  1. AL - Baltimore Detroit Oakland Toronto/Los Angeles Washington St. Louis Los Angeles Milwaukee/San Francisco I don't like predicting short series. Too much can happen, and go right or wrong in a 1, 5 or 7 game set. Bats get hot or cold at the right or wrong time, and even bad hitting teams get hot, or good hitting teams go cold, and predictions are pretty meaningless for a short series. But those are the teams I think make the playoffs. My guess is the Cards win the central with the pitching they now have, but the Brewers hang on for one of the 2 W/C spots.
  2. 51 of 128 Walk difference is purely due to the DH vs P batting I don't think that's entirely true. Lucroy leads the Brewers in walks, and only 2 guys on the Brewers have taken at least 30 walks. 6 Oakland batters have taken at least 30 walks. That's not something you can say is just because of the DH. The DH is only one spot in the order. Segura, Gennett, Davis, and Ramirez all have really terrible walk rates. Braun and Gomez have pretty bad walk rates themselves. This is just a team that doesn't walk much, period.
  3. Who has no hitting? The A's? They lead the AL in runs scored. That is true, because they draw a ton of walks and have a high on base %. Batting average wise they only have 3 starters hitting over .260. That is what I meant with no hitting. They have 399 walks this year where as the Brewers have 271. I know about 7 people who still use batting average as a useful metric. The A's lead the AL in runs. Runs >>>>>>>>>>> Batting average. You're using 'hitting' as a catch-all phrase for I don't know what. Batting average? I don't mean to be snide, but who cares? The A's score runs, lots of them, and lead the majors in run differential. They got rid of a guy who had a terrible OBP, and added a top of the rotation starter. Whether the cost and value are there, it's debatable, but saying "the A's have no hitting" with a metric like batting average being used as the measuring stick.....certainly doesn't make the trade any worse.
  4. 'zactly. As I stated in the thread on the Major league forum, Cespedes has carried an OBP right around .300 for the better part of the last 2 years (.294 last year). He's glam because he hits homeruns and has a big arm and has big RBI numbers because of where he hits in the order.
  5. Is this even really a good move for this year? Trading a key component in your lineup? Seems a bit like a wash competitively. I really respect Billy Bean as a GM. Even though he is yet to get to or win the World Series, what he does with that payroll is amazing. However, I'm scratching my head at this one. Personally - I think it is a bad idea. They have absolutely no hitting on that team. And it just got worse. I don't see how this ends as a net positive for them. Who has no hitting? The A's? They lead the AL in runs scored.
  6. Cespedes isn't really an "A's" type of guy. He had a .294 OBP last year, and a .303 OBP this year. Yeah, he gets RBI's, but that's where he hits in the order. I'm honestly not surprised that Beane chose to move him.
  7. Trade 1 1/2 years of Gallardo for prospects and trade prospects to get 1 1/2 years of Price. Point 1 is that Melvin and co just don't make moves like this when they're competing. I suppose the possibility is that they always COULD do something outside the box.....but they won't. Secondly, why? He's pitching well, and he will be needed down the stretch and possibly/probably in the playoffs.
  8. There's absolutely nothing in the way Melvin or MA have operated that would indicate they will be sellers when they are in a playoff race. There is 0% chance they'll be listening to trade offers for Yo right now. I was thinking more so instead of including Nelson, it's Gallardo who gets us lets say Price. We get an ace, we keep our one pitcher that is young(er) and who we control for awhile. I love Gallardo, wish he was a Brewer for life but it's not realistic I don't think. Well, then let me say this. Why would the Rays want Gallardo? That's completely outside THEIR m.o.
  9. There's absolutely nothing in the way Melvin or MA have operated that would indicate they will be sellers when they are in a playoff race. There is 0% chance they'll be listening to trade offers for Yo right now.
  10. oh......>NOW we intentionally walk a guy with the open base. NOW. Now that the game is effectively out of reach. Good freaking call Ron. Idiot.
  11. Reynolds has been amazeballs defensively the last few nights.
  12. For all we know all Doug is doing nothing more than 'kicking the tires', with no real resolve to actually do anything unless someone takes a ridiculous low ball offer (which isn't going to happen)
  13. If Ben Zobrist was a Brewer, that wouldn't have happened
  14. In other words, just giving Gomez the day off would have been just as useful.
  15. Oh for sure, he bunted it too hard.....but on grass, that's a hit.
  16. It looked like Reynolds was bunting for a hit there.. which leads me to believe it wasn't called from the dugout. I could be wrong, tho. Hard to bunt for a hit on that astroturf that looks like it was bought at Menards.
  17. This is bad. When you're excited about a Mark Reynolds sac bunt and a sac fly.......this is bad.
  18. Pretty much this. Melvin/MA don't go into a season expecting not to contend. In 2012 when the Brewers traded Greinke, we were 45-54, 14 games out, and 10 out of the wild card. Nobody saw us climbing back into the wild card race at that point. Melvin's MO has NEVER been to trade MLB chips when he thinks he's in a race, or has a chance to compete. With the team he'll have going into 2015, I think it's safe to say there's a 0% chance he'd have a reason to believe he'd want to trade Price for minor league pieces.
