  1. Woodruff was throwing 98 in the playoffs. Bumgarner was throwing 91 last season (in his prime he was at 93-94). Velocity isn't everything but I'm not paying market price for a huge risk at this point. Maybe Bumgarner just wasn't back up to speed after his random injuries, but the Giants are asking for a big name package at this point and I'm not willing to pay it. Maybe if the price goes down as the article suggests I'd consider it: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/madison-bumgarner-wont-fetch-the-giants-that-much/ Honest question. Didnt Woodruff's velocity spike up when he went to the bullpen? How high would it be as a starter? Would he be able to maintain upper 90s or would he slip back to 93-94 range
  2. The undervaluing of Bumgarner on this board surprises me. People bring up the park that he pitches in but remember Chacin pitched in a pitchers part too before coming to Milwaukee and it turned out pretty good for him
  3. Gomes to the Nationals. The Brewers looked positioned to land a catcher if they really desire to.
  4. How many young arms like Woodruff/Burnes/Peralta do you see with the stuff they show and making they impact they made at the MLB level? These guys don't grow on trees, would you rather pay those guys league min or pay Samardja 18 million a year the next 3 years. All 3 of those guys will probably be better than Samardja almost immediately and have a ton of upside. And Hiura is rated as one of the best pure hitters in the minors right behind Vlad, and he's also showing a ton of power. If he was a Yankee or Cub, he'd probably be a top 5 prospect in baseball. Mind you, those guys are clearly in a tier far above guys like Ray, Brown, Turang, etc. It's not as simply as "well this player is good, therefore we have to give up our best prospect". It's not that simple when our best young players are better players than the guy we are getting. With more and cheaper control. Did I miss discussion about Samardzija? I thought everyone has been talking about Baumgartner who is a ton better than Samardzija. And only costs 12 million or something this year
  5. I know. I get Baumgartner only has one year left but it is a really reasonable price and his down numbers are still pretty averaged 19 starts and an era of 3.3 while averaging over 6 innings per start. At his contract and with what he has done in the past he is going fetch at least a Woodward type player. Who is this Woodward you speak of? Thanks. I fixed it to negate any future confusion
  6. Or young, controllable, top end, can't miss pitching

  8. Weren't similar things said about verlander
  9. Agreed. I would be fine trading woodruff but no to burnes or peralta
  10. This isnt a terrible move. It is a meh move. Hamels isnt great. He cost a good bit of money, but the Cubs have money. This deal was made necessary by terrible deals with Chatwood and Darvish. They have a ton of money invested into a very old and not amazing staff. The Cubs now have for next year Lester at 27 million Darvish at 20 million Hamels at 20 or 14 million - I am trying to sort that out in this thread! Chatwood at 12 million Quintana at 10.5 million Kendricks is arby eligible probably 8 million. That is 98 million into what is not a super impressive rotation. 98 million! That is crazy. One number I saw had the Brewers payroll in June of this year at 96 million for the whole team
  11. They can trade Huira but Merrifield would be a disappointing return. If you trade Huira it should be a starting pitcher not a 30 year old 2b
  12. 2 of his last 3 months we're in the .770s. the other was also under .900. So the last 3 months we're tough on him. It definitely could be the grind or pitchers figure him out. To my eyes his two strike approach was much worse down the stretch. He seemed to chase a lot more
  13. So much of this lineup is just what version of guys are you getting next year. Are you getting 1st half or 2nd half versions of Braun, Aguilar, and Arcia. Even Pina was a pretty drastic difference. Yelich, Cain and Shaw were the only 3 Brewers to post an OPS over 800 both halves of the season. I see no reason Braun shouldnt also be that type of hitter. Aguilar scares me. His first have was aided by being a great 2 strike hitter. The second half of the year pitchers were getting him to chase garbage out of the zone with two strikes. It seems like teams figured him out a little. Arcia I am probably higher on than most. His change in approach was very noticeable and should be reproduced well. Pina could be improved. So in my mind we go into the off-season looking at for sure a new 2B. Maybe upgrading catcher. And potentially upgrading 1B. If they find a better option at 3B i could see them going with Shaw at 2B again because Arcia is so good and we shift so much
  14. Thames has had two great halves of baseball - first half of 2017 and 2018 - with an OPS over .900 He has had one solid one with an - second half 2017 - with OPS right about .800 He has had one terrible half - second half this year - with an OPS of .565 As bad as the second half was this year when he started he still sported an OPS of .827. That is solid. That has value. GMs are smart enough to not just look at one bad half of baseball when he was mostly trying to pinch hit to see if a guy is good. Now he isnt getting us an all start but he could net a very useful piece
  15. Will there be room for Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta in the rotation? If not one will be great out of the pen. I could easily see one being packaged in the right deal. The Brewers have the ammo to make a big splash if Stearns wants to give up young talent (one of the pitchers, Huira, Ray). They have the ammo to strengthen part of the roster from depth (Anderson, Davies, Thames, Santana, Broxton). It will be a very interesting off-season.
  16. IF this team could get a lefty 2b who gets on base at a really good clip the lineup would be really dangerous. If they went out and a made a splash for Realmuto they could also move him up the lineup. Cain Realmuto Yelich Braun Shaw Aguilar/Thames 2b Arcia That would win a lot of games. I am torn on the TOR starting pitcher because I just dont know if I see it out there. I think I would rather trade for Realmuto and sign Miley while elevating Burnes and Woodruff to the rotation. Keep Anderson or davies for depth with Guerra. Trade the other for a 2b. I think both could bring back a solid player. Maybe they both would have to stay if we trade for Realmuto because I am not sure what he would cost
  17. First must do. Figure out if you can trust Nelson to pitch next year. If, and it is a huge if, Nelson is healthy I dont see a big need getting more help for the rotation. Maybe try to bring back Miley. I really think Peralta, Burnes and Woodruff really should start next year. Chacin is obvious. In the bullpen with Hader, Jeffress and Knebel you obviously have a great start. We NEED a true lefty reliever. Maybe two. I think one of the guys who doesnt make the starting rotation can join Guerra as a multiple inning guy. So if we take 7 relievers - Hader, Jeffress, Knebel, Guerra, guy who doesnt get SP spot, Loogy (NOT Jennings or Cedeno) For bats we are set at OF. I know people want to find a place for Santana but that only happens if Braun plays 1B over Aguilar. Braun, Yelich, and Cain is a great OF. SS is Arcia for sure. 1B is either Aguilar or I guess Braun. We have to figure out 3b and 2b. One is Shaw. There is no reason a lineup of Cain, Yelich, Braun, Shaw, Aguilar, Arcia, a new 2B and catcher shouldnt be able to put up a bunch of runs. I would love an upgrade for Perez So my desires for the off-season 1. Catcher. Realmuto is the dream scenario 2. 2b. 3. Left handed Reliever 4. A healthy Nelson. Or Miley
  18. Man it is sad when a weak grounder is a positive at bat for schoop. He just brings nothing right now
  19. Aguilar looked like he made up his mind he was swinging no matter what. Almost swung at a terrible 2-2 pitch too
  20. Has done it all night. I know! He has a terrible zone. Calling outside strikes. Not calling strikes at the top or bottom of zone. Frustrating
