  1. The big difference is that Francisco is a terrible defensive player. Smoak and Morrison (or Middlebrooks) would likely be better. Overbay would also likely be better defensively but given his age he also could completely collapse offensively.
  2. Because there is a decent market for him. And it's such a weird case where he costs a decent amount in salary but he doesn't provide much salary relief to KC if traded since the contract isn't guaranteed. And the Yankees are in desperate need of infield help as are the Dodgers.
  3. Smoak is just a guy who might be the LH part of a decent platoon. He has 1942 PAs with a line of .227/.314/.386. That is a guy who is on the verge of getting non tendered, not someone you give up talent for. And keep in mind he is actually older than Ike Davis.
  4. It is amazing how many Brewer fans denigrate Estrada. He could easily be Milwaukee's most valuable starter next season if gets to 180 innings. His ZiPs rate projections match Gallardo's.
  5. Not sure what Moustakasa really brings and see no reason why KC trades him. The only reason Butler seems to be on the markets is the Royals want another starter and Butler is relatively expensive (and then why trade Smith? KC is weird).
  6. Overbay/Reynolds is likely a downgrade(both are bad) and Gennett likely isn't better than Weeks.
  7. I see no way the Brewers will or can pay what KC will want for Butler. And that is before we talk about Butler's salary and questionable ability at 1B.
  8. Or because both Thornburg and Nelson to project to be replacement level players.
  9. While his ERA went from 4.61 to 3.99 his FIP went from 4.32 to 4.26. If his xFIP reveals his true talent, that went from 4.20 to 4.03. If he pitches to a 4.03 FIP or so for near 200 innings he be worth about two wins.
  10. Volquez had one good year in 2008. The would be quite a bounce back. It's more likely Liriano gets injured again or his home run rate spikes back up.
  11. The most likely scenario is that Francisco or Overbay is the LH part of a platoon at 1B. If neither looks like they can really do that then Reynolds would be come the defacto full time 1B. That assumes that there is not a trade for one of the 1B that may end up out there.
  12. My guess is Weeks gets traded. That clears one spot. They are not going to cut Weeks right away and he has almost no trade value. There is a decent amount of fluff on the 40 man that can be removed namely Rogers, Herrera, and Figaro.
  13. I don't get why people keep putting Schafer in over Gindl. Yes Gindl can't play CF for any long period of time but his bat is so much better that having to deal with him playing CF two games a month is fine. If Overbay makes the team he can play corner OF if needed.
  14. Because the last minor league veteran utility infielder coming off a great AAA season in his early 30s worked out so well. I always wanted Erick Almonte 2.0
  15. Only partly if its a typical arbitration type contract. If he's cut before the season he only gets a prorated amount.
  16. Maybe. However, I'd doubt we'd see BOTH a Reynolds/Overbay platoon at 1B AND a Weeks/Gennett platoon at 2B because they'd quite possible be left with no utility IF . . . or they'd have to carry only 4 OFs. Carrying 4 OFers when the 5th is Schafer is hardly a terrible thing. Overbay/Reynolds could stand in a corner OF spot if really needed.
  17. Partly because they reduce his PAs by 100 from last year. That is unlikely to happen.
  18. Chris Cistulli tweeted the projection with an article tomorrow: https://twitter.com/cistulli/status/425007388937039873/photo/1/large Brewers at 33 WAR. Pirates at 35. Reds at 41. Cardinals at 41 (though with 5! from the bullpen) Can easily see the Brewers beating those expectations at 3B, CF, LF and Estrada as #3 with full health.
  19. This still allows the Brewers to get Davis if the Mets finally determine that Davis's $3.5 million is better spent on bringing in Drew at short. Davis is a much better defender. The left handed part would also help. Steamer Projections: Reynolds: .225/.325/.436 Davis: .238/.340/.439 Young: .279/.331/.400 Young doesn't make sense as full time 1B. As a platoon player and utility infielder, he would have been better for the team. In house: Morris: .241/.287/.419 Halton: .246/.304/.391 Rogers: .241/.303/.371 Francisco: .238/.297/.442 Semi-in house (or why isn't Gindl a bit taller): Gindl .256/.320/.409 Freely Available at one point: McGehee: .241/.306/.386 That does assume McGehee's BABIP isn't really in the .250 range. He can (could) actually play 3B unlike Reynolds. McGehee got $1.1 million so $2.5 million for Reynolds is far from crazy.
  20. Also position matters. At catcher the defense numbers are near meaningless and at 1B defensive number ignore receiving throws.
  21. Loretta was not better than Weeks for the Brewers.
  22. Morris is already 25 so in reality it doesn't really matter. There is just no reason to give 1B to Morris based on a few dozen spring training PAs. Spring training should really be incidental to the decision.
  23. Will Smith for Billy Butler! Make it happen Doug! (You have to wonder if Smith wasn't a Ned guy. If you're not a Ned guy you are gone no matter your talent. See Adams, Mike). Butler and Davis should have very similar values. Butler is likely the better player sure, but he also is going to make like $8-10 million more over the next two years.
  24. The marginal cost of Ramirez is $10 million. Currently the FA price of a win is about $6 million dollars. Meaning that Ramirez's partial season last year was worth about $10 million. He will have to fall of a cliff for him not to be worth picking up the option. It will be near impossible to find a better use of the money.
  25. Most of those guys were barely used at 1B last year. Using some combination of those guys other than Francisco would have been an improvement. Based on what? Morris was floundering in AAA. He had a .743 OPS in August with a .305 OBP. Rogers was a .810 OPS as a 24 year old in AA, his projections are in the .240/.300/.370 range.
