  1. Someone a little while back said Escobar's range is phenomenal. That the knock on JJ's defense, that he lacks range. Escobar is right around his career fielding percentage and with that percentage people have been wowed by his play, so I guess the errors do not concern me too much
  2. Branyan may just be a 4A player but against righties he is a little above that and Bill Hall against righties isn't that great either. I think we can expect Branyan to give us more against righties that what Hall is giving us. It would actually be hard to give us less.
  3. Brevard County's rotation is going to fun going forth. Braddock, Jeffress, Hand, Periard, Butler, and now Cody in a little bit. One guy is going to have to get bumped up to AA and I assume it will be Hand. I could see Hammond being bumped to AAA.
  4. San Diego missed the playoffs by a game last year. Actually, they tied Colorado and lost the one game playoff. He's there because they were supposed to be better than this. Since, they are 13 games under .500, I think he might be up to switching teams. Now again there might be other teams who have better shots at the playoffs who might look to get him too, but I would think we have a shot
  5. I feel like lefties can get by with average stuff though. No they probably won't end up being studs, but we have seen guys like Cappy and Doug Davis hit 85-89 on the gun but have good secondary stuff. Again I dont know where Narron sits on the gun but I know he induces a lot of grounders and has a great change. He is part of a wave of pitching prospects who might only project as 4/5 typ guys if that. But if a couple of them can become 4/5 guys I think we are in good shape. We will have Yo at the top and Parra is coming around. We need some back end depth so when a guy like Cappy gets hurt, and Bush and Villy struggle we have someone who can step right in. Hopefully Narron, Welch and Miller can become those type of guys or better
  6. Why wouldn't he want to come to Milwaukee? We will be contenders at least for the wild card while San Diego will be far out of it. The brother connection might help as well. There will probably be other teams trying to get him so if that was your reason I guess he could just hold out for the team he really wants to go to and that makes sense
  7. Chris Lofton is the bball player from Tennessee
  8. Bill Hall before th pitcher tonight? Has this been done yet this year? Not sure if that is the best spot for him given his willingness to swing at almost anything but he and hardy both seem to need a change of some sort so maybe this will help.
  9. We could still be sellers at the deadline if we dont pick it back up. The reality is Gwynn does not seem to have a place on this team so we are not paying much to buy.
  10. A grounder to me is still better than a K because a it can find a hole for a hit, it can be misplayed or it can be in the hole where they can only get one out. Put it this way a grounder is better with a runner at 3rd, runners at 2nd and 3rd, and some times with runners at the corners. A K does absolutely no good. For all the talk about JJ being a threat to ground into a double play he has grounded into one more than Hall all year. From what I can gather they have had about the same amount of opportunities as well.
  11. I was thinking about this as well once I saw Peavy was going to the DL. San Diego's season is done and Maddux is a perfect fit for us. Gwynn doesn't really have a future with our club with guys like LaPorta, Brantley and Gillespie coming up. This would be a great trade and we need to do it soon before we fall too far back.
  12. LaRoche was hurt but has actually played 20 minor league games since coming back. I think since DeWitt is hitting they are letting LaRoche stay at AAA. I guess I would go for the one that is easier to trade for since DeWitt is a lefty which fits our needs and LaRoche is a great OBP guy which fits our needs.
  13. While I agree to some extent that K's are not as important as other stats I think they are important when a guy does not walk or hit for average. A guy like Adam Dunn who strikes out a lot is still valuable because he walks a ton and slugs well. A guy like Braun who strikes out somewhat frequently is still valuable because he maintains a nice average and slug a lot. However a guy like Hall is striking out a ton and ranked 13th and 11th in the NL respectively in OBP and Slugging, while being 2nd in K's. That shows lack of plate discipline. If you are going to strike out a lot without walking much pitchers are going to quit pitching you strikes. And unless you are a good bad ball hitter like Soriano, Braun, or Vlad you are in trouble. That is why I am okay with Weeks striking out because he walks a lot. He leads all 2B in walks which is a plus for a leadoff guy. I would actually like Weeks in the two spot for that reason. I think he is a better fit there than Kendall and Hardy. I actually thought hardy didnt do well there in the past.
  14. OPS is an extremely important stat, but so is K's for a number 2 hitter or any hitter for that matter. Here are the K stats - Hall 46, Weeks 32, Cameron 24, and Hardy 22. Cameron has more K's than Hardy in 24 fewer games. Hall has twice as many. To me that also shows how bad a hitter is doing, as well as OBP which Hardy is .40 points higher than Hall and .30 points higher than Cameron. I think those stats show it is a tight three way battle for worst hitter between Hall, Cameron, and Hardy, with Weeks in the mix. I would go for Hall as the worst hitter right now, just because of his terrible average, OBP, and K's. But a good argument could be made for the others.
  15. What are to Dodgers needs to begin with? They seem to have pitching depth with Penny, Billingsly, Lowe, Kuroda and Kershaw on the way. I guess they could use a 4/5 until Kershaw comes. They have a nice bullpen. They are set at C, 1B, 3B, and in the OF with Either, Kemp, Jones and Pierre. They could use improvement there but Pierre and Jones have big contracts and are there for a while. Since Furcal and Kent are FA their needs would be SS or 2B after this year, assuming they are not signed. SP may be a need with Lowe being a FA. Penny has an option that will be picked up. So all we really have for them is Weeks, Hardy, Hall or Escobar. Obviously, I would love to deal Hall and he could be their 2B or SS, but I dont think he has a ton of trade value right now. Although this is the Dodgers.
  16. I agree this team needs a left-handed bat, or at least righties who do not have extreme splits like some of our guys do. I name I have brought up a couple times is Andy LaRoche. LA has two young 3B. DeWitt is a lefty but if you look at LaRoche's numbers his split are almost the same. At a couple levels he hit RHP pitching better. In a perfect world this team needs another lefty bat. But I would rather get a top end starting pitcher with Prince, because I think that is a bigger need than a lefty bat. I wonder if we could do a separate trade to Seattle for Clement. The problem is if the trade doesnt involve Prince to get Clement it would have to involve Gamel or LaPorta who need to be here if Prince is traded.
  17. I definitely think Hammond is the best of the group and the one to get most excited about. The other 3 are harder to project because of their low K totals. Like Rillo I would like to know what what Welch has for pitches. I know Narron, who is now in AAA and had a nice first start, has a great change, and not a ton of speed on his fastball. And I dont know about Miller. I thought I had read somewhere this Spring in one of the minor league publications that Miller was a guy to keep an eye one in the Milwaukee system since he was a lefty. His K numbers are down this year compared to last in the same league. His end to last year at Huntsville over 11 games was better statistically that this year has been.
  18. Why did Jones get bumped up to AA instead of Hand? Hand has been terrific other than low K numbers. Do they just want to see what they have with Jones, because he A ball numbers were not that impressive.
  19. He has been talked about a little in the Prince Fielder trade stuff. How about giving him his own topic though. He looks perfect on paper in some ways. If Gamel can't cut it at 3B I think we need someone because I just don't Bill Hall is that guy. Blake DeWitt is up for the Dodgers and hitting really well. LaRoche is someone the whose name has been floated around in other rumors for the Dodgers. LaRoche is a terrific OBP guy. He has had an OBP near or above .400 the last three years in the minors and has shown a little pop. What would it take to get him? What would the Dodgers look for in return? We have some outfield prospects or Bill Hall. He could do multiple things for them on the infield.
  20. He is arbitration eligible next year and Ryan Howard got 10 million in his first year. The Brewers are going to half to pay a lot in arbitration over three years to Prince. They do "control" him but it will cost them. If they trade him they can get a young front-end starter and at least one more player. They could also afford to sign pitcher or extend other players with the money they would save. To me it is the smartest decision they could make. However I would not trade him for Blanton and Street. I think they can get a young stud pitcher.
  21. The only guys we could get Cleveland's starting pitching for in my mind are Hall or Weeks. I would trade Hall in a second if Cleveland was up for it. He has the home runs that someone might desire but he really isn't doing anything else right now. I just we had another option at 3B outside of Counsell, Branyan, or Dillion. If only Gamel's glove was ready
  22. I dont know a ton about Brantley's fielding so I have a question for people in the know. What outfield would you think is a better fielding outfield Braun/Brantley/Hart or Braun/Hart/LaPorta? Obviously, the second is a better hitting outfield, but my assumption would be that the first is a better fielding one but I could be wrong. LaPorta at 1B would have to improve our infield D as well because he could not be worse than Prince in my mind.
  23. I still believe Branyan should be brought up to almost platoon with Hall. Here are my reasons. One, they are essentially the same player right now in some ways. They both have home run potential every time they go up there. They both strike out a lot (Hall is striking out over 25% of the time). So, it isn't like we would be losing anything starting Braynan, actually he would walk a ton more than Hall. Second, Hall has crazy bad splits against RHP compared to LHP. His OBP and OPS vs LHP are almost double what they are vs RHP. To me that shows he is a platoon guy right now. My other reasons for bringing Branyan up are similar to others mentioned. I am sick of being down two late in a game with a guy on but only to have either gwynn or counsell go out there. It is nice to have a guy who is a threat to tie it with one swing.
  24. Every Weeks thread fills up quick because there are some people who love his potential and look at the positives in his game and cling to those things along with his potential. Other people I think get sick of the potential talk and want immediate results. He came with so much hype and really outside of a great end to last year he hasnt lived up to it and he has obvious holes in his game. I am a big Weeks supporter but i am going to stay out of this argument because I feel like a lot of what is said about him is a rehash of a couple other threads, but I will keep reading because I am intrigued by the polarizing views on Rickie.
  25. Welch is looking decent, but Hammond, Narron, and Miller are all looking better in my mind and they are all lefties and in the 24-26 year old range. I think they would all get called up first. I think Hammond will be the first.
