  1. As a quite casual fan of college football, I didn't realize until tonight that the Orange Bowl halftime show is kind of Superbowlesque, with a "name" band performing. Imagine the outrage if Wisconsin ever made this bowl and its band couldn't appear.
  2. Part of me would like to see Z thrown into a rage by the Marlins' ridiculous new home run "feature."
  3. Hahahahaha. And here I was going to invite you to be in the mini-sausage race. Just for that, I'd better be one of the three friends you invite to sit with you in the owner's seats. I'd totally shadow Adam McCalvy. I could look down on our regular Friday/Sunday seats. And I've seen (though not sampled) that sundae bar they have in the press cafeteria.
  4. I don't know about horribly cynical, but I wonder if that would achieve the goal you want. My interpretation of that sort-of loophole was that you could follow links from a JS Twitter/Facebook presence (so you'd still be kind-of committing to them first, at least with your handle/email). If I link a JS Online story on my Twitter, and you follow me, I don't know whether that would count against the 20. And although no one asked, it has now been more than 48 hours and I've not heard back from the JS regarding my subscription attempt. I feel like such a valued potential customer.
  5. Link to "John and Cait" blog entry The Brewers will again have a 40-day, 40-prize drawing from its pool of season ticket customers. Some of the prizes are the same as 2011, while some are new: Season ticket customers who have already renewed or paid up for 2012 are already entered. Persons who become season ticket customers during the 40-day promotion period will be eligible for the next day's prize and remaining prizes. I remember stating last year that I was pretty sure I wouldn't want a photo of me to appear on a game ticket, but after seeing how it worked out for the winner of that prize (whose photo appeared on the season tickets for the division clincher), I might not turn it down, if offered.
  6. Sorry I didn't wave at you, Baldkin. Our seats are between the student section and the visitors' bench, so we didn't have a great view of Ryan's shot at all. The MSU bench occupants were all standing. My first thought was mild surprise that they counted it - seemed to me the hoop light went on just before the ball left his hands. Then I used the stoppage-of-play time before the would-be second overtime to use the bathroom, and saw on the concourse TVs that they were questioning where Ryan's foot was (i.e. 2 points or 3). Then on the radio call they called the timing into question. Oh, and in terms of disheartening, Baldkin, you forgot Saturday's basketball game with Iowa, which we also attended. Here's hoping this means more sports mojo for Wisconsin's professional teams in 2012?
  7. And this is what makes this whole thing stupid. If you read JSOnline, you obviously have the internet, so why not make a twitter account or whatever, follow your favorite writers and wait until they post their articles on twitter? Unless they aren't going to post them on twitter anymore or are going to limit how much they post on twitter. That's what I'm going to do, just use my twitter account for these articles. I too wondered whether this will change how much JSOnline content gets linked on Twitter or Facebook. They may be banking on readers' inability to resist temptation when they go to a 'free' story via link and then see a bunch of teasers for all kinds of other stuff. I am fully confident that the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison will be watching carefully to see how the paywall plays out in Milwaukee. Has anyone here subscribed to the online content? If so, do you see fewer ads while you're logged in?
  8. Someone I had a crush on in high school now has a high-ranking position in the U.S. Department of Commerce. I knew he was employed by the feds, but I didn't know his position was a Presidential appointment. Huh. He's a Yankees fan (or was in high school), so it would never have worked anyway.
  9. I hate to say, fondy, you may want to get used to sites charging for information. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/indifferent.gif My related "bug" is that upon learning of the JS paywall, I considered a Sunday-only subscription. The Journal Sentinel has better coupons than the State Journal and more Brewers coverage by a long, long shot. I followed the "easy" 1-2-3 steps on the JS website to subscribe and got an error message saying that my "change of address request" could not be processed. My guess is the automatic system doesn't work for locations outside southeast Wisconsin. I'm confident that the JS delivers to Madison because our neighbor two houses down gets the print edition every day. Yet, since step 1 was "enter your zip code," you'd think I'd have been stopped there if my zip code wasn't valid for their system. Now I don't know if they have my credit card information or not. My email inquiry was met with a "we'll respond within 48 hours" and the 48 hours is almost up. For what it's worth, JSOnline's paywall FAQs (which I curiously can't locate from their home page this morning, and I'm not going to waste one of my 20 looking for it) suggested that content reached through a Facebook or Twitter link would not count against the "free" 20. Edit: Found it - thanks, Google:
  10. I've become increasingly tempted to edit the subject line to add "Lame-Off 2011/2012."
  11. Like OWBC and others, the Brewers / MLB are my #1 sports interest by far. After that I follow select University of Wisconsin sports. We have season tickets for Badger volleyball and share with someone else season tickets for men's basketball. I'm not much into football, but the football Badgers are hard to ignore since we live in the 'hood and cannot get to work and back without walking/riding right by Camp Randall. My casual sports follows include: College basketball (mostly men's) - I love Championship Week, even more than the NCAA tournament. Yet the NBA doesn't interest me one bit. College hockey (men's and women's) - though like basketball, the NHL doesn't interest me at all. High school basketball. I try to take a day off every year to hang out at the Kohl Center for either the girls' or boys' WIAA tournament, which for me is as much about the atmosphere as it is the hoops on the court. I got burned out on the NFL years ago. Living in Green Bay the two years prior to the Favre era hastened the burnout.
  12. If there's no mention of 'Stallis in the new name, I'm done with this franchise.
  13. I can crank up pitchleague's lameness scale to at least 11. Today brought us disappointing UW basketball at the Kohl Center, lunch at Rocky's on the walk home, and I finally put up the film on the back room windows - ahead of the cold front + gale force winds or whatever awaits us Sunday. Life in the fast lane on a Saturday night! Apart from the April-to-October 9 Brewers' season, 2011 was something of a bust around the hawing household, so I'm not reluctant to see it go.
  14. Good lord. That almost brings tears to my eyes.
  15. Too bad the Gobbler in Johnson Creek is out of business. That would be a central-ish meeting place for southeast and south central Wisconsin. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif In case we go with a Milwaukee meetup this year, I'll point out that we reserved the back room at Fourth Base on National a few years ago and I thought that went well. Since we were the only ones in the back room, we could geek out over baseball to our hearts' content.
  16. Nice, Backupcatchers. I hope you have many happy summers of George. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. Here's a (paraphrased) conversation someone in the S.O.'s family had with me on Christmas Eve: Relative: So! What's this I hear about Prince Fielder signing with the Cubs? hawing: (flashing back to the Christmas Even Suppan signing and thinking OH CRAP to myself but not wanting to react that way outwardly, since some of the S.O.'s family favor the Cubs) Huh. Was that story new this afternoon? because I'd heard nothing about it before leaving for Kenosha at 2:00 today. Relative: Oh, I don't know. I read it somewhere. Couldn't he go anywhere else? hawing: (knowing this guy isn't much into baseball and so panicking less) Well, the Cubs have been one of several rumored suitors. Then he went on to ask me if I'd heard about a MLB guy being kidnapped, and once it was obvious he was talking about Wilson Ramos' kidnapping as if it had just occurred (instead of it being over a month ago), I figured he was just looking for something to talk about. But did it have to be that? Can't I just relax on Christmas Eve? And wouldn't it be just like the Cubs to snag our erstwhile big guy on Christmas Eve?
  18. Wisconsinites party like they're in NOLA? We need tristarscoop to chime in on this one.
  19. Well, the beginning of that formerly-linked clip above was an intro from Vin : "You're listening to Joe Block on KABC." So I'd be surprised if their paths never crossed.
  20. Oh, man, Brewers nation broke Joe's website! I hope he takes this for what it is: a sign of an engaged and eager fanbase.
  21. /squealing at that image/ JimH5, where did you get that image? For you Festivus fans, click here if you'd like to know how the Wisconsin Historical Society has preserved the tradition of the Festivus pole.
  22. He stands at 1193 followers as of 9:05 AM Friday. We'll see how much that increases over the next few days. Maybe less due to Christmas. The clip in the link above sounds promising. I winced just a bit upon seeing he's a Michigan State grad, but hey, we did all right with an avowed Cubs fan. Welcome, Joe! (in case you take a peek) Edit, Friday afternoon: over 1700 followers, six hours later.
  23. You guys have seen those bumperstickers that say, "I'm already against the next war"? I think I can apply that general concept to STL signings, and thus begin to predict which MLB players are going to drive me crazy in 2012. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/indifferent.gif
  24. Well, check out this Washington Post story from earlier this week. Someone at the Post found an iPod shuffle, published the playlist in case the owner or a friend recognized it, and eventually realized that the Get Info on a purchased song would reveal the email associated with the Apple ID. So I tried viewing the tracks in iTunes, but couldn't do it without authorizing my computer to this person's account. So I gave up; "Gillian" will have to find a newer way than her banged-up 80GB iPod Classic to listen to her iTunes content; and we will be rocking out, quietly, at the library to end finals week. Thanks for the input!
  25. Well, there's plenty of room in the what's bugging you thread for continued posts about TV news. Apologies if this has already been posted in this mega-thread of many tangents, but at least it's actually related to the Braun situation, and doesn't appear to start new rumors. Will Carroll's pondering (link while active; text follows)
