  1. Yo was a top 20 prospect the Cubs dont have anyone to match that. Now you are right they can get the pitching but they are going to have to trade a lot of pieces to get top line pitching. Are they going to want to go after rentals like the Brewers did with CC, Greinke, and Marcum? It is tough to trade for very good, young pitching. It can be done but the Brewers had to cripple a farm system to do it. The perk the Cubs have is they have been terrible and will be for another year or two so they will have another couple top picks to add to that farm system. I am not trying to say what the Cubs did was wrong. I think it was a move they needed to make but I also dont think adding starting pitching is as easy as some here are making it out to be. We only got CC for a half a season. To get a year and a half of Marcum and Greinke we gave up Lawrie, Escobar, Odorizzi, Cain, Jeffress. The benefit the Cubs have is with their potential payroll they could probably sign the guys they trade for to long term deals
  2. I was with a couple Cubs fans this weekend and they were very disappointed in the trade. They know they got a very good prospect but I think they just saw their team in the last for at least another season maybe more with their lack of starting pitching. Even if you look at their top prospect only 1 of their top 10 is a pitcher and he is currently in AA and hurt. Outside of Arrieta they have no starting pitching that impresses me and that is a lot of money you would need to spend. I would think they will have to trade some of their impact bats for some pitching.
  3. Great start for jungmann so far. 7 innings just two hits and 8 k's. That is nice to see
  4. Probably the same people who said Sergura couldnt play SS
  5. You also forgot how much time Henderson has missed and Kintzler hasn't been as effective as the team hoped for. It's mainly been the three additions of Smith, Duke, and K-Rod which has allowed the Brewers to hold on and win so many close games. All three have been fantastic and i'll admit that when the roster was initially picked, i wasn't a fan of keeping Duke. Glad i was so wrong. Yeah I mentioned Henderson in a different place but forgot him in that post. If Melvin wouldnt have signed K-Rod and Duke and traded for Smith where would this team be? Who would be closing games at this point.
  6. Oh you are obviously right that we havent had the injury issues of some I was just pointing out we have had some injuries to key guys like Ramirez and Henderson who was supposed to be a key guy. I give Melvin credit on the bullpen because our closer went down before the start of the season, Thornburg has missed a lot of time, Kintzler missed time and Gorzelanny has missed a bunch of time as well. In the midst of all that the bullpen has still been very good because moves he made turned out well.
  7. Not trying to pile on but really? Things that just dont ring true to me? 1. They have been lucky this year. Injuries to their closer and a very versatile relief man. Ramirez missed significant time forcing the team to start Reynolds at 3rd and Overbay at 1st. Braun has missed time but not a ton. Also guys hitting as well as you would expect and pitching well is not luck. It is a well put together team 2. Everyone outside of Segura and 1st hitting isnt fully true. At 3rd Ramizez has missed almost 1/3 of the games and so we were not getting production out of either of the corner spots. Also Khris Davis was brutal for the first month. 3. The bullpen being fantastic and the rotation being solid is a credit to Melvin. He traded for Smith, resigned KRod, signed Lohse and Garza. 4. How about great deals for Gomez and Lucroy? 5. How about not just releasing Weeks when some here were calling for that? 6. How about giving a long leash to guys like Davis and Segura trusting the young guys to turn it around?
  8. Just wanted to bump this thread as the Brewers currently sit 17 games over .500. Melvin has built a team with a very solid lineup and a rotation that is doing the job. The bullpen has taking some hits with injuries but this team is a lot of fun to follow and watch.
  9. I saw a couple mocks with him falling to 10. I agree he is a great high risk high reward type guy for a team in full tank mode
  10. How far does Embiid slip? Would he slip all the way to 10? Could the Bucks trade down with Philly and get the 3 and 10 and land Exum and Embiid?
  11. I love Clint Coutler. His power is there. His patience is there. He leads the league in OPS and is quite a bit younger than most of the guys who are close to him. All that on top of the fact that I would assume he is getting much more coaching on his fielding that hitting right now. He is probably my favorite prospect right now because his bat could be so special. I love that Haniger is now top 5 in the Southern League in home runs. He had an awful start so I will probably be much more focused on his splits after that first month or so. His OPS in June is over 1.100. Glad to see him get it together because I think he can become a solid everyday OFer. Tyrone Taylor has fallen off quite a bit since his hot start. I am at the point with hitting prospects I just want to see them get out of Brevard without harm to their confidence. Same for Arcia. Both are very young for the league so I am still pretty excited about their bats. Michael Reed is interesting. He doesnt have much for power but he can run and is able to get on base at an insane clip. Not sure what others think of his projections Zarraga continues to rake but at 25 in AA I am not sure what to make of him Are there other guys you all pay attention to?
  12. They havent gotten a top 5 pick in a while.
  13. His defensive numbers are over inflated as shown here http://forum.brewerfan.net/posting.php?mode=quote&f=63&p=897288 This piece shows how he was being used and how it inflated his numbers. http://thecutoffman.mlblogs.com/2012/07/02/defensive-shifts-part-iii-the-blue-jays-use-of-brett-lawrie/
  14. Yeah leaving out Coulter doesnt make sense. His bat will play well at other positions. His power and ability to take walks at such a young age is incredibly impressive
  15. Brett Lawrie continues his crazy year. His power numbers are phenomenal. The past 6 games he has only 5 hits but 3 home runs. So 5 for 22 with just one walk but 3 home runs. He is slugging .429 for the year. The opposite side of that is his .237 BA and .284 OBP. He has his OPS up over .700. He is a hard guy to figure out.
  16. I get what you are saying Crew. The Brewers do need a top end starter but those are very hard to find. I dont see any reason Nelson doesnt have #2 starter as his ceiling. I am assuming you have him in your 3-5 group and I understand that but his peripherals are great, he keeps balls on the ground, etc. He was widely panned by many on this board when he was picked but Seid got it right, now he has gotten a lot wrong too, but he nailed it with Nelson. I would say it is very tough to find a true ace in general - how many are there in baseball? And where were most of those guys drafted? Because of how the draft works guys just say they are only signing with certain teams. Seid definitely has his warts. The lack of left-handed pitching is an issue. I could probably be swayed that his job is on the line but his last two years have impressed me. Also watching guys like Nelson, Thornburg, Lucroy, Gennett, and Davis produce makes me think he has a good eye for talent if he could just grow in a couple areas or take more calculated risks.
  17. 2009 was terrible but I actually think his most recent drafts have shown promise. 2010 with Nelson, Thornburg and even Morris has been solid minus the Covey debacle. 2011 has a chance to be okay. Jungmann is now pitching well in AAA. Lopez and Bradley could be decent but that is his second worst draft. I think 2012 looks promising. Coulter, Haniger Taylor. Not bad. Way too early on last year. Jack Z was great but he was able to pick high quite often and he really didnt do well with pitchers. There is a reason the team has had to go out and trade for or sign pitchers (although they could have signed better). He nailed it with Braun and Fielder. Did very well with Weeks, Hart, and Hardy. But the guys missed quite often as well. Dave Krynzel, Mike Jones, Mark Rogers, Jeremy Jeffress, Matt LaPorta, Evan Fredricksen. All drafted in the top 12 except Jeffress and Fredricksen. He definitely hit on some guys but his drafting of pitching wasnt great.
  18. Even with his terrible start Davis has the 4th highest OPS of NL LF. He is ahead of Carlos Gonzalez and Matt Holliday. His May OPS .923 which is 5th of LF in all of baseball.
  19. Lawrie has fallen off the past few days. 3 for 27 with 7 k's and just 1 BB. His OPS is back down to .674 with an OBP of .275. He reminds me so much of Hardy in how streaky he is. I guess you can look at his season in two ways. If he starts getting more hits to fall he could move in the respectable range. If his power falls off though his numbers will be terrible. He is actually is 28th out of 32 in OBP for 3B. That is awful. Even with solid power numbers his OPS is 23 out of 32.
  20. Hasnt done a good job with Golden State? The team was awful when he took over and the last two years he was 98-66. They lost in the 2nd round to the Spurs last season and then in 7 to a very good Clippers team. If Golden State was in the East they would be the second best team. Jackson is getting punished for being in a far superior conference. There has to be more to this story than on the court performance. Golden State is a poorly constructed team outside of the guard play. In the playoffs they were starting Draymond Green, a rapidly declining Iguodala and then David Lee at C. To go to 7 with the Clippers with that being your front court is pretty impressive.
  21. Found some great stats about the Brewer's hot start in this article http://statsontapp.com/2014/04/24/can-the-milwaukee-brewers-make-mlb-history-in-april/. The most wins in April is 21 by the New York Yankees in 2003. The Brewers have already broken their franchise record of 16 in the month of April. Only 24 other teams have ever started with 18 wins in April.
  22. Totally off topic, but as a non-Packer who lives around Packer fans, I hate how they always say that it doesn't pay to make the playoffs if they don't think they can win the Super Bowl. Everyone I knew wanted them to lose to the Bears at the end of last season because they didn't have a team that was good enough to win the Super Bowl so it was pointless to make the playoffs anyway. I dont know who you hang out around but I am a Packer fan and I dont know anyone who said this. I watched the Bears game with a ton of Packers and the room was going nuts when Rodgers hit Cobb. I dont know a single person who would rather miss the playoffs than make them.
  23. Carlino shot 39% from the field, 34% from 3 and only 69% from the line. That is not a go to shooter. He has a nice 2:1 assist to turnover ratio so he should help Marquette but he isnt a great shooter. He is better than Derrick Wilson though. I am surprised Marquette went out to get a guard with Jujuan Johnson, Duane Wilson and John Dawson looking to get minutes. It seems like Mayo and Carlino will take a ton of minutes. Early on they will have to play with three guards so one of those three could start but I am guessing they want Burton at the SF, Taylor at PF, and Fischer at C once Fischer is eligible
  24. Right! His stuff will improve and he'll learn to repeat his delivery through osmosis and progress as a pitcher by not actually pitching, because that theory has worked for whom in the past? Crew, you've constantly bashed the organization for having Lee Tunnell as the bullpen coach at the major league level instead of keeping him on the minor league side to help develop young arms on the farm. But now that Wang is in the bullpen, and presumably working closely with Tunnell during his plentiful off time, he isn't going to develop at all? Those two stances seem to be at the very least somewhat contradictory. You could have just stopped after the part in bold. Crew has some really solid takes but his dislike for Melvin as a GM and how the organization is run in general leads him to make comments that seem the organization cannot do anything right. You bring up a good example. Wang will have to pitch at some point and it will probably be in games when we are done by 5 runs. I dont see why putting him in when the game is close is necessary. Does anyone really think we are going to be in 3 run games the rest of the year? We will have a few games where we get blown out and a few where we blow other teams out. If it starts costing us games I will complain more
