  1. I think the return for Pina is being underestimated as well. We may see him an meh compared to who he replaced behind the plate (Lucroy in his prime) as well as Grandal, but he is capable of a .750 OPS and is very good defensively. Arguably one of the top 20 catchers in the majors. Put it this way: The Bears are reportedly fielding offers for Jordan Howard and could get the 2019 1st rounder they traded for Khalil Mack back from the Raiders. And Howard is dismissed by some as a one-dimensional power back.
  2. I'm telling everyone here... he's gonna be REAL good for the Crew. I've had him as my top position prospect in the Top 25 votes since Mid-2017. He's probably staying there this season as well.
  3. In the minors, be it full-season A or AAA, they can control things better with Nelson. Maybe April in Appleton, May with the Missions, and with the Crew in June. He shakes all the rust off in the minors, and that covers enough of the season to buy an extra year of team control.
  4. YES. It's annoying people continually skip over this fact. His tear was on the *opposite* side of the shoulder pitchers always tear and struggle to come back from. Nelson is clearly on his way back to where he was. There has been zero evidence suggesting otherwise. The only question is whether he'll be ready to throw 90-100 pitches opening day or if it'll take a little longer to do so. I tend to think that Nelson will come back to a very good level. But I think he will pitch on Opening Day for the San Antonio Missions. I just see five healthier and better options. Jimmy has two option years... they should not be afraid to use them.
  5. This was going to be my response. The Royals aren't going to give up anything worthwhile for Pina to lose 94 games instead of 96. Perhaps... perhaps not. Pina is still under team control for a few years and may be a valuable trade asset. Nottingham might also fetch a good return from KC. I think it wouldn't hurt to touch base with KC. One of IF Nicky Lopez and LHP Austin Cox would be a nice return for Nottingham. Both would be a good return for Pina.
  6. City of Philadephia has a wage tax. 3.88% So, he lives in one of the counties around Philly instead. Or a nice domicile in Delaware (NO income tax).
  7. The Reds have arguably pulled off a decent rebuild - even with getting Kemp, Puig, et al. It gives them a chance to make a run, but those contracts will come off the books, and that's a reasonably exciting team to put on the field as the young players develop a bit more. Do I think they fixed their pitching with DJ? Short-term, somewhat, they arguably hurt the Brewers more with that signing. Much of their improvement will be against the Cubs (who are on a downward trajectory), and a little against the Cardinals. But as I predicted, they are about a .500 or so team. The Brewers will take the division with the Moose and Grandal additions strengthening 2B and C.
  8. His 5:1 K/BB ratio is very superb. The only Brewers starter who came close in 2018 was Brent Suter - with a 4.42, and he's out with a Tommy John this year. Suter largely does the same thing: Avoids walks, doesn't give up very many hard-hit balls. Not as durable, but a similar approach.
  9. Well, Brent Suter went to the DL for a forearm strain... which later turned into a Tommy John...
  10. My thinking exactly. It's why I consider him an extension candidate. For about $4.5 to $5 million a year, you get a solid sub at seven positions, an emergency catcher, and an extra pitcher. It doesn't show up in the box score, or the season stats, but it may mean two or three more wins.
  11. We can hope. That said, I think the best choice is to use one of those option years he has. If he can rehab on an option year, great.
  12. Arbitrary prospect ranking lists aside, Ray proved last year that he is the real deal. I hope/think that he's going to be a stud in San Antonio this year, and likely be getting MLB time by mid season, beating Hiura to the punch. He is the type of guy that can make a big splash early on in his career with quick wrists and quick-twitch type muscle response. Unfortunately that is also the type of play that often battles various injuries that can sap those gifts. That said, I think this is the year he establishes himself as a big-time, highly recognized prospect. Don't sell Troy Stokes short. He's probably likely to be a very good asset as well. He's shown his power spike was real, he has speed, and OBP skills, too.
  13. Wouldn't mind a DFA for him or Albers at this point... The surprise for me... Grisham swings at the first pitch with a single to center. Really hope they get him to spray the ball to all fields.
  14. And Corey Ray cute the deficit down to three...
  15. Down 6-2 to the Scrubs... I know its just spring training, but still... I don't like seeing the Crew losing...
  16. Frustrating... So is not jumping on the Scrubs from the outset...
  17. I'll take my crack at a 40-man: Catcher (3): Lucroy, Simmons, Nilsson Infield (8): Sexson, Cooper, Molitor, Yount, Cirillo, Vina, Fielder, Weeks Outfield (5): Thomas, Braun, Jenkins, Vaughn, Burnitz Utility (4): Surhoff, Money, Kieschnick, Perez Starters (9): Higuera, Bosio, Caldwell, Sheets, Gallardo, Haas, Wegman, Eldred, Nieves Relievers (11): Plesac, Jones, Hader, Knebel, Turnbow, Jeffress, Crim, Fingers, Slaton, Axford, McClure Manager: Tom Trebelhorn Bench Coaches: Craig Counsell and Ned Yost Third-Base Coach: Dale Sveum First-Base Coach: Phil Garner Hitting Coach: Harvey Kuenn Pitching Coach: Mike Maddux Bullpen Coach: Bill Castro President of Baseball Operations: David Stearns VPs of Baseball Operations: Harry Dalton and Doug Melvin
  18. Agreed. Moose offers professional experience at third, short (minors - and he wasn't a butcher with a .959 fielding percentage), and first - and I think he'll do just fine at second as well.
  19. They need to make him study LoCain's at-bats. That is who Grisham should be trying to emulate.
  20. Perez, Spangenberg, and Kratz have seen some action on the mound in the majors. That's something to keep in mind... either for a long game (cheese sandwiches?) or in a blowout - one way or the other. I also put down positions where some of these players had put in time in their pro careers. Part of it is to note where someone can be "sneaked" - but the Brewers have a lot of options.
  21. Vina had 6.0 bWAR with the Brewers...similar to Jose Hernandez (6.2) and Ronnie Belliard (5.8). Vina had one nice year in 1998 but was otherwise unremarkable. If I was going to pick a 1990s 2B/SS, Jose Valentin (11.4) is the clear winner. It seems the main point in Clancy's post was about 2B. Jose Hernandez was a SS, not a 2B. Valentin was a SS, too (phenomenal range with a routinely very high error count -- he could get to tons of balls but often would make errors once he did). Gumby was a great dude & solid player but highly unspectacular. Longevity helps him out in this discussion but his production undercuts any real argument in his favor. You cannot win games if you can't put runs on the board... and Gantner, at least when I was starting to follow the Crew, was not very helpful in that regard. Yet he played too darn much.
  22. You must have a strong dislike of Gomez for some reason. I mean Mike Cameron? Carlos Gomez was one of the most electric players for his short stint of greatness. To be quite frank it isn’t close. Gorman Thomas mostly played center, and prior to Yount, was the team's all-time HR leader.
  23. Just was looking over the 40-man, and I am quite excited about the versatility on tap - probably one of the most under-estimated aspects of this team. Grandal - C/1B Pina - C/1B Kratz - C/P/1B Nottingham - C/1B (minors) Aguilar - 1B/3B/LF (minors)/RF (Venezuela) Arcia - SS/2B (minors) Dubon - SS (minors)/2B (minors)/3B (minors)/CF (AFL) Moustakas - 3B/1B/SS (minors) Perez - P/SS/2B/3B/1B/LF/RF/CF Saladino - SS/2B/3B/1B/LF/CF/RF Shaw - 3B/1B/2B/LF Spangenberg - 2B/3B/LF/CF/P Thames - 1B/LF/RF Braun - LF/RF/3B/1B/CF Cain - CF/RF/LF Gamel - LF/RF/CF/1B Stokes - LF (minors)/CF (minors)/RF (minors) Taylor - CF (minors)/LF (minors)/RF (minors) Yelich - LF/CF/RF All in all, it is quite impressive - ALL of the players in the position player group are versatile - and can fill in elsewhere when needed.
