  1. He isn't a FA, his contract is just up. MLB4U free agent thing is misleading. Wise will have just over 5 years of service time at the end of the season meaning he is still arby eligible and not yet a FA.
  2. Ned sticking up for his players but putting the tying run on base! Did Turnbow want to walk Stinnet? No, and likely that Maddux meeting right before hand did nothing to help calm him. Yost did want to hit Pujols and put the tying run on. If you can't see why the one act is much more of a problem, I don't know what to say.
  3. I wouldn't call Ned Yost a dead horse. An asthmatic Zebra, sure, but not a dead horse.
  4. Of course only Mark Belling believes this doesn't happen in any other business.
  5. Keep in mind Mark Attanasio asked Yost about playing Mench against RHP at the start of the season. Yost of course pointed to Mench's hot hitting at the time. Which lead to a month of Mench. And the same thinking lead to a month of Gwynn. As for the Crasnick article, anyone blaming Suppan for the Brewers problems has no idea what they are talking about.
  6. I don't know, leave Braun in for once? That second run is much, much more valuable than any defensive upgrade.
  7. Coco couldn't stay in because Ned's subs put Coco up in the next inning (Yes it was another Yost mistake). I still can't believe Counsell got that AB. Yes I know he just has to replace Braun, but really Mench only exists to kill LHP
  8. Regarding arbitration figures, there is no chance Bush gets $5M, if he's even back, he'll get no more than $2M. $5M sounds close for Estrada. Also doubt Mench is back, but he's sure not back for $5M. We can say $4M to be safe, but I doubt he's back -- I wouldn't be surprised if we just take our chances with Dillon for cheaper. $3M sounds close for Hardy but I'll say $3.5 max. Cappy shouldn't make a penny over his $3.25 salary next year, but you could say $3.5 to be safe. Vargas shouldn't make more than $4M, but I'd be surprised if he's back. Shouse, Wise, and Spurling numbers look close enough. So I think even on the safe side, if we tender every player there, we should have about $5M more left, at the minimum. Jenkins might be back, but not for his $9M option. If he wants to try to land a big contract before his career ends, he'll have to go elsewhere. He can probably come back here in '08 for $5M or so. I think you can safely count Mench or Vargas out next year to cover Jenkins' salary if he's back. Vargas is likely to get $5 million. The guy is in his 3rd arby season with double digit wins. This still doesn't account for McClugn who'll liekly get around $1 million if given a contract.
  9. I don't really love BP's stats, but since they are the easiest to transfer to wins and are always available they have some really good points. However, I think they just do a probablistic measure of balls hit into zones which means the shift hurts Fielder and Hardy's defensive numbers while helping Weeks'. BP has Fielder goign from bad to atrocious since last year and my guess that has more to do with Weeks playing 1/2 way bettwen first and second and being responsible for more of Fiedler's zone. As to how this affects pitchers, look at Jeff Suppan. His ERA this year is the highest its been since 2002 when in the AL. But if you look at Suppan's FIP, its the best of his career. Suppan has pitched his career this year but the defense makes it look like one of his worst.
  10. To illustrate the badness: Estrada -7 Miller 2 Fielder -15 Weeks -3 Graffanino 1 Hardy 5 Counsell 3 Braun -17 Hart 8 Hall -15 Gross -1 Gwynn -6 Jenkins 3 Mench -7 Total=-49 So the defense cost the Brewers between 5 and 7 wins versus an average defense.
  11. If anybody hit as poorly as Braun plays defense they wouldn't be in the major leagues. Braun's defense is a win below replacement level. And Weeks is far from serviceable, the only player you can make a case he's better than defensively this year is the completely washed up Biggio. Yes Weeks isn't making errors but he still isn't getting to balls. And even when Weeks was his worst, he was still significantly better than Braun.
  12. Please show which player starting in the outfield yesterday won't be here next year. Hall being moved to 3B is the only real way to improve the defense within the organization.
  13. Yes if Ned didn't have to make decisions he wouldn't make bad ones.
  14. Thats what supposedly got Yount to rethink his position.
  15. I don't doubt Bush was gassed. Keep in mind it was Texas and hot. That said Yost couldn't possible foresee Dillon hitting a double even though thats all he ahs been hitting lately....
  16. If the Brewers win out they can take the division!
  17. Ohh there were so many stupid Yostian things last night. Like how he just didn't take out Braun in the 8th, he took out Dillon as well. Why was this bad? It meant he couldn't pinch hit for Counsell to lead off the 9th inning because he ran out of suitable 3B players.
  18. I was reallly hping Wise was just a one batter guy so King would come in to face Berkman. At least that would make sense. but you knwo what else Yost did? He double switched when Wise came in, meaning he was expecting to get two innings out of Wise.
  19. How is getting a hot girlfriend on the side going to allow him to play Halo and spend "quality time" with his new baby? Congrats Russ! Yeah the chance that the women in the picture has recently given birth is close to zero
  20. He's ok-not an much of a fan of baseball as Sutton is though. Then again Sutton had to turn down his knowledge to fit in with FSN and the Rock(head).
  21. Well no people were complaining about how you shouldn't pay that much for a bench player. Bell realizes that this is his last chance to make real money, he is already 28.
  22. $3.5 million in the NBA is absolutely nothing. $3.5 million locked in for 5 years is great for a 6th or 7th man. Really don't now what you guys think NBa players get. Keep in mind the mid-level exemption, you know what basically exists to sign role players, is $5 million.
  23. The difference between Suppan and Bush is very very slight. Suppan's FIP this season is 4.39, Bush's is 4.48. We're talking less than 1/10 of a run. Suppan's FIP is 4.84 while Bush's is 4.40. Suppan is having a good year for him, no doubt, but its not that much different from Bush except for IP (which does favor Suppan a good deal). The point is consistency has little to do with it. Bush pitched 210 innings last year after all.
  24. My biggest problem with Yost's lineup were when he would hit Fielder-Estrada-Jenkins-Gross. Basically it was Turing test for the other manger, if he didn't bring in a left handed reliever to face that group he was brain dead. And then of course Yost would wait until Gross to pinch hit so Mench could then face the right handed pitcher ready to come in.
  25. If you take Tulo over Braun, you have to take Pence over Braun as well. Tulo's WARP 7.4 Pence's WARP 4.6 Braun's WARP 3.9
