  1. Yeah, I can't help but find it ironic that there's a Mac tv commercial sniping at Microsoft for money they spend on advertising. As an aside, those "Mojave" commercials are plain stupid.
  2. Having just got a new computer, I'll verify that Vista isn't THAT bad. Mac would be nice, but price is always an issue. The only problem I've had with Vista so far is a few driver issues for peripherals, but that's easily solved.
  3. Texting sucks. There are uses. My wife will occasionally text me something, knowing that I can read a text but may not be able to listen to a voicemail while I'm at work. My teenage daughter on the other hand, I'm not sure if she's aware you can TALK on a cell phone. I hate text speak, I hate AOL speak, and I hate people who text while they drive.
  4. A co-worker shared this story with me a few weeks back. She works in internet support where I work, and she had a customer call in and ask why the "credit card slot" on her computer wasn't working. Turns out she was putting her credit card in the floppy drive to shop on the internet.
  5. I had a lady at my workplace tell me that she was trying to use microsoft word on her home computer, and it was saying "your 90 day trial version has expired", and she thought it was a problem with her internet.
  6. Anybody who's not exposed to a technology or terminology won't know how to use it, not just old people.
  7. Yeah, those value numbers don't come close to what a "value" is this offseason. Player salaries (aside from the Yankees) are depressed to a pretty significant degree.
  8. When I worked in construction, this is the way I was. If it was in the 40's or even high 30's, I could work all day in a tee shirt and jeans. Now that I work inside I'm not necessarily wussified to the cold, but I don't have the tolerance to it that I used to.
  9. Janesville schools didn't announce a closing until this morning. I was strongly considering keeping my kids home anyways, as my daughter has about a 10 block walk home from the bus stop (as well as waiting for the bus outside after school) 10 blocks = 20 minutes, and that's frostbite for sure in these temps.
  10. I searched several sites, and most of them basically agree with each other on the effects at certain levels. I used Brown's because it was in an easy to present format. As for questioning the control, BAC doesn't need to take size into accout. A 300 pound man with a BAC of .08 has far more alcohol in his system than a 120 college kid with a .08 BAC, so the 300 pound trucker has the same percentage of alcohol-to-blood ratio, it just takes him more drinks to get there. A 200 pound man will take, on average, 4 drinks in an hour to get to .09, whereas a 115 pound woman will get there in 2 1/2 drinks or less.
  11. From the Brown University Website 0.02 - 0.03 Legal definition of intoxication in R.I. for people under 21 years of age. Few obvious effects; slight intensification of mood. 0.05 - 0.06 Feeling of warmth, relaxation, mild sedation; exaggeration of emotion and behavior; slight decrease in reaction time and in fine-muscle coordination; impaired judgment about continued drinking. 0.07 - 0.09 More noticeable speech impairment and disturbance of balance; impaired motor coordination, hearing and vision; feeling of elation or depression; increased confidence; may not recognize impairment.
  12. While it may be extreme ( I agree), I also think a young child growing up with the name Adolf Hitler is going to have a heckuva time in social interaction. One could certainly argue that such a name will very likely cause this young boy undue emotional distress in interaction with his peers.
  13. A person who gets 2 hours of sleep is impaired compared to them getting 8 hours of sleep. A person who eats, or talks on a cell phone while driving is impaired as well. A 25 year old has one drink, are they more impaired than a totally sober 70 year old? What I am getting at, is the .08 drivers aren't the problem. The .15's, the .20's, the .25's are the problem. The repeat drunk drivers are always up in that range. The fatalities almost always happen in that range. Is a .08 driver more impaired than a tired driver? Maybe, but there's no test to measure for tiredness right now. The way I see it, everyone knows the legal limit is .08. One may agree with it or disagree, that's not the point. That's the law. Whether you agree with it or not, there's consequences to breaking it. As of yet, the gov't has not made it illegal for 70 year olds to drive. My major problem is that there's people who want to find ways around it once there's a consequence to pay. I've personally seen too many lives ruined by drunk driving to feel an ounce of compassion for those who choose to get behind the wheel after having either a few, or a few too many. Driving impaired, regardless of how you got there, is dead wrong. Tired, drunk, stoned, whatever. So far, there's no reliable highway test for driving tired, so we do the best we can. And no, I'm not a prude. I do drink. I just choose to not put myself or others in harms way by getting behind the wheel when I do.
  14. I think most of the players are aware and accepting of the fact that Yankee Economics is now so far out of whack with the rest of baseball that they can't base what they think they should get from Team X based on what a similar player got from the Yankees.
  15. Some of the pre-1900 stats just aren't compatible with modern records. There was one year where it took 9 balls to draw a walk. One year where any extra base (going from first to third on a single for example) was considered and recorded as a "stolen base". At one point any ball that struck anywhere in fair territory was fair. There were batters that perfected the ability to stand in the very front of the batter's box and chop a ball down and away, so it would hit in fair territory and then bounce towards where the dugouts would be, which was basically an indefensible hit. At the very early stages of the game, it was considered "unsporting" to hit a ball over the outfield fence, and a homerun was actually frowned upon. There was one or 2 seasons, don't remember, but walks were counted as both a walk and a hit. And then there's the pitching records (600 IP! in a season) which obviously can't be touched. 2 man rotations, coupled with some seasons where throwing overhand was outlawed (not to mention most people didn't throw arm destroying pitches like curves or sliders), and batters being able to call for a "high" strike or a "low" strike. There's so much more, but there's so many differences between then and now that it's a completely different game, and if nothing else, the records could and should be broken down even further by era, as home run hitting didn't really become prevalane until after 1920 (aside from Babe Ruth) For what it's worth, in 1894, the league batting average was .309, and the league averaged 7.36 runs scored per team per game. Philadelphia's team batting average was .349.
  16. Yeah, I'm sorry, but the "I didn't vote for the obvious Hall of Famer because no one should get 100%" voters should be stripped of priviledge. Either someone deserved in, or they did not. The way this whole thing is done is a complete crock of horse poo, and it becomes less and less meaningful the more of the nonsense these writers spew as justification for and against why they voted.
  17. The more I look at Rice's numbers, the more I don't like them as a HOFer. He was "dominant" for maybe 4 years in his career. (77-79 and 83), and above average for most of the rest. He didn't hit any of the milestone counting numbers. (3,000 hits, 1500 RBI, 500 homers). I'm one of those that thinks the standards are *too* high sometimes, but in this case I think the voters lowered the standard a tad too much.
  18. 23% for Rock Raines? The only thing I can think of is that he was overlooked because he's a very similar player to Ricky, and was overshadowed by him for his entire career. Raines is very deserving, and it's a shame. Dawson.......meh. Really not impressive with an .805 career OPS for a corner outfielder. Nice? Sure, but this is the Hall of Fame, not the hall of "somewhat decent, with a few standout seasons" Raines had a superior OPS, a FAR superior OBP, played better defense, and stole a ton more bases. He walked 400 times more than he struckout, and was basically just a superior player to Dawson. The fact that Dawson got 3 times as many votes as Raines shows what a joke HOF voting is. And if that wasn't enough, Jim DeShaies (sp?) got a vote the year he became eligible, if that tells you anything.
  19. If the government tried to keep an asteroid hit a secret, independent astronomers would put the news out anyways. There's too many people with too much knowledge for something that huge to remain a secret. There's already a "near miss" projected in 2029, as there's an extinction level asteroid that is supposed to come within the moons orbit of Earth. Now, 200,000 miles from the planet sounds like a huge distance, but celestially speaking, that's too close for comfort. Now, that's just an asteroid, and I'm sure there's lots of other "disaster" type scenarios out there that could lead to the end of humanity that the gov't may be able to cover up, without considering the scope or context of whatever the event may be.
  20. When I got home from work last night, there was a good 5" on the driveway that needed to be cleared, and it was not snowing. When I got up this morning, there was ANOTHER 4" on the ground, and it's coming down pretty good again right now. Looks like the total (at least here in Rock County) could go over 10" for the storm, with local forecasts saying another 1-2" before it finally moves on through. I'm sure OWBC could explain, but it sure seems like right here along the border counties, we've consistently got the worst of it for the last 2 winters.
  21. Using ab x OBP x SLG, and given 5800 ab's you come up with 937 runs.

  23. AB X OBP X SLG % is about 97% accurate for how many runs a player (or team) creates. There's better and more accurate forumulas, but that's a good one for quick and dirty math.
