  1. Trout was likely to get $15 million his first year in arbitration.
  2. I don't get why everyone think Weeks' 2012 was terrible. He hit .230/.328/.400 with a wRC + of 99, ie basically dead average. It was disappointing after his 2011 but to pretend the it was the start of what happened last year is a stretch. It is also the likely ceiling of Gennett.
  3. He's not a great hitter for a catcher. He'll be an absolutely terrible hitter for a first baseman. He's a great hitter for a catcher and projects better than Overbay with the bat.
  4. Ehh, of what can realistically be done (mangers can never be lame ducks!) picking up the option and not doing a long extension pretty much means he can be removed easily.
  5. I agree. Braun at 1B would have been the best move. His problems at 3B were throwing - not fielding. I think he could easily be an above average fielder. Of course, that's just my opinion. I also think it could have helped keep Braun healthy and in the lineup. He's 30. He's going to get dinged up more and more. Braun had trouble getting to the ball, fielding the ball, and throwing the ball. It wasn't that he wasn't good, he was historically bad.
  6. Peralta's second half differed from his first half due to luck. His FIP in the first half was 4.32 and in the second it was 4.26. He K'd more batters but started give up a bunch more fly balls leading to home runs. ZiPs FIPs projections: Garza: 3.65 Estrada: 3.75 Gallardo: 3.75 Lohse: 4.09 Smith: 4.10 Peralta: 4.36 Given that putting Peralta in AAA can buy another year of his prime, Smith pitching allows for a left hander in the rotation, and it allows for both Thornburg and Peralta remain stretched out to come to Milwaukee when a starter goes down; Peralta in Nashville makes perfect sense.
  7. Peralta is below everyone else and should be in Nashville with Smith in the rotation instead.
  8. I don't get the complaints. Morris had an entire season in AAA to show he should be in Milwaukee. He actually hit worse as the season went on. If anything, the Brewer moves this offseason show the front office have some hope for him. Instead of trading for an Ike Davis who would have blocked Morris, they sign Overbay to compete with Juan Francisco. The door is wide open for Morris to walk through. Green missed an entire season so he just needs to play. Yeah he should have been up in 2011 taking PAs from McGehee but that did not happen. His 2012 in Milwaukee was not good but his BABIP was abysmal. If he was healthy, he likely would have been in the mix this year. Of course if he was healhty last year he might have had a starting job this year. Rogers turns 26 in 2 days. He put up an OK season in AA, but not really when you consider he was 25. If he wasn't a corner bat he might be something, but he plays 1B.
  9. Yeah I was surprised when Texas made the QO and really surprised when Cruz turned it down. A 33 year old OFer with defensive issues who can't hit outside Texas coming off a PED suspension? Not sure who thought there was going to be a big market there. This is great deal for the Orioles if it stays as reported. They get Cruz at below market cost for this year and don't have to pick up any decline years for big dollars at the cost of a 2nd round pick. And if the Orioles end up as expected 4th in the division come July, Cruz could be moved for more talent than they gave up with the pick (assuming he's playing decent).
  10. Well he did get a full season of time so he has a pension. He likely could get a college coaching job somewhere.
  11. 1) Bianchi can't hit. So no he isn't an option to platoon with Gennett since his only role should be SS and emergency fill in (maybe defensive replacement on occasion). Bianchi hopefully gets fewer than 100 PAs on the season. 2)Gennett is not going to hit .334. He is not going to have a BABIP of .380 in any given year. Turn that back to a .330 like he has done in the minor leagues and give him a realistic ISO of .110 he hits .284/.315/.394. Basically what Gennett hit in September (and his BABIP was still high that month). Turn that into a .300 BABIP and he's a .254/.285/.374 hitter. 3)Platooning Gennett isn't to get a .800 OPS 2B, it is to hopefully get a .740 OPS 2B.
  12. I don't think I can recall seeing a player who was a top prospect and had such a good year as Segura did, become so terrible that he wasn't worth 11 million from ages 23 to 28. Even Gomez was worth substantially more than that before ue figured it out. But using your logic, is it fair to say that you thought the 8/45 they gave to Braun was a bad idea? Nick Markasis is sad you don't think of him anymore.
  13. Kemp has no real positive value in his contract. You do not give up anything of value to take it on.
  14. But cutting Weeks doesn't solve the main problem. Gennett can't hit left handed pitching. His career splits in the minor leagues are .259/.294/.349. He needs to be platooned. Unless you are a huge Elain Herrera backer I don't see what cutting Weeks solves except to placate certain fans.
  15. Ehh, the deal isn't bad assuming Cleveland keeps him as a starting OFer. In arby he would make what, $3m, $6m and $9m? So Cleveland gets 1 year of FA for $7-9m. Given that Brantley could be a guy who has a huge BABIP year and looks amazing Cleveland may have wanted to avoid that risk his arbitration amount explodes. That said, Brantley really should be platooned and if Cleveland did so they would be better off as a team and Brantley's arbitration amounts would be lower. The problem isn't so much the contract as its giving Brantley a full time corner OF spot.
  16. Schafer is on this team to stay for defensive purposes in CF. And I like that we have a defensive gem as a backup more so than a potential .750OPS bat. without giving you much defensively. And I would rather have a guy who brings value in the 155 games Gomez starts in center field instead of guy who is better defensively for those 6 games Gomez doesn't start.
  17. Bonifacio's value is that he isn't helpless with teh bat and would be replacing two players who are, Bianchi and Schafer. This means Gindl makes the team and becomes a weapon off the bench. Add in Bonifacio's speed and if used correctly he would provide good value to the Brewers.
  18. The biggest reason to platoon 1B is that the Brewers need to get more left handed hitters in the lineup.
  19. I would have thought that except Pittsburgh did not give him a QO and has shown no signs of wanting him back. It's weird.
  20. No. Ackley isn't much of an improvement on Gennett right now. Ackley Zips wOBA is .306 and Gennett's is .301. Sure moving Ackley out of Seattle might help, but so will platooning Gennett with Weeks.
  21. He was putrid against LHers when he had to face them in the majors. For platoon partners its basically Shane Robinson (with Craig likely coming in to play 1B). So that might make 1B look better but by making RF worse.
  22. Craig & Adams look like notably better options compared to Francisco or Reynolds. Frankly, the Brewers don't have one guy at this point that would be better than either of the Cards' options... and just for good measure Craig/Adams is a RH/LH duo. If they need to platoon, they have that option. It seems like a pretty reasonable guess that the Cards will get solid production from 1B in 2014. Craig is likely the right fielder which leaves Adams alone at 1B. Adams ZiPs projection: .265/.309/.464 Adams likely has a higher ceiling but he isn't a world beater.

  24. Yeah. It's kind of startlingly dire at 1B for the Brewers. Right now its dire for most teams. The Cardinals aren't any better off. It seems that there are handful of really good guys and then a bunch of guys below average.
  25. No, if anything Bianchi's lack of offense is understated. He is terrible. His wRC+ last year was 53. Against left handers it was 51. That is horrendous. That was worse than Yuni. He can't hit. His only value comes from a plus glove. So no, he is not a candidate to platoon with Gennett and he is a candidate to be replaced.
