  1. Going into Friday's game: Brewers OPS .721 Opponents OPS .649 That sure doesn't look like the Brewers should have a loosing record.
  2. Jenkins came into the game hitting .296. Yes his power hass been off. but to complain about Jenkins when Clark has been putrid, Hardy has a sub 300 OBP, and Miller has been hittless for a week seems like either you're blind, prejudiced or trolling. And sooner or later Yost will realize that Hart made the team. Glavine gave up 1 hit to lefties coming into the game.
  3. The problem isn't hitting with RISP its the fact that there haven't been many runners. Thats what happens when your top 2 have an OBP below .300.
  4. Another tough lefty and another non-start for Hart.
  5. Yost botched that big time. You bunt Cirillo and you know you are left with Jenkins versus a lefty and then Isringhouse. Why give up a batter and an out against Wainright in order to see that?
  6. Gary Bennet is the only catcher actually worse offensively and defensviely than Moeller
  7. It seemed they were concerned about Helling having pulled something.
  8. Obviously Gross just doesn't have the Eye of the Tiger. If he did, he would have at least avoided the tag.
  9. Except of course Jenkins is a good defensive outfielder with the best arm in the game while Lee is below average with a terrible arm. Jenkins is hitting .250 after 6 games while facing two decent left handed pitchers. I guess I don't see the huge issue right now save for the fact Jenkins can't hit left handed pitchers. But that is hardly new.
  10. Jack Wilson getting a bunch of love. And that was after the Eckstein mention. Adam Everett has to make an appearence soon. FSN making sure you know about scrappy white players.
  11. Tracy was played. I'd rather face Gross no matter than handidness that the rest of the Brewer bench.
  12. Cruz playing 30 games as a CFer will tell what? Why move an actual player for two guys likely who have to learn to play corner spots in order to even get a chane at a roster spot.
  13. 1. Does this end the Cruz as CFer experiment before it begun? Ash said Gwynn and Krynzel will get 2/3 of the CF starts. 2. The outfield is crowded enough with out putting Sorenson out there.
  14. My guess is that in tiem EqA will die out. Mostly because the need it filled no longer exists. More people look at more stats then BA now that a stat that tries to make everything in "batting average" terms is more heat than light. I stopped using as soon as BP stopped giving Minor League EqA sicne it was the only thing really helpfull about it (mostly because it was the onyl easily found minor league/ major league eqivalents).
  15. Some stats are better descriptive stats and some are better projective stats. ERA and WHIP tell you alot about how exactly a given pitcher has fared. However, if you would like to project what that pitcehr is going to do in the future, the big three of K/9, BB/9, and HR/9 give you a lot better information, with K/9 being teh most informative.
  16. Actually that is bad statisitcs. GIDP assumes a man is on first. Better teams have more men on base hence more opportunities for GIDP.
  17. I'm not saying it can or can't. I'm saying that there is no evidence it does. There is evidence that having a player on 1b has a sizable effect. And part of that effect is forcing the pitcher to go from the strech. But there is no noticble difference on how he pitches if that player is an an average major leaguer of Juan Pierre. If the pitcher thows more fastballs, you'd expect that to effect how the next hitter hits. But again nothing there. As to errors, there just are too few to say anything. Now there are holes in the study, ie "does having to constantly deal with basestealers lead to shorter outings?" isn't addressed. But we are dealing with players who have been playing baseball of some form for easily 15-20 years in the most part and if they couldn't handle the pressure chances are they wouldn't have been in the major leagues.
  18. The point is, if how the pitcher thinks or feels doesn't effect the results, who cares? The study isn't trying to answer if pitcher's extra sweat makes gripping the ball more difficult and so he has trouble throwing. All it asks, are there any noticeable effects of basestealers vs non basestealers, and there is no evidence of any.
  19. You can say that it makes a differencce. Except there is nothing there to show that it does. A man on 1B makes a big difference. A basestealer on 1B vs anyone else makes a small difference. Just because there is a bunch of activity doesn't mean it does anything. A rooster crowing might think he makes the sun rise.
  20. Hardball times just finished a two part series on whether having speed on first affects the pitcher enough to give an advatnage to the hitter. Link to the second part: www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/base-stealer-intangibles-part-2/ Lots of math there, but the bottom line is that most of the benefit can be attribuited to having any man on first forcing non optimal defensive positioning. That over a season having a true spped threat dancing on first estiamtes to be worth about 1.5 runs over a season.
  21. Keep in mind Mr. Playoffs Derek Jeter was actually far worse in the playoffs than the regular season until recently.
  22. Lee's position in the lineup will lead to more RBIs. Add in about 15 SB and you have higher fantasy value.
  23. Keep in mind that Jenkins has been an utter monster in the past which is overshadowed by his injury history. In his first full season he had a 927 OPS followed the next season by a 933 OPS. After that his injuries have lead to a bunch of up and down seasons.
  24. The point is that as most player BIP% goes down, the H/BIP should go up. As you walk more and K more you'll have fewer softly hit balls. Jenkins season in 2005 was very clsoe to his 2003 season.
