  1. We tend to assume a budget, but in reality we have to wait until the team actually signs its players. After the Ulice Payne fiasco, Doug Melvin said he didn't really like other GMs knowing what his budget was. Note that you'll rarely?if ever?spot a wintertime quote about the budget from either Mark A. or Doug. That said, I think Mark did say that this year's initial budget was expanded a bit.
  2. And how many #1 draft picks' mothers were ever a racing sausage? Probably one. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. I think baseball views the Rangers playing in the AL West as its number one alignment issue. At any rate, it's a perfect example of what baseball was trying to avoid when it created the uneven divisions. Getting reasonable TV times is important. I love the occasional 9 PM game, but I wouldn't be a fan of seeing 30 per year. Interestingly, several years ago, Bob Costas recommended two 15-team leagues, with the Astros in the AL West to give the Rangers a 'mate'.
  4. I believe that generally, major league teams can even veto moves between divisions. It's a little muddy because before the league offices were merged, each league had slightly different rules. But I do recall both the Diamondbacks and D-Rays being considered 'movable' without team approval until a set number of seasons went by. I don't believe there were any enticements to switch leagues. The Royals were offered first crack and turned down the invitation. The Brewers were the only other team to express interest. I remember other owners going out of their way to say that Bud was very concerned that the move could be viewed a 'special favor' to the Brewers and that it wasn't the case at all. I think that if nobody would have volunteered to switch leagues, MLB would have decided to put both expansion teams in the same league. The problem I have with 4-team divisions and no wild card would be that the chance of crummy teams in the playoffs (while good ones stay home) increases dramatically.
  5. Two 15-team leagues were considered with the last expansion. I believe there were even some sample schedules made up. I'd love to see them. Theoretically, with six 5-team divisions, you could do this and have some beautiful symmetry: Intradivision: 72 games (4 opponents times 18 games apiece) Intraleague, interdivision: 60 games (10 opponents times 6 games apiece) Interleague: 30 gamesIt's going to be interesting to see how this thread co-exists with the Interleague play thread. If the comments turn out to overlap a lot, we may want to consider a 'merger'. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. Rogers Centre might be a place for someone to repeat Damian's 'feat'.
  7. I can't speak for any personal experience with Avast, but everything I've heard is good. AVG is another good freebie. I've seen good luck with that one.
  8. I did the Google thing, but didn't peruse it all that carefully. What I wanted to find, though, was a biography telling us how Ms. Wrigley met Mr. Field.
  9. Maybe Ms. Wrigley-Field will have a son who plays for the Cubs?
  10. If you want to do first names, there's always the Cleveland Naps. That's kind of cheating, though, when the team is named after the player.
  11. The important thing that BBF is pointing out is that there are frequently variables that get in the way when we try to look for reasons behind a particular phenomenon. In this case, the 'good opponent' factor is getting in the way of judging how much difference actually exists when the team is on the road. How do we isolate the variables and come close to an actual answer? I'd submit that only Russ knows for sure! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  12. The Mac handles a kajillion hard drive formats, so you should be fine. To run Windows on a Mac, you need Parallels Desktop for Mac (not free) or Boot Camp (free). Parallels runs your OSes side by side without rebooting. Boot Camp requires rebooting, but may also offer a speed advantage at times. Also, Parallels will run a long list of OSes, including versions of Windows back to 3.1. Boot Camp was Windows XP only the last time I heard; maybe it supports Vista by now. I think Apple may refer to Boot Camp as beta. In reality, I think it's a part of the next OS (10.5/Leopard) that's ready right now.
  13. Here are the words we needed. Quoth Tom Haudricourt: Edit: I think I have this right. Fri: Gallardo Sat: Sheets Sun: Bush Mon: Suppan Tues: Capuano Wed: Vargas
  14. As a gauge, I guess we can look at players who've missed time to injury and see how their innings have been handled. For instance, here's Manny Parra: 2003: 138 2/3 2004: 73 1/3 2005: 91.0 2006: 86.0 2007: 95 2/3 It seems that the team is willing to let Manny pitch quite a bit in the foreseeable future.
  15. Russ, did you notice that the article was posted at 3:33 EDT? That's before Bush pitched today. It'll be interesting to see what the next article says. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  16. twobrewers, this is a great topic. I've been wondering the same thing, but I did kind of predict that Russ and igor would come up with the answers they did. Funny thing is when I saw your thread title, I thought we'd be talking about a 2007 innings limit ala Gallardo. That shouldn't be necessary at all at this point. Yeah, that Villanueva closer talk is scattered all over the place. It'd be better to use one of the other threads and let this one concentrate in the innings issue.
  17. Let's use this thread: Bush or Vargas to the Pen for Now/Yo with one more start Feel free to paste your comments over there.
  18. Pat left the Brewers for the Cubs job. You can't blame him for seizing the opportunity to go from second banana in a small market to top banana in a large one.
  19. Changing .tif to .txt or .rtf requires OCR (optical character recognition) software. Sam's link probably provides that. Realize that if you're doing OCR, you will need to proofread to make sure characters were converted correctly. An option for .pdf is to find a Mac. The ability to convert any document to .pdf is built into OS X's print dialog boxes. EDIT: Also consider calling your scanner's tech support. You might not have installed something you have sitting on a disk somewhere. Or the company web site might have something you can download. I didn't examine Sam's link, but that looks to be the best short-term solution. Long-term, you should be looking into getting your scanner to handle more formats, anyway.
  20. I thought it was eight players. Cal Ripken played his entire career with Baltimore. Wade Boggs played for the Rays.
  21. Claudio's arby status helps a lot should the team decide to deal him. If he were able to walk, the only in-season trade options would be to deal him to contenders. He can go to anybody.
  22. My only complaint is that I couldn't get this phone even if I wanted to. Cingular doesn't serve my chunk of the state. Verizon's unavailability bugs me more, though. I'd sign one of their contracts in a heartbeat to be able to cheaply use the OnStar phone built into my car. I can't blame Verizon for this, though. Cell phone carriers aren't allowed to enter any market they want. GM could have figured out that there's essentially no such thing as a national carrier.
  23. As far as I can tell, this thread isn't a duplicate. It's purpose is to discuss one guy going 11 days between starts. However, it is one of those topics that could 'spill over', becoming a catch-all thread and a 'de facto' duplicate. If your post is a better fit for one of these threads, please consider using it? Who's better than whom: Gallardo is Better Than Bush/Vargas Who should be bumped from the roster: When Capuano comes back & assuming Yo stays... Yo's innings restrictions: Gallardo and limiting his innings
  24. I gess I aint payin much attension.
  25. hawing, you can't bring yourself to spell what way, can you? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
