Who does Demovsky work for again? Oh yeah, the same network that likely ginned this story up on draft day based largely off conjecture - if he's that certain he'll never play for the Packers again how come he's spent the past 3+ months NOT writing about it after their NFC championship game loss....the only thing that has changed since then is the Packers' front office doing all sorts of salary cap gymnastics trying to hold the team together to make another run with Rodgers at the helm. Maybe Rodgers just isn't as invested in football at this stage in his career mentally and he realizes that - getting through this last pandemic-riddled season only to end in another bitter disappointment in missing a super bowl, getting engaged, perhaps realizing the finality that comes with a football career ending while also seeing future horizons for pursuits off the field...couple that with his injury and concussion history, it wouldn't surprise me if he's pushing to go out on his terms. To me he always came off as a guy who might want to hang 'em up earlier than most thought he needed to - and that's no slight on Rodgers. There's definitely smoke to Rodgers potentially not wanting to play in Green Bay again...but I don't really feel like it's solely because he wants to keep playing but is desperate to do so elsewhere. I think he's got second thoughts about continuing to play period, but he wants to hang 'em up on his terms and not repeat how his predecessor's tenure wound up in GB with the front office making the call on when they were moving on - I think he's pushing for an extension that ends his career in Green Bay 4-5 seasons from now or he's retiring. We went through this sort of saga for 2-3 years as Favre approached the end of his career - Rodgers lived through that and in a way it doesn't surprise me if he wants to jump the gun and move forward to something new to avoid his legacy resembling Favre's in the "will he/won't he" retire fiasco.

This whole article could have been drummed up based on Rodgers telling a random staffer off the cuff while taping Jeopardy that "it would be cool playing the last few years of my career in my home state of CA, so I could live closer to my fiance' and keep taping Jeopardy" As for the Packers not being financially committed to Rodgers past 2021...so freaking what? It's not like he's playing out his rookie deal - he's currently in the last guaranteed contract year of his THIRD extension and 4th total contract with the Packers. I just don't buy it - Rodgers seems like an intelligent enough guy who never has to look hard for a camera or beat writer to get in front of that if he really wanted out of Green Bay because of contract/personnel decisions, we would hear it directly from him or his direct representation. Not conspicuous "league and team sources" that could just be speculating themselves based on all the run his recent game show hosting gig had on ESPN the last few weeks.

Regardless of how spectacular the Brewers' defense and pitching has been so far this season, how many posters would have said the Brewers would be in 1st place in their division at the end of April if they knew they would get essentially zero offense out of Hiura and both Cain/Yelich were going to be hampered/out with injuries well more than half of the month? And in agreement with the previous post - scoring is down in general across the league to start the year, even more than 2020 and over half a run/game/team compared to 2019. Whether this is small sample size ready to regress towards more scoring as weather warms up and hitters get back to the typical season routine or its further evidence of pitching outpacing hitters in terms of success remains to be seen....either way, the Brewers are far from the only team with offensive question marks 1 month into the season.

When I was in middle school/high school, most of these academies/camps that were going on for various sports were mainly held during summer months outside of the school year and separated from various fall/winter/spring sports seasons. That enabled kids who were multisport athletes or interested in trying a bunch of different sports out to be able to develop and compete in multiple sports, plus get additional training/development during the summer in a sport (or sports) they wanted to pursue further. Nowadays, there are often travel leagues/camps going on year round, and they constantly infringe on the traditional sports seasons - sometimes even the same league season their own sport is playing out at the high school level. I've got friends whose girls barely know which uniform they have to yank out of the dryer on their way out the door to either a high school volleyball match, select team basketball camp, or softball practice. I know for certain that if I were a teenager right now, there's no way I would have been running cross country in the fall, and I probably would have been hardpressed to play basketball long enough to finally develop once I got into highschool to play it at the varsity level at an all-conference level for a couple years. I was young for my age and was always lagging in physical development through middle school, riding the pine in some travel basketball leagues but still able to practice and play enough to get better. Baseball was always my #1 sport and it did take precedent in summers when deciding which other camps I would partake in, but it would have stunk to essentially need to give up on playing competitive basketball because I "wasn't good enough" in 7th grade. I will say to me the biggest issue with this is in the team sports, not so much individual sports where the individual kids and parents have alot more control about practice/development/camps - the peer pressure and time/financial commitment aspects these team sport academies push onto families is out of hand, particularly at the middle school level, IMO.

And they are having to gut draft picks that have the potential to bring in young and cheap talent to acquire a guy they'll instantly need to slap a franchise tag on while figuring out how to make the contracts work to keep him, their QB, and a competitive roster around longterm....primarily because they are paying said franchise QB a huge portion of their salary cap for the next 10 years. They saw what happened in the Super Bowl last year when both of their tackles couldn't play...then they had to cut them for cap reasons.

Amen....I don't mind the community education programs that introduce various sports to younger kids and also help build that foundation of playing with peers, but the other week my brother in law asked me if I had found an indoor batting cage facility for my boys to practice hitting over the winter so they had a good chance at making teams for next year. My response was - "they are 6 and 4."

If the Brewers' bats do their typical vanishing act against Hendricks over the next couple of innings, I'm really hoping multiple position players toe the bump so they don't burn their pen out....they don't have an off day on the calendar for the next 2.5 weeks.

This has all the feel of being one of those run differential killers we look back on three months from now as an example the Brewers' actual record far and away exceeds what their Pythag record says it should be...

I mean, Texas hasn't had a mask mandate in a little more than a month and they removed gathering restrictions as well. That's not to say they issued a "No mask" mandate that forced people not to wear masks, but if masks actually are the main reason COVID doesn't spread like wildfire they'd be seeing worse than their lowest extended run of new cases since last June - especially considering what's going on at their southern border right now from a COVID standpoint. I'm sure their numbers will go up again in June like they did last year when the air conditioners are running nonstop down there and everyone races back inside - but it won't be because people haven't been forced to wear masks since March. If people actually choose not to get vaccinated to reduce their risk of severe symptomatic COVID, which is the strongest scientifically-based action they can take to protect themselves selfishly, people are going to then want to have indefinite and largely unenforceable mask/gathering restrictions many of those same folks won't adhere to anyway? Why not just get vaccinated and not worry about those that can't be persuaded to take advantage of it? And once government as a whole lifts the mandates, businesses will fall like dominos right behind them - for businesses it's all about not having any chance of getting sued. For some reason the privately held drug companies manufacturing vaccines administered to the general public under an emergency use authorization have blanket liability protection, but by and large private businesses haven't been afforded that protection by Uncle Sam - at least to the point where they aren't still very gunshy.

It is so refreshing to watch pure filth pouring out of the right arm of a homegrown Brewers pitcher that could have been drafted by any other team multiple times before the Brewers pulled the trigger. Even more awesome that Burnes had to work through a really bad stretch to get to this point in his development.

If you go into youth sports realizing 95% of the select/travel teams exist as a business that essentially caters to parent egos saying their kid can be great in order to take their money under the guise of making their kid the next Yelich, LeBron, etc., its much easier to put the best interest of your kid 1st and pick what leagues/sports are best for them from both a development and an enjoyment perspective. I'm firmly of the opinion that if a kid is talented enough at a particular sport or sports, there will be opportunities for them down the road no matter what summer league teams they play on when they are middle or even high schoolers. Im about to enter into this realm myself with kids approaching youth sports activities, and its insane how quickly various communities try to start feeder/select teams that are more about who you know or whats in your bank account than a child's ability.

The other thing this article got me thinking about was how much Jimmy Nelson improved as a pitcher once Stearns and company showed up after some offseason tinkering...and how insane the rotation would be right now had that 2017 version of Jimmy remained instead of ruining his shoulder sliding into a 1st base.

Something to keep in mind related to consistent angst over farm system rankings in recent years - when the Brewers had a very highly regarded farm system from 2016-2017 and it was gutted of many of the prospects that led to its high regard (Ortiz, Brinson, Diaz, Harrison, Medeiros, Dubon, Yamamoto, etc). Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta were in that mix but never were thought of as headline prospects for a system rankings service....throw in Devin Williams and others currently on the Milwaukee MLB pitching staff, too. Right this moment despite a low system ranking, the strength of the Brewers' farm appears to be pitching. Under Stearns, one thing the Brewers have done a much, much better job at is identifying and developing their own pitching talent - and seemingly understanding which of those arms was worth retaining and which would be most valuable to the organization to include in trades to bolster the MLB roster.
