregnant, which distracted him the first month in Beloit, and then severely distracted him when he was in Stockton (causing the dropoff and the retirement). 225lbs is pretty generous too. I'd say more like 240.
  7. The universe clearly hates you, LouisEly, and I object. Finally, someone else sees the world I live in.
  8. Tough to get overly excited about college hitters in Helena. Does Komatsu have a chance? You bet. But until he does it at Brevard or Huntsville, I'm not booking his ticket to Milwauke just yet. Agreed. Helena is generally considered a step below college-level pitching. Many a college player has raked at Helena and not gotten to or did anything at AA. I'll get excited when he's raking at Brevard or higher. Until then... well, look at the numbers that one of my friends posted in Helena in 1997. That got him nowhere (Beloit the next year, then Stockton the year after and retired a month and a half into the season), despite walking 84 times and striking out 48 times his first two seasons. Plate discipline is nice, but it isn't always the best predictor. It's still kind of sick that Jack spends almost no draft picks on hitters and still finds a couple of guys that can just rake. Not exactly true. I'm sure you were referring to just this year, but their 1st pick was a hitter (Lawrie), as was one of their 2nd rounders (Dykstra) and their 3rd rounder (Schafer). Over his tenure however, Jack has only drafted four pitchers in the first two rounds prior to this year - Jones, Rogers, Gallardo, and Jeffress. Komatsu is doing well, but I wouldn't say that he is "raking".
  9. Let's just pretend for the time being that Rob Wooten was the sandwich pick and Frederickson was the 13th round pick. The silver lining to the BC game was that two of the three hits were by Lucroy and Green. Pretty much every other position player there I have given up on (although I will give Brewer two more years, but my hopes for him are slim). No matter who the PTBNL is, we will still have two of Brantley, Lucroy, and Green. Scarpetta starting to look like he was worth the wait. It's time for Cody to make his way to Huntsville.
  10. Marriage? Can't believe I'm the first to say Tina Fey. However, I would like to make it illegal for Brooke Hogan to have sex with anyone other than me.
  11. You sit there and get pies tossed at you for 4 goddamned days straight, and you can't say anything. It was torture. I feel your pain. I had to sit through four days with a drop-dead gorgeous colleague who is a big Cubs fan, and not only did I have to deal with the torture of finding out she is married again (the second time in about two years) I have to sit and listen to her ask what the score of the game was last night. Anytime some smartass asks you what the score was just say, "Brewers - 19, Cubs - 08". (Or I say, "Hey, at least the Brewers have been to the World Series... in my 59-year-old father's lifetime.")
  12. I don't think he has been 100% all year until he rested. No one is very good at 70-80%. I was just going to say the same thing. I think he came back too quickly from the DL and didn't rehab enough, but the rest of the All-Star break coupled with CC's complete games bookending the All-Star break I think gave Gagne the rest he needed. Since the All-Star game he has been painting the corners and not afraid to throw his curveball early in the count and his fastball for strike three. I'm *this* close to being in favor of him being the 8th inning guy; let me see two or three more good outings and then I'll declare him back. As for Mota, he wasn't as bad the other day as people think. One of the hits was a blooper down the first base line that was one foot from being foul, and IIRC three of the hits were ground balls that went through holes. Not great either, but I can't wait for Sept. 1st to see Stetter, Dillard, and DiFelice vault ahead of him on the depth chart. Maybe Mota can have a mysterious blister pop up that can keep him on the DL until 9/1.
  13. Mark DiFelice could conceivingly be a big part of the 2009 Milwaukee staff Agreed. He rebounded from a horrible start to post deceptively good numbers. His 0.95 WHIP surprised the heck out of me; unfortunately when he does get hit he gets hit hard (4 HRs in 13 IP), especially by leftys. He could be particularly effective against RH dominant teams, like the Cubs and Cardinals are now. I just hope he doesn't get frustrated from getting yanked around because he deserved to be in the majors more than some guys on the team, a la Steve Bray. I've been particularly impressed with what Brock Kjeldgaard has been able to do, especially after not doing much hitting the last two years and not having played against top competition (Indian Hills CC) like some D-1 college players. He appears to be getting the hang of it after a rough start. Hopefully the plate discipline will improve with more experience, but I'm more excited about him than any other position player in Helena. (Edit - he has surprisingly good splits too; smallish sample, but .917 OPS vs righties and 1.003 vs leftys.)
  14. Considering Lucroy's OPS in Brevard is now .879 and Taylor Green's is .820 I think that it would be a good thing if Lucroy is eliminated. Still hoping it ends up being Cain instead of Brantley or Green. Whether or not Cleveland's scouts are still in Brevard will give us pretty good insight as to whom it will end up being.
  15. I'm not a fan of standing and watching, because you never know - a big gust of wind, a bird, a stupid flag pole in the middle of centerfield whose base is 430 feet from home plate... But I am absolutely digging it. This franchise has been down for 26 years. 'Bout time we had some swagger. I think they should show all of those HRs in the intro at Miller Park before they introduce the lineups in a video montage, with POD's "Here comes the BOOM" as the soundtrack. And there's a difference between watching it and mouthing off about it. and the ball Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox knocked clear over a left-field light tower at Fenway Park. Corey Hart did the same thing. And what about Branyan's blast that may have bounced off the concession stand in the Dew Deck?
  16. Welch really likes 7-inning double-headers. Gillespie with another 2-bagger. Curious as to what the record for doubles is in a season.
  17. Is it me, or are the X-Games promos getting dumber every year?
  18. Back to Gibbons, I'm not sure what he gives you that Laynce Nix doesn't already have. (LH, power, low OBP, good defender, can play CF). I guess Gibbons has "proven" more at the major league level, but post PEDs he hasn't really shown more than Nix. Nix is quietly having a very good year in Nashville (yes, I realize he has been there a few years), and his willingness to stay with the Brewers in the offseason and not gripe about his role should be rewarded provided they don't acquire anyone better, and I'm not sure at this point that Gibbons is any better.
  19. Farris with a nine game hitting streak, in which four of those games he had three hits. His early season struggles apparently are behind him. Needs to get his OBP up, but only two Ks on one walk in those nine games. He may be forcing things to try to make up for his early season struggles, but for now he is putting the bat on the ball and finding holes. Schafer seems to be adjusting to A-ball just fine. Strong final three innings from Dillard and Pena. Looking forward to those two, Stetter, and DiFelice coming up on September 1st (or sooner).
  20. To have a car headed straight toward you on the freeway is quite the surreal experience. I had that happen once. About 10 years ago just north of Beaver Dam when they were expanding 151 from Beaver Dam to Waupun. The concrete had been laid for the northbound side and it was almost completed but it hadn't opened yet, so traffic was still one lane each way on what is now the southbound side. It was after dark, and the dude probably thought the northbound side was open and was driving in the left hand lane of two lanes going south, but apparently wasn't aware of the YELLOW dashed line between the two lanes (or was colorblind). I soon realized I had a vehicle heading directly at me in the same lane. Laid on the horn, ditched it, and ducked. Fortunately because of the construction the inner shoulder was gravel and hard-packed dirt. So I just pulled back on the highway and continued on. It really is surreal when it is night-time and you suddenly realize the lights facing you are in the same lane.
  21. The Manatees roster gets filled by the transfer of Nashville OF Mel Stocker to Brevard County. (Seems like a chance for Stocker to get some AB's, and relieve the Nashville outfield glut.) Is there a chance that might have come with a wink and a nudge about being added to the 40-man on Sept. 1st and called up for pinch running duties again?
  22. GB, I'm not so sure that your post should be in blue...
  23. So I was at a big, rather notorious party a weekend ago and I heard the DJ spinning a tune that either "mashed up" Toto's "Africa" with a rap/hip hop song, or it was a rap/hip-hop song that just sampled the chorus of "Africa". Wondering if anyone here might be familiar with that track. Thanks!
  24. With West Virginia in first place I think there's a good chance that Luetge and Wooten will be there in the next couple of weeks to help make a run at the playoffs. Anyone know if Cleveland's scouts have migrated more to Huntsville (suggesting Brantley or Cain) or if they are staying in Brevard (suggesting Lucroy or Green)?
  25. Matt Herges for PTBNL which becomes Errecart. Herges' home/road and day/night splits are very equal; oddly more effective against leftys than righties in his three year splits. Herges has put up some good numbers in Coors. And That - shouldn't your post be in blue (at least the Crabbe part)? I would love Bell, but I think it will take more than those three. If WAS will take Nelson, Braddock, and Pena for Rausch I'd do that in a heartbeat.
