  1. Just took out the dog, there's a noticeable 'crunch' to the grass in the yard tonight. Yup. Frost.
  2. I predict that DM gets 2 pitchers, one that will be a letdown, and Suppan will, in fact, be in the opening day rotation. Just preparing everyone for the letdown! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif
  3. Using a guy who was one of the worst offensive performers in the leauge isn't exactly a glowing endorsement for the ability to make productive outs.
  4. He's been with the organization for 12 years. You'd think a personality conflict would have flared up before now. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your point, I'm just sayin'.........
  5. Yeah, pretty pathetic, really. I don't expect every manager and GM to swear by the bible of sabre, but I do expect that they should at least be aware of statistics before they say stupid stuff that can be proven to be patently false within 45 seconds of internet browsing.
  6. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4534620 The excerpts from the article that just make me chuckle...... The Tampa Bay Rayshave fired hitting coach Steve Henderson following a season in which the Rays set team records for runs, home runs, on-base percentage and walks......... followed shortly thereafter by...... Although the Rays improved statistically in a number of offensive categories, situational hitting woes have been a concern for both Friedman and manager Joe Maddon. Yes, fire your hitting coach for 'situational hitting woes'. That makes a lot of sense. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  7. I was posting on another forum populated by both Brewers and Cardinals fans yesterday in the 10th inning when LaRussa walked Prince intentionally in a game that meant absolutely nothing to either team. Even most of the Cardinals fans thought this was an incredibly 'bush' move by LaRussa, and most said in their opinion, was done mostly out of spite to keep Prince from tying Pujols for the homerun lead, or giving him a chance to reach .300. I don't know about the 2nd part, I hardly doubt LaRussa keeps that close tabs on opposing players BA during game time, but I'm sure he was well aware of the HR situation. What a jag.
  8. I'd vote 'no' for a salary cap. But when the playoffs look like this...... New York LA X 2 Philadelphia Boston St Louis Denver Detroit/Minny It's not really indicative of competitive balance. Who's the big spenders missing out? Cubs (of course), Mets (how could they have possibly won with all the injuries), Baltimore (so poorly run it's not even funny), and who else? Seattle? White Sox? Having money to spend doesn't guarantee the playoffs. Not having it guarantees there's only going to be a slim chance for you to begin with.
  9. I think that's exactly right. It's the first day of the off-season, and the closers spot is taken care of for 2010. That's one thing Melvin won't have to even think about going forward for another year. I'm not an eternal optimist, but I also am not nearly as pessimistic as some about the chances to compete in 2010. We lost Rickie for the year. Hardy and Hart underperformed and were replaced or injured. We had the worst hitting starting catcher in the league. Gallardo was inconsistent, and walked too many guys. Bush and Suppan were hurt, and replaced by AAAA scrubs who weren't any better. Villy, McClung and others in the bullpen performed below expectations. Manny Parra regressed badly and had a terrible year. And they went 80-82. 5 lucky or bad bounces away from 85-77. It's not hard to see 5 wins worth of improvement simply from most of the guys playing at 90% of their expected production level. Shore up the rotation with a #3 type guy in a trade. Escobar putting up a .715 OPS next year improves on what JJ did offensively. Rickie Weeks should be healthy. Gallardo has a year of experience under his belt. Manny Parra pitched better in the 2nd half. I see no reason why a good closer shouldn't be a priority for a team in this position.
  10. It's in the article. Entering this season, he had the option of purchasing Cobra health coverage that would run him somewhere around $20,000, but would continue the high-level care. Fasano, whose family lives modestly inMinooka, Ill., says he and Kerri struggled with the decision, before deciding not to go that route. " I'm not one to judge, but I do wonder, what is "modest", by Fasano's standards? What he's made in the last 3 years is more than what most families that take in about 50K per year will make in 20 years. My family takes in a shade less than that. I'd call our style of living 'modest', and we have a house, a new car, we can go out to eat once a week, and maybe take a vacation once a year. I'm not judging, I'm only questioning the definition of modest in the context. The only thing I can think is that he hasn't been wise with his financial decisions with the money he's already made over his career, but I don't know, that's just a guess.
  11. That's what I was thinking. "Well, we expected this guy to completely suck, but he was actually league average, so he gets an A-!" Not that that was said, but that's the vibe that comes off the list. Let me add some grades while I'm at it. Ken Macha -- D-. Would have been a D+, but he had Corey Patterson bat leadoff. I don't care that it was only for one game, that's not excuseable. Bill Castro/Chris Bosio. - D. Coaching is very hard to measure. It's an intangible that doesn't come through in a way that it's statistically measureable, but I think it's safe to say that Maddux was missed this year.
  12. When you look at guys with Prince's body shape, (his dad, David Ortiz, Mo Vaughn, etc) they all generally really start to show very indicative signs of decline around age 32 or so. There's nothing scientific about this, it's just a general observation. With that being said, given Fielder's age, and his improved defensive play, I think if the club really was inclined to keep him, a 6 year contract offer (130 million? 140?) would put him right at the age where the big bodied players start to go downhill quickly when the contract expires. Is he worth that much? I'd probably be inclined to say yes. He's just about a dead on average fielding first baseman (per fangraphs) and his bat is clearly in the elite class. If you believe he can continue to play average defense and put up .950 - 1.000 OPS seasons, then I'd have to consider it, at the very least. Fangraphs has his value at 27 mil. I put very little stock into win value, as baseball's economic structure and pay scale makes those numbers really hard to accurately judge.
  13. I've read before that Melvin didn't think Rickie's running style was conducive to playing outfield. I'm glad this is finally getting put to rest.
  14. Apparently they haven't had time to indoctrinate Holliday as to what "classy" baseball is. He'll get it in time, I'm sure.
  15. I saw the thread title and thought maybe Milton Bradley had registered to post here!
  16. PLEASE no on bringing Coop back to Milwaukee. Who's next? Charlie Moore? Ben Oglivie? Jamie Easterly? Coop seems like an 'old school' manager to me, which this team doesn't need. They need a manager who values tangibles rather than stuff like 'grit and determination'. Coop was a fave when he was here, but the 1982 train needs to leave the station.
  17. One thing that needs to be mentioned, and I don't know if it's true or not, because it's coming from Milton Bradley, is that on a handful of occassions he's heard 'racial slurs' directed towards him from the bleachers. I don't need to use my imagination to know what was said. He said he's never gotten that treatment anywhere else in the league, and frankly, if true, I'm not surprised. I've been to 2 games in Wrigley recently and the fans there are NOT the 'best fans in the world'. And as far as heckling, that's all fine and well. Racial slurs? One time is once too many. Again, IF that's true, which we must consider the source.
  18. Melvin's stated this year that he doesn't like Rickie in center because he's a power runner, not a 'loper' or 'strider'. I don't know what that really has to do with anything, but Melvin's on record for not really considering Rickie an option in CF.
  19. The team is, for all intent, a .500 team. Rickie has missed most of the season, JJ has been putrid, (although Counsell and McGehee make up for a lot of that). Hart has been sub-par, Bill Hall was a vortex of outs in his 200-ish plate appearances. This team, as it was constructed, could have contended if people did nothing more than stay healthy and perform even within 90% of their expectations. Gutting the team and saying they're not close to contending is just not true. If you sort out 2B, and plan on Parra bouncing back to form, along with Bush, there's no reason to jettison Cameron. If you take the field on opening day with the expectation of being an 85 win team, you're 5 lucky bounces from being a 90 win playoff team. The Tigers have allowed more runs than they've scored, and due I'm sure to a little bit of luck here and there, coupled with being in a mediocre division, they're counting days til they clinch.
  20. There has to be someone worth signing. This year's FA crop is pretty weak at best.
  21. Cody = Burns. Narveson = Burns. Cody or Narveson or Burns <<< Looper. As mediocre as Looper is, swapping him out with a 4A starter to save a few million dollars isn't going to help, it's going to hurt.
  22. If we're not bringing Looper back, who's taking his starts? Villy? McClung? Burns? There's no one ready to take 30 starts. If we're not bringing back Looper, there needs to be some realistic ideas for how those innings will be filled. 6.5 million for a #4 type with a 5-ish E.R.A. isn't really overpaying.
  23. ROY isn't based on potential. J.A. Happ is clearly a better long term prospect than McGehee, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's having a better season this year.
  24. That's what I don't get. Why are we "kicking the tire" on this guy? He's got a more than large enough body of major league work to prove that, well, he sucks. And ok, I can deal with him replacing Cam at the end of a lost season. But as the quote someone posted above shows, if Macha is batting a guy leadoff who carries a career OBP below .300, there's one of 2 things going on. 1.) He doesn't 'get it'. He just doesn't understand that low OBP = bad, and high OBP = good. There's a reason Prince/Braun is the #1 RBI duo in the bigs, and that's because by and large, the guys that have been hitting 1-2 (aside from Hardy early in the season) carry good OBP. And if Macha DOES know that having a guy with a .290-ish OBP leading off is bad, and he hits him there anyways..... 2.) He doesn't care. Either one of these is grounds for dismissal. Sure, it might be reactionary, but at this point, I'm done with this guy. I want Bobby Valentine.
  25. ......and Patterson is starting and batting leadoff. A guy with a career OBP less than .300. Macha should be fired for utilizing him like this, and maybe this makes me ridiculous, but I'm not watching a game in which Patterson is inked into the starting lineup.
