  1. How much will switching leagues REALLY affect a closer? It's not like closers get to pitch against pitchers, they're always pinch hit for in late innings anyways.
  2. My idea is to make scratch off lottery cards with a filament that runs through it that will react with gas station countertops to give people that try to scratch them off while standing in front of other people about a 220V blast.
  3. There have been zero teams to make big moves yet. I'd say the A's acquiring Matt Holliday was a big move. And the Pirates got Jack WILSON!!! And I definately see the concern. I'd be LESS concerned if the Brewers weren't making moves. But they are, and they're filling the roster up with guys like Mike Lamb and Jorge Julio and Todd Coffey.
  4. From the north side of Janesville to Junction Road just off the beltline took me almost 2 hours this morning. Luckily I planned ahead, and left home an hour and 15 earlier than I normally do. The I-90 was moving at about 35-40 most of the way up. I know the snow is supposed to stop this afternoon, but I'm hoping work will just put us up in a hotel if we live out of town.
  5. My next door neighbor has a very puzzling problem going on with his vehicle, I'm hoping I can get a little insight here, probably not, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. 3 year old Chevy Colorado (JUST passed the warranty period, gotta love the GM warranty) and here's what' happening.... If he drives it for just a few miles at a time, everything runs fine. If he just goes to work and then comes home after work, no problems. If he's doing any kind of extended driving, the engine will kill or lug at random times. When he's going around a corner, letting off the gas, or any other reason that he doesn't have the gas pedal down, the engine just dies. Now, if he's coasting, he can throw it in neutral, and it starts right back up, and then he'll be fine for the next 2-3 minutes again. This only seems to happen when the engine is warmed up. He's replaced the battery, the battery cables, the fuel filter, and had a diagnostic run on the electrical system (twice) which revealed no problems. He's taken it to the dealership, and they can't find anything wrong. To me (and I am NOT a mechanic), it sounds like for whatever reason, the fuel just isn't getting through. He's used a fuel injector cleaner, and treats his gas on fill up. The truck only has 24K miles on it. Any ideas?
  6. I wish I could find career numbers for OPS+ against, but in lieu of that, Maddux's career ERA+ of 132 is clearly superior to Ryan's 111. I know there's a lot of noise in ERA, but given the body of work for each, I think the law of averages should tell a pretty good story over time.
  7. Every now and then I'll hear from all my friends and family that "this movie was awful", and I think "it can't be THAT bad" I didn't rent the Happening because I wanted to see it, I rented it because I didn't think it could be as bad as everyone said. It was *that* bad. I also rented Iron Man, which I loved. It seems the studios have really, really figured out the last 3-4 years how to do super hero movies *right* finally. Iron Man wasn't chock-a-blok full of action, but Robert Downey's Tony Stark is such a great character, he, rather than the action sequences, highlight the movie. Hellboy: the Golden Army was a nice capper to the movie night. The story was so-so, but the creature design and action sequences were outstanding. On deck for tonight is Get Smart, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Wanted.
  8. I think before people start dropping the 'lazy parents' line they need to actually have to have kids older than 2 and work a full time job and NOT occaisionally stop at McDonalds. My kids are teenagers. I have a full time job. A family member of mine is a manager of a McDonalds. And Obviously when I say "McDonalds is popular because of lazy parents" I really mean that "Every single person who eats at McDonalds is a lazy parent who doesn't want to cook for their kids."
  9. McDonalds is so popular because of lazy parents who don't want to have to cook for themselves or their kids, and it's cheap. Worst? Burger King makes me sick. Given that the "meat" is soaked in a grease bath until it's served, no surprise. Most fast food french fries are pretty much awful. If they're more than 3 minutes old, they're limp, soggy, and taste like cardboard. As an aside, I don't know why the McRib is so *gross*, it's no worse than the lips, cheeks, and other crap that they use to make hot dogs and bologna. I work with a gentleman who's wife works at Oscar Meyer, and needless to say, some of the stories simply aren't fit to tell here.
  10. Khalil Greene looks like Sean Penn.
  11. Smashing Pumpkins are on tour right now, I think, and consist of Corgan and maybe Chamberlin. Iha and D'arcy have left. Dont know if that is Smashing Pumpkins or not. Id say they, along with GnR are a good test case for bands that still have the frontman but are not really the same band In the case of the Pumpkins, Billy *is* the Pumpkins. He writes 95% of the music. All the lyrics. Records all the guitar and bass in the studio himself. Chamberlain lays down the drums, and when they go on the road the rest of the "band" comes with.
  12. I think what Ender is saying is that the team's *expected* talent level was higher than 63 wins. Certainly on paper several of their guys had seasons worse than what you'd expect. And it's all TGJ's fault!
  13. It's probably my post that stirred that pot. A band with only one original member isn't really that band anymore, in my opinion of course.. I think I used Steven Tyler without Aerosmith and Mick Jagger without the stones as my other examples. A band with just a new singer, as long as the singer wasn't the main song writer (music, not lyrics) is probably mostly the same band. A band with a new guitar player who writes a different style of riff, but still has the same basic feel, is the same band.
  14. Didn't buy it, but I have listened to it twice, and thought it sucked. Axl with a bunch of guys is not Guns N' Roses, much like Steven Tyler with an all new band would not be Aerosmith, or Mick Jagger with a bunch of new guys would not be the Rolling Stones. Just wait til the tour, err.........cancelled dates that they never manage to play (because of Axl).
  15. Link (fixed) I'm sure the stat guys will love this. According to some in the organization, things "spiraled out of control" because of the 1 game playoff loss to the Rockies in '07, and that was a contributing factor to this year's 99 loss team. Dusty Baker and Joe Morgan would probably agree.
  16. I don't know why the fact that this has happened exactly once ever in history keeps getting glossed over. The logistics of fan travel, not to mention losing home field advantage, and the ability of the home fans to get time off (and travel expenditures) to see the team they supported all season just isn't feasible. All to hopefully prevent an event from happening that may not occur again in the next 100 years anyways.
  17. South Park -- More of a political commentary than a cartoon anymore. Simpsons -- Just plain awful at this point. Family Guy -- Still have some decent ones, but I don't watch the new ones unless I have nothing else going on. I used to make sure I caught it. 24 -- I don't care if it's not *realistic*, it's friggin tv.........who cares? I loved this show for several seasons, It's just that it's getting to be more of the same season after season. Most reality TV shows. -- There's not very many that are all that creative anymore. Survivor sucks, and most of the "we all live in a house together and are sick of each other" shows........I just don't care for em. That being said, I do really like Mythbusters. Another guilty pleasure of mine is Destination Truth on Sci-Fi. You can tell almost right away that the host thinks all the crap they send him to find is complete bunk, and that's what makes it so funny.
  18. Anybody that still compares Lesnar to Kimbo Slice is just being ignorant. Is the guy an obnoxious jerk? Well yeah, but he can fight. It's going to take somebody better than anyone in the current UFC heavyweight division, which is honestly pretty weak right now, to beat Lesnar. That being said, in MMA, anyone on any given night can get a lucky knockout or submission on anyone else, but Lesnar defends well. Did give Randy his back in Round 1, but he's so much stronger than Randy, he was able to just pull him off. I'd love to see him get 3-4 more fights worth of experience under his belt (and maybe a little humility) and then see him fight Fedor. Fedor would most likely win, but I think it would be entertaining as heck.
  19. One can certainly argue the fact that Lesnar didn't earn this fight (yet), but that was a heck of a victory. I hope Nogueira beats Mir, just for the sake of seeing him and Lesnar square up. I know 2nd hand info doesn't carry a lot of weight around here, and I understand that. I do happen to know pretty well one of the fighters that Lesnar trains with, and speak on a regular basis. All I can say from what I've been told and seen is that despite the obnoxiousness, Lesnar takes this extremely seriously, and puts a ton of work into being the best at what he does. It won't surprise me to see him go on a Liddell like run, unless Dana White somehow convinces Fedor to come to the UFC.
  20. I think Lesnar wins this one. He knows he's stronger than Couture, and about the only way Randy can win is to submit him. Lesnar will avoid the submissions, exert his will on Couture much like he did with Herring, and grind out a victory here.
  21. Ann Carrol was hideous, and I was glad to see her go. Trenni wasn't anything special (IMO), but she was an improvement over Ann. Personally, I find the amount of "in game" crap that they do to be at best, distracting. And for post game, I much prefer the radio show with Powell.
  22. No, I don't disagree, there is a context to everything. I just choose not to remove the statistics that don't support my argument. Especially when you're removing 3 starts because you fell he wasn't mentally there. At Suppans age and workload history, I strongly suspect that he's going to continue to trend downward, not improve back to number from even 2 scant years ago. I can make a good pitcher mediocre if I selectively remove 4 starts from his stat line to support my case, and vice versa. When you look at Suppan's month-to-month you can see he was up and down all season long.
  23. What do Schilling, Halladay, or Sheets have to do with this? When people are complaining about Sheets and his durability, Schiling and Halladay are guys that are used as the measuring stick as far as what a pitcher is capable of after several injury plagued years. What I'm getting at is that they're the exception, not the rule. The context to Suppan is that he's had 2200 innings (plus minor leagues) piled on his arm. At his age, I don't expect him to improve back to his mean, I expect him to continue to decline, as most, I'm sure will. When people want to project their favorite players, they always find a similar season or trend from a hall of famer or future hall of famer to point out whey their guy is going to do awesome. If you are going to stick to that argument then yearly stats are completely useless as you are dismissing part of his overall body of work which was the previous years. A single season is every bit as arbitrary as a single season minus 3 starts. Projection systems do exactly what I'm doing with Suppan, they regress back towards the mean and assume that a big jump in any given stat was probably a fluke of some type. I see no reason to expect a 5+ ERA out of Suppan next season as suggested above. With a guy Suppans age and workload, I think his most recent season should easily have more weight than others in any projection system. Regardless, you're still cherry picking by taking out a start in Chicago that he "got hit hard" in, starts at the end of the season that you feel he wasn't "mentally prepared for", which is simply impossible to know.
  24. But those starts were part of his overall body of work, and can't be dismissed. They're as relevant as anything else he did over the course of the year, and I dont' think it's unreasonable to assume (as long as we're making assumptions) that a guy Suppan's age, and with his history of a pretty steady, high workload is going to break down somewhat at the end of a season, and probably sooner, the older he gets. It's not like there's rhyme or reason to Suppan's statitstical distribution. He was bad in April. Very good in May. Average in June. He completely sucked in July. He was very good in August, and he completely sucked again in September. I'm not worried about this or that start that we can cherry pick out to make the argument. Soup is what he is, an overpaid 4th or 5th starter who's got 2200+ innings of work on his arm. People like to point at Curt Schilling and Roy Halladay and say "Ben Sheets can be like those guys too!". I think baseball history is littered with a lot more guys that burn out after age 34 and 2200 innings than continue to be effective. At Soup's age, I just don't expect him to improve back to his mean.
  25. I'm not sure I buy into the fact his projection should be seriously worse than what he put up in 2007 if he is healthy as his ERA/FIP were high mostly because of 1 bad start in CHI, 1 start he left with an injury and a few starts at the end of the year where he obviously wasn't healthy either physically or mentally So as long as we selectively remove all the starts that don't support the argument, he's an average starter. I can buy the injury start, but the "few starts at the end of the year where was obviously not mentally or physically healthy"? I might be able to buy physical injury, but mental health? So can we start cherry picking stats out of samples whenever we assume or suspect a player wasn't "mentally healthy"?
