  1. My memory is much the same. The spring semester of 1982 was when I was student driving. Two other girls and I were assigned Friday afternoons to drive with the driver's ed teacher. Several Fridays were bad weather for winter driving - like early dismissal bad weather - and this teacher would be all, "Welp, ready to get out there?" I also remember the terraces in Monroe being piled so high with snow that when we did go driving, the teacher wouldn't let me go through an intersection until I could see that no traffic was coming - which required edging out into the intersection. Punch line (not related to weather): between my sophomore year and my sister's sophomore year five years later, the driver's ed teacher earned himself an OWI conviction. He was allowed to drive for his job (which of course was TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO DRIVE).
  2. Huh. I remember the winter of 1981-1982 being intense in terms of snowfall, but I'd have to look at my teenage diaries (gulp) to see what I thought about Cold Sunday. In south central Wisconsin (Monroe for sure), Christmas 1983 was especially nasty cold. I remember this because it was the only time I have ever attended a midnight Mass (my brother was serving at it), and the wind chill was reportedly in the 70s below zero. About an hour ago, the NWS issued a Wind Chill Warning (not just Advisory) for most if not all of Wisconsin for varying parts of Sunday through Tuesday, so that should take care of a lot of K-12 school activity at least on Monday.
  3. Welp, it's certainly wintry enough to think about a winter meeting. I can't speak for everyone who attended last year, but I thought meeting at the Miller Park Friday's worked really well. Of course, it helped that they kind of messed up our reservation and put us in their private room for free. We were able to actually converse without having to shout. At present, I'd expect two in the hawing party. March 2014 has five Saturdays: the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The Brewers have an exhibition game on March 29. March 15 is probably when any watering hole worth its salt is all ST PATRICK'S DAY. Heat up the stove!
  4. That January 1994 super cold snap was something else. Madison had three consecutive -27 degree lows, which I think are still records. An HVAC failure in my library's building led to a gush of water in part of our stacks one day that month, which in a historical research library is not good news. Although the cold probably contributed to the HVAC problem, it also allowed us to freeze-dry damaged collections by just storing them in a rented truck, instead of renting a refrigerated truck.
  5. I wonder if Betty White will opt to be buried near Allen Ludden. That'd put Mineral Point on the map for a new (if not 100% welcome) reason.
  6. That is AWESOME. Merry Christmas to you and hammytime!
  7. I'd have guessed for sure Cloris Leachman was in her 90s, but that shows what I know. I was mildly surprised by the omission of Mary Tyler Moore, but Wikipedia shows me she's but a spring chicken at 76. Family legend says that my parents only had a boy's name ready for me; when I turned out to be not a boy they had to scramble, and my dad named me for MTM's Laura Petrie character from the Dick Van Dyke Show.
  8. There is a Milwaukee Braves wall of honor, and another spot honoring Wisconsin-born players. A Brewers wall of honor would be new. My first thought upon seeing the headline was that it might be an opportunity for someone like CC Sabathia (whose tenure was too brief for the walk of fame but man, it still seems significant), but the criteria listed in the link in the lead post wouldn't support him on the wall either: In CC's case, I guess the brevity outweighs the significance. Oh well.
  9. I grew up with the Rankin Bass kid shows - as an example, I remember when Year Without A Santa Claus (featuring the Heat and Snow Misers) was the new kid on the TV block, in 1974 - and also consider A Charlie Brown Christmas the gold standard of non-stopaction Christmas animation. These shows are more my "can't miss" Christmas viewing than movies. However, I enjoy It's a Wonderful Life and selected scenes from A Christmas Story (which I rarely get to see all the way through, despite its omnipresence from the 24th-25th). Because I'm dorky, I also try to watch The Homecoming every December. It's an early-1970s Christmas movie that served as kind of the pilot for The Waltons. I don't know if TV Land still does its weekend Merrython, when they show Christmas episodes of the classic TV shows in their arsenal. Those are fun too; they're shows I remember being around when I was a kid, but not necessarily shows I watched as a kid.
  10. The only answer is "too many," isn't it?
  11. We were at that Ohka-bats-lefty game. That was awesome. JHJ reminds me of the peak of the Brewers' 2011 season, so I wish him well.
  12. Devin Harris.
  13. Well, that's a kick in the fan gut for me. Corey was my boy. MY BOY. For serious?! Because I could easily imagine seeing blue text with that.
  14. That is precisely what I was thinking. Were the sources in that Seattle Times story secretly still Brewers employees?
  15. That is why I've come to really appreciate what Bo Ryan has put together: because he's had relatively few of the early exiters, and guys staying four years has been the norm. I suppose that makes me so uncompetitive as to be practically un-American, but maybe it's the XX chromosomes talking, plus basketball is mostly my "get through the baseball offseason" distraction.
  16. Well, I suggested that there was no reason the gift giver had to purchase through Amazon if she didn't want to. I never got a reply, so I don't know how this is going to go. I've not quite justified signing up for Prime yet. Maybe when I go through 2013 receipts I'll add up the postage I paid to see if it exceeds $80. My sister uses Prime and has offered to order for me if I am ever in a hurry. Thing is, I usually have enough time to go with the super saver shipping.
  17. Where were you last December 20/21st? I think we had over 18 inches of snow over the course of 2 days and we didn't have school 2 consecutive days. Perhaps Milwaukee didn't get hit with that storm like Madison did. I believe Madison got that one worse than Milwaukee. The really awesome part was when the Madison buses didn't run on Friday but we had to get to UW-Madison anyway. We walked, not uphill both ways and not barefoot, but we did walk through a lot of snow.
  18. I get your point - and I don't want to unduly prolong this tangent in a weather thread - but a few seconds of impairment or distraction (for any reason) is all that's needed to cause a problem.
  19. I probably could have added a winky or blue text to my "trap game" comment above. Remember, I was a student during the dark days of Steve Yoder and Don Morton, when any good football or basketball news was considered a mirage never to last.
  20. UWM is going to be a major trap game, isn't it?
  21. You could slice it like a tic-tac-toe board. The resulting nine pieces wouldn't be equal in size, but there would be nine.
  22. The feeling-jerked-around holiday season continues. Among my extended family (seven adults and four kids), we've increasingly come to share Amazon wish lists with each other. My brother's and sister's households are so perpetually uberbusy that it's a way to save them time, and for the kids whose preferences Aunt Hawing, Uncle S.O. and Grandma don't always know (because we don't stay constantly on top of all kid gift trends), we have kind of a road map. So tonight I get a message from the person who has my name asking if I've got any ideas besides the ones on Amazon. She wants to do her shopping next weekend and be done with it. I know that exactly what my gift turns out to be is small potatoes in the grand scheme, but I am not sure what these folks want from us anymore. When did Amazon cease to be the handiest thing for these super busy people? I created the wish list at their request!
  23. If you do, wear a Brewers jersey. If you do both these things, report back to see how the Brewers gear is received at Busch. Sgtcluels and ewizabeff took the tour a few years ago and if I recall correctly got mini-lectured on how untucking was bad. If that happened to me I'd have made sure my displeasure was known.
  24. At the hawing Thanksgiving last week, I learned that my sister's family is unavailable for December 25 because of a rare visit from her distant in-laws. I get that things like that happen, but the discussion of it gave me the distinct impression that the other households already knew about it. I think sometimes the extended fams (both mine and the SO's) assume - maybe even subconsciously - that we are endlessly flexible because we don't have kids. However, that doesn't automatically follow. The Tuesday-Wednesday placement of this year's Eve and Day holidays, plus UW-Madison exams ending on the 21st, means that I will have no student help at work on the 21st, 23rd, and 26th - and now I have to ask my non-student colleagues to help on the 26th if I want to see my family. (The surrounding weekends are not an option for them for other in-law reasons.) I'm keenly aware that these are first world problems, but striking the annual balance between the expectations of each extended family does take away from the general fun of the holiday season. Some years I feel more jerked around than others, and this is shaping up to be one of those years.
  25. Link to Cardinals tweet I swear I'm not looking to start a fight, and I know in my head why it doesn't make sense, but the fangirl in me WANTS JOHN BACK.
