Yep, he has a below average bat this year, one of his best years, and is average at best with the glove. He's likely going to get $5-6m in arbitration next year.
Exactly. Why did we never trade for pitching? Melvin whines about not being able to land top pitchers in free agency, but didn't he anticipate that ahead of time?Good pitchers have been traded over the last 8 years, proven vets and emerging big leaguers, yet Melvin never landed any of them. Yeah, except for all the pitchers Melvin traded for he never trades for pitching!
How many actual prospects have actually been dealt this season? Smoak, Ramos and maybe Hudson? Its hard to say Melvin should have jumped for the type of players being offered. Draft picks would be better than most of what has been traded.
They boo a lot more, But that's not really the point. The point is Fielder has a 1st person view of the loyalty in baseball. I'm not sayign the moves were wrong just that once you understand that everyone around you is a commodity its hard to get hugely attached.
I think people are a little blinded to what goes on. Since Fielders been here, he's seen Bill Hall go from a hero to a goat including being demoted, Hardy suffering something similar before being traded, Ben Sheets being booed despite being the best player the Brewers had for years, and TGJ being traded. Hard to see loyalty there.
There are a ton of teams in the offseason. Red Sox, White Sox, Cubs, Nationals, Dodgers, Rangers, Tigers, Braves, and possibly the Rays all will likely have openings.
The point is that the vast majority of 1B are in the +5 to -5 range and that might as well be 0 for how precise defensive stats are. For example Morneau is going to end up at like +12, but is that really true? He's in a brand new stadium so unlikely. The range for 1B just isn't something to get that worked up about.
Or maybe they would complain. Dealing with changing teams in teh middle of a season isn't the easiest thing in the world. I guarantee that Counsell, Edmonds and Hoffman all would be approached about a trade before it happens.
For players like Cameron, Edmonds, and Counsell trading them for some C level prospect isn't a good thing if similar type players now shun the Brewers because they don't want to be traded against their will. Getting the next Gabe Kapler or Jim Edmonds is more valuable than a 27 year old AAA shortstop.
Thing is 2B just don't get those pay days. For whatever reason, 2B are cheap relative to production. Chase Utley, arguably the 2nd best position player in baseball gets $15m a year.
Again one needs to stress how wide Loe's splits are. His FIP vs RHers is 2.12, vs LHers its 5.65. Which is pretty much in line with his starting splits in Nashville (3.16 and 5.76). He's been really lucky with LHers so far but I wouldn't expect that to continue.
In a move that will deeply affect basically only the relatives of the players involved Rosenthal tweets about a huge trade: #Mets talking to #Royals. Names in play from Royals: Meche, Farnsworth, Guillen. From Mets: O. Perez, L. Castillo, Francoeur. (more) #MLBabout 19 hours ago via web https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/19527470532
The Brewerfan.net salary page: http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewTeamSalary.do?teamId=1 EDIT:Though I think it's wrong about Gerut and he's a FA at the end of the year.
Arizona seems enamored with Saunders and even with a 3rd team involved its hard seeing the Brewers finding a guy with "a .630 winning percentage" in a deal that moves Fielder or Hart.
