  1. I mean... Choi is a .796 career OPS first baseman. You don't get a lot in trade for guys like that. He is what he is. Probably shouldn't be starting and is an ok platoon-ish, PH/DH guy. He looks desireable because our 1B situation was Justin Smoak and blah. We had Thames and Aguilar at the time and nobody was going to give us a bunch for him. I'll honestly be surprised if he plays 3 more years.
  2. I kind of am enjoying the fact that Jose altuve getting the yips is torpedoing the Astros chances of getting back to the world series. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy...
  3. I had it on while I was doing other things. I was marginally paying attention to it, which made it bearable. But oof.
  4. Jimmy Butler played 47 minutes in an elimination game last night. Buds playoff coaching style (which I have defended in the past) just isn't gonna do it.
  5. Thanks for doing this work. It definitely does show that the game is changing, and a lot, in a relatively short amount of time.
  6. I don't like sentiment in sports too much... But I'd pay Braun 6-7 mil to give him the opportunity to dh for a year and have a proper send-off season with the fans. He's been a huge part of Milwaukee for 15 years and sending him out after this season seems anti climatic.
  7. It feels like a lot of fans somewhat agree that the game is not aesthetically pleasing at this point. I've said that myself a couple times in the last few years with the rapidly rising strikeout rate. High k rates, shifts that definitely make it more difficult for pull hitters and so on. At the same time, I think a lot of fans also agree that a lot of drastic changes at one time would probably be a bad idea. We don't want to see rules where only two infielders are allowed on one side of the infield. we don't want to see the mound lowered and we don't want to see the moans moved back. We don't want to see five balls or three balls or four strikes. a lot of people thought it was blasphemy when they introduced the three batter rule for relief pitchers. Baseball changes a lot over time. I think right now it has just changed in a way that has made the game fundamentally unaesthetically pleasing to watch for a good number of people. I don't think there's a quick or easy fix for that. I do think that of baseball keeps trending this way and we see players striking out 12 or 13 times per 9 innings in the next 10 years that we will probably see some other kind of big or radical change
  8. Why extend the ball here and risk a turnover? I get that instinct says fight for every inch, but at this point burning clock is just as important as getting the score.
  9. Yeah, I went through a wide range of emotions on that play. When I saw Lazard had the coverage beat, I was like "ohhhh man", and then when he stumbled I was like 'awww, no...." and then when he caught it anyways I was like "OMG! He still CAUGHT THAT!?!?"
  10. I mean on one hand the brewers and Astros are the (potential) first ever teams to make the playoffs with sub .500 records but this is also the first season where more than half the teams make the playoffs so....
  11. Too convenient? I might be lost here, but is that an accusation he was faking an injury? When you're in this deep, ya might as well double down....
  12. Injured guy trying to gut it out = "not ready for the spotlight" got it.
  13. I found it interesting that even with the short season and the expanded field, the American league had absolutely zero compelling races. The national league has all kinds of excitement going down to the wire and is going to have probably four teams that are essentially 500 teams. I would love to see the national league have a 28 or 29 win team sneak into the world series. I feel like that would be fantastic.
  14. Eh. I'm still not a big Pettine guy, I feel like this should be an upper echelon defense and I feel like we're getting less than the sum of the parts. But we'll see what happens, he obviously isn't going anywhere in 2020 and it would be good for everyone if they don't have a reason to move on from him in 2021. I'm not a huge fan of the guy either, but I absolutely hated Dom capers. Just hated him, I have no idea how he stuck around as long as he did. I'm pretty sure he had nudes of one of McCarthy's family members. All that aside, the new guy has been here one year and two games. I think we got to at least give him a chance. He had a pretty talented defense last year, at least it seems like he did. And they were reasonably average. they started out rough yesterday and then they played a good game the rest of the way. They played pretty good against Minnesota until garbage time. And then they played prevent and everybody got mad for them doing what every single other team in the NFL does. We can argue if that's what teams should do but that's what they do. Conventional wisdom still rules the day in the NFL. Neither Minnesota nor Detroit ever had the ball in the second half of either game with a chance to tie or take the lead. That's going to change the way you play defense and I don't really have a huge problem with it
  15. Are we still firing Pettine today or nah?
  16. We need a "Has anyone gained confidence in Stearns" thread. I actually admit I have to eat some crow on the Vogelbach move. I didn't like it at the time, I said more or less one random bad dude is just as likely as another to get hot at a random time, it felt very much like shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. I still think it feels random, I don't think Stearns had any kind of an inkling of an idea that chunk from the Goonies was going to get hot suddenly in September, but I guess you have to give him credit when its due. All that being said, if we keep the DH in the national league next year, I'll be happy to at least give the guy a chance to show that his first part of this season was the aberration. Maybe he's figured something out. I doubt he's a 300 hitter but we already know he's got power and the ability to draw walks. If Stearns truly has mined a nugget, I hope the DH sticks around and gives us a roster spot to give him some bats next year.
  17. The Cardinals have been scuffling just as much as the Brewers. Aside from Goldschmidt and Brad Miller (lol), they don't have anybody doing anything of note. The Cubs aren't getting any offense from Baez, Rizzo, or Bryant. The Brewers aren't the only team with struggling superstars.
  18. Why would you worry about that? If the two choices are (1) winning the World Series this year (as unlikely as that is), or (2) never winning the World Series in your lifetime (which in my case is about a 99% probability, which would you take? It’s not as if winning this year would preclude or make it less likely that they could win some other time. I started this season thinking that I wasn't very excited about baseball. Or sports. I can still live without sports. I'll always be able to live without anything non-essential. Sports are entertainment. But..... if the Brewers were to romp through the playoffs and hoist the crown, I'd be excited as any other championship. Like you said, if the choice is this or nothing, let's take it!
  19. Chili Davis. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
