  1. Irregardless of what happens tonight, there's no rational argument for the Badgers to jump Oklahoma. Oklahoma has one loss, to a decent K-State team. Badgers lost to Illinois, got curb stomped by Ohio state, and struggled to beat a really bad Northwestern team. If the Badgers were a 1-loss team, that Northwestern game (and Purdue game) wouldn't matter, but when you're a 2 loss team, you better have a super super impressive resume to get picked over a 1 loss power 5 conference champ, and the Badgers don't have that. They have some nice wins. Michigan, Minny, and Iowa, but that's not enough to make up for losing to Illinois and struggling with Northwestern.
  2. Honestly, that could be the biggest impediment to him repeating as MVP. If you look at the per 36 numbers, he's almost scoring as proficiently as Harden. The Bucks just don't need Giannis to be on the court 37 mpg, as they're using his minutes efficiently and smartly.
  3. Wisco vs kentucky... Oof. Nobody needs to see that.
  4. The Bucks are at a laughably absurd 13.6 ppg differential. I don't think that's sustainable, but it's pretty unbelievable at just a shade more than a quarter of the way through the season now. The 95/96 Bulls (yeah....the 72 win Bulls) had a 12.3 ppg differential. The record is 12.8, by the GS Warriors.
  5. But their 3 pt defense sucks...I guess?? Seriously though - this is pretty damn impressive, even if it is just an early December regular season game. I'm not even sure their 3pt defense "sucks". My consistent take since Bud has been coach is that watching their 3pt defense is unbearable and often I follow on gamecast even when I can get the game here in Utah. I can't watch them chase out after the shooter after the ball's left their hands possession after possession. Aggravating. I predicted last season that the season would end to a hot 3pt shooter and that was pretty much the case with that schmuck VanVleet. Sadly, if they can't shore it up when it matters, I feel 2020 will end the same way if an opponent is willing to jack em up. :shrugs: It sucks because a team getting hot on 3s because you basically let them ends up winning despite how much better Milwaukee is on paper. Bucks lost that series because Toronto did everything in their power to shut down Giannis in the paint and their shooters didn't compensate. Bucks shot 31% from three and didn't break 100 points either of the last 2 games, and basically played pretty terrible offense as Giannis tried again and again to run into walls of defenders. Toronto shot well. Van Vleet shot great, but he averaged 9.7 ppg. That could have been overcome if the Bucks offense performed up to standards.
  6. Dangit. Was hoping we'd bring him back for 2/12 or something.
  7. Is a .800 OPS really going to be that flashy at DH? It’s not even impressive at 1B as it let alone someone who doesn’t even play the field period. The AL cumulatively put up a .786 OPS from the DH position last year, so an .800 OPS wouldn't be terrible... Not going to look up the NL stats as NL teams didn't put DH's on their rosters. AL is a pretty good measuring stick, as those teams specifically sign DH's to play full time.
  8. Blake Snell not happy with this trade.... "We gave up Pham for Renfro and a damn slapdick prospect?" https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28237328/rays-blake-snell-strongly-reacts-tommy-pham-trade-twitch
  9. Good. Glad he cant be brought back. He had a couple neat moments and big defensive plays, but he is what he is. A crappy stopgap he was never going to be better than what he was.
  10. Miguel Cabrera. Joey Votto. Ryan Braun. 20 of the top 40 highest paid players by aav in 2018 were less than two WAR. That is not bang for your buck. Paying guys like rendon and stras is a net loss. It always looks good up front, but the last 3-4 years never work out.
  11. This article is from last off-season. It's a really long read, but it's also a really interesting read. Basically, unless your team is absolutely tanking, they're going to make money by being cheap. Baseball teams don't make more money by spending huge money on free agents. Big money free agents don't bring back an equal value in jerseys and tickets. Winning more games doesn't turn in to huge profits. I believe that most of the owners want to win, but at the end of the day, they're all rich, and rich people are rich because they're generally business savvy and invest wisely. They're in this to make money, not lose money. We can talk all day about how we deserve a winner or this or that, but people who run businesses are always, always, always going to make decisions that are best for the bottom line. "And the numbers were eye-opening: Just about every baseball free agent was being paid more than he was actually worth to his team in terms of the added revenue it would see thanks to extra wins. According to one researcher, Graham Tyler—then an undergrad econ student at Brown, and until recently the Rays’ director of player operations thanks in part to his pioneering studies in this area—teams only earn an extra $1.5 million from each additional win, meaning that a truly rational profit-maximizing owner (more on this in a minute) wouldn’t spend more than $6.75 million a year on a Machado-level talent." https://deadspin.com/baseball-doesnt-need-collusion-to-turn-off-the-hot-stov-1831644811
  12. Spending money on Stras or Rendon or some other big name assures nothing. Mark A has a smart GM who has put the Brewers in the playoffs the last 2 years while finding value deals and making some savvy trades. Spending money on big name free agents and increasing the payroll to an unsustainable level only assures that the money isn't available to be used for other purposes. It does not guarantee a playoff berth, increased ticket sales, increased jersey sales, or anything else. That is unrealistic speculation. The Phillies spent 300 million on Bryce Harper and he's a 4 WAR guy and they missed the playoffs. The Padres spent 300 million on Manny Machado and he was a 3 WAR guy, and they missed the playoffs. That doesn't mean spending huge can't and won't ever work out, but it usually won't work out well for a market like Milwaukee or KC or Pitt.
  13. Yup. This is a super deep team with a mega star at the top. Pretty dang fun.
  14. Very good, very consistent on base skills. Power spiked a bit last year, like many, but even if that's a bit of a false number due to a juiced ball or whatever he still looks like a 12 to 15 home run guy with really good on-base skills. Really like this get.
  15. Pistons are trash, lol. After another dismantling tonight, took a peek at the Bucks stats. Only Giannis is averaging more than 28 mpg, and he's only averaging 32 mpg. All these blowouts are making it easy to manage minutes and get the young guys a lot of time on the floor.
  16. Castellanos has been over 2.0 War 2 times in his career. The question you have to ask yourself is how much did that park in Detroit suppress his offense? He doesn't walk a lot, and he doesn't hit for a super high average. The only time he's hit for a LOT of power is the last bit of last year, in Wrigley. Was he super hot, or was it getting out of Detroit? How much/how long do the Brewers want to gamble that that was an aberration, or the real deal? I don't think Castellanos is a .790 OPS guy, and the flip side is I SURE don't think he's a 1.000 OPS guy. I don't want to be tied to an .850 OPS corner outfielder who's a bad fielder for 6 years, well into his 30's for 15 mil aav+. Those guys aren't that hard to come by.
  17. Nice message and I will miss him in a Brewers uniform. He had two great years and last year was frustrating for him and us. Good luck to Travis and I hope he finds his way back to being a very productive player again but unfortunately it won't be in Milwaukee anymore. I thought it was a little salty mentioning whoever takes him next will get a “HIGHLY motivated and determined player”. That's not how I took it. Maybe....... but dude hit .160 last year. He's got to be motivated to play better. If he hits .160 again he's out of the league. That's motivational.
  18. Long off-season, and we all have different ideas how we want things to go. We don't need to re-post certain posts in every thread, and we don't need to tell other posters repeatedly that their ideas are wrong. Let's have some civil discussion about stuff and stay on topic.
  19. it's entirely possible that the front office has decided that this off-season with a weak free agent class is not a good season to be spenders. It may not mean punting on the season, but it could mean a season of seeing some guys who are place holders for one year. If you spend just to spend this year or trade for guys just to get them to make ABSOLUTELY SURE you can chase 86 wins this year, there's a chance that they could be limiting their options to go after a better crop of free agents next year. I'm not saying that's what's going on, but this is not a great free agent class, and spending just to spend isn't always the best strategy.
  20. If Baylor beats Oklahoma, I just don't see the 2-loss Badgers jumping them unless they absolutely dump Ohio State in the trash, and even then, I don't really see it. Same with Clemson. 1 loss CLemson >> 2 loss Wisconsin. I get that Clemson and Baylor don't have a bunch of top 25 wins, but neither do either of them have a loss like the Illinois game on their resumes, and at the end of the day, the Badgers are a 2 loss team, and they lost to Illinois. If we were talking about them maybe jumping another 2 loss team, I could see it, but I absolutely don't see them jumping 4 spots, and jumping multiple 1 loss teams.
  21. There is probably about a .1% chance of that happening, but if the Badgers do get an unlikely blowout on Saturday, it would probably be very difficult to keep them out of the playoff. They are eight right now. Even if they blow Ohio State out. Oklahoma and Baylor play each other only one of them can lose. They're not going to jump Oklahoma, who I think is going to win that game. LSU will beat Georgia. For the sake of argument let's assume Oregon beats Utah. Then let's assume Clemson by some miracle loses to Virginia. A 2-loss Badger team, even with a blowout win over Ohio State still isn't going to jump a one-loss Clemson. Even if the Badgers beat Ohio State 50 to 7, and everything else falls exactly how we needed it to happen, last Saturday was where the things that we needed to happen went south.
  22. While not enough things went right last saturday to realistically get the badgers back into the cfp discussion, jumping to 8 keeps them alive for the rose if they hang close with the buckeyes I think.
  23. Players resigning with a team after being non-tendered is not uncommon. It's usually for guys who were injured and barely played for a couple years who would have gotten a raise simply due to service time or bottom of the 40 man guys. I think there's a decent chance Nelson resigns for less. The Brewers treated him very well. As someone else said, Nelson was basically paid 8 mil the last 2 years to rehab and pitch a few innings. Claudio is pointless because of the new 3 batter rule. He should never face righties. Saladino is the literal definition of "just a guy". Guerra is on the wrong side of 30 and pitched a LOT last year. Wouldnt be surprised if he declines quite a bit this year. Shaw is the big question mark. Brewers spending Arbys money on a guy who hit .157 and 7 dingers isnt a great idea. (Imo)
  24. I think we're finding out that they're a really good team. I mean, they already were, but this is a really, really good team.
  25. I finally saw Far From Home, and the movie (IMO) runs into a growing problem in the MCU. They have a global threat, with supposed elementals that threaten the earth and Peter Parker says "where is Thor? Where is Captain Marvel?", and the answer is "they're busy". Just like Avengers, when Captain Marvel would have shortened the run time by making short work of all the baddies, they story-lined her out by saying "she's busy doing stuff somewhere else". The solution to this is don't have spider man face global-level threats, so he's not asking for help from Captain Marvel or Thor. That's why Homecoming worked so well. He was facing a threat level appropriate to his own capabilities. Some guy with a flying suit who was trying to steal some weapons. As more and more characters enter the MCU (x-men, F4, etc, etc) they're going to have to stop using "they're busy" when a weaker character like Ant-Man or someone says "I need help from a stronger character." MCU writing needs to make sure the threat level on these individual movies is appropriate for the characters they feature.
