  1. Imagine how much worse it would be if the Reds would have stuck with Saurez at SS?
  2. This is a big inning with Nyquin, Castellanos and Votto lead off walks are not helpful
  3. After yesterday's games less than 1 week from this post, I believe: Yelich: .758 OPS Brinson: .770 OPS I hope Brinson heats back up again...because it sure seems like Yelich is headed towards the low-mid .800s a few weeks from now despite spending most of this year around .700. That's not just due to yesterday's game either - he has been able to put better swings on the ball with extended playing time staying in the lineup, improved timing and pulling the ball to right center/right field with authority again. Had not paid much attention to Bronson because I don't follow the Marlins. Now they are playing the Reds and he has been brutal this series. So many men left on base and is in a 2 for 22 slump. Come on Lewis at least you could have stayed got for this series
  4. The Reds are 10-7 so far in August while with over half those games coming against the Twins, Cubs, and Pirates. They are actually under .500 this month when playing teams outside the Pirates. It is just hard for me to get too worked up about them catching us And I realize how poorly this post could age and that it could be material to be bumped later in the year
  5. The Reds have a very good offense but I dont think they have the pitching for a really sustained run. Their starting pitching just isnt that good this year. This version of Sonny Gray and Luis Castillo are 4.5 ERA guys. They have one starter with an ERA under 3.7. The Brewers have 5. Maybe people think Gray and Castillo will rebound but they havent given much of an indication they will as even recently they (along with Mahle) have more back of the rotation numbers. Really only Guitierrez has been better lately but if you look at his peripherals it seems really shaky - doesnt strike guys out, gives up a hit per inning with a WHIP around 1.3. Their bullpen is better with Givens, Lorenzen and Cessa but none of those guys have an track record that makes you think they are really good. If your pitching is that suspect your offense has to be so good every night and that is just really hard to sustain. Or if your starting pitching isnt great you need to be able to do what CC did where he had started get two times through the order and then mixed and matched in the bullpen. The reds simply cannot do that with their bullpen.
  6. Burnes has given up 1 run or less in 8 of his last 9 starts. I understand Wheeler has pitched more innings and is having a really solid year but Burnes has been outstanding
  7. The next 9 games will go a long way in determining how comfortable I am. If we win 2 of 3 against the Cards and 11 game lead with 40 to play would feel pretty great. Then we get the free falling nationals at home. 2 of 3 there would be nice. A sweep would be huge. If we win both those series and we go into a 3 game set against the Reds likely up 8. Take 2 of 3 against them and we are up 9 with 34 to play. If we lost a couple of those 1-2 then it will start to get tight especially with the Reds playing minor league teams much of the way.
  8. 7 for his last 20 with 2 walks. Only 2 doubles so the power is still not there but hopefully he really is turning a corner.
  9. What proof at all is there that Yelich was cheating? The Darvish stuff and the one video that showed nothing? Seems like a huge stretch. I would say his knee injury and back problems seem way more likely causes for his steep regression.
  10. I think Lauer profiles as a solid 4/5 starter which has a lot of value for us. He is much cheaper than a free agent. Urias has shown so much more power than I expect so I am intrigued to see how that plays out. I liked this trade when we made it. Was feeling regret by the end of last year and now am back to liking it. Honestly it may just be time for me to trust Stearns and our scouting department. They obviously like what they saw in these guys and then with Adames and Tellez they have brought in 4 controllable players who have been very key contributors
  11. Another tip of the hat to David Stearns. Our infield lineup at the beginning of the year included Wong, Urias, Hiura, and Arcia or Shaw with the other one being the first infielder off the bench. That has been changed to Wong, Adames, Escobar, and Tellez, with Urias being the utility guy. Adames has an OPS of .935 as a Brewer Tellez has an OPS of .980 as a Brewer Escobar has an OPS of 1.000 as a Brewer Shaws ops was .616, Hiura .558, and Arcia .182 (in very limited time with us) Stearns improved the infield immensely and only gave up J.P., Rasmussen, Bowden Francis, Hummel, and Ciprian. On top of that Adames and Tellez have multiple years of control yet so they can help solidify the infield going forward. Stearns also was wise enough to go after Wong without banking on Hiura rebounding, and trusted Urias could be a major contributor at multiple spots. The talent and depth he acquired during the season for the cost is pretty incredible. The Brewers give guys time to work out of slumps but they have no issue finding a safety net or back up plan in case guys dont produce. You can say the same for our numerous outfielders.
  12. Adames is the only starting position player to not reach base at least twice today! And he still had a hit and two rbis. Man playing the Cubs is fun
  13. I’ve said it for awhile now. He’s the perfect backup. He should never be the main guy but he’s awesome as a backup. I completely agree. And if the guy in front of him gets hurt for a bit and Pina needs to start for a few week Pina has been prone to some nice hot streaks.
  14. I have come around on Pina. His average may never be high but a back up catcher with pop and great defense is valuable. Even when he is struggling I still think there is a chance he could hit one out and for a back up catcher that seems like a big win
  15. https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2021/08/11/christian-yelichs-huge-extension-hasnt-even-kicked-in-yet-and-he-is-struggling/ I get Yelich is struggling but do we really need so many posts about it in an igt when the team is up 10? There is already a thread for it on the main page. Maybe I am in the minority but the Yelich stinks posts are feeling redundant at this point
