  1. Does Clark still have options? If it's close there is a lot to be said for Rogers being your first call-up in a bunch of injury situations. It is not hard to imagine any of the OF or IF corner men doing a DL stint.
  2. Lefty specialist is certainly not what one hopes for, but I'm always in the better to get something useful out of a draft pick than nothing.
  3. I could see Medeiros having managed to make enough progress even with the struggles last year, but Gatewood just seems like a stretch with the contact issues he was having. That said given the Brewers tendency to be cautious if they are convinced it's hard not to see that as good news.
  4. I don't think I've ever read a scouting report that gushed that much based only on performance during instructionals. If that is accurate Lara could be even money to pass Arcia as the best SS prospect in the system by the end of the year.
  5. Very excited to see all of those guys likely ending up stateside, they could be a nice little mini wave of talent.
  6. For whatever reason they aren't as commonly cited anymore, but baseball prospectus use to publish leverage stats and did a lot of this work on evaluating the relative importance of being able to pitch your best player only when the game is close and late. My recollection was that your best reliever at maximum leverage could basically double his innings. So 70 innings of Mariano Rivera were worth the same as about 140 innings of a starter with the same ERA.
  7. I'm inclined to agree on the continued rise in the rankings. Other than Jungman there don't seem to be many good candidates for players graduating off the list. Rogers, Knebel, and Wren all could even if things go really crazy and Hellweg and Rivera graduate off I don't see that being a negative impact as there are other names that could fill in as depth. On the flipside as Pipeline has them rated all 8 of the top guys have the tools and pedigree to end up as top 100 prospects by the end of the season (they all won't of course) and none are grad candidates.
  8. One fun thing about seeing everyone's list is getting to see some of the names of guys I couldn't quite fit in my top 25, but who still are plenty worthy of following.
  9. 1. Orlando Arcia SS 2. Tyrone Taylor CF 3. Clint Coulter RF 4. Monte Harrison CF 5. Wei-Chung Wang LHP 6. Gilbert Lara SS 7. Taylor Williams RHP 8. Devin Williams RHP 9. Kodi Medeiros RHP 10. 10. The comment about Thornburg was spot on. Rather than attempting to interpret Melvins actions in terms of pre existing scenarios and stories about team motives, this move really provides a balance to the move to move towards youth in the rotation this year. We were thin, and being able to flex Tyler into a back-up rotation is actually fairly creative thinking rather than just saying he is going to be a bullpen guy (which given his success seemed pretty logical). Real depth requires having a bunch of young guys who are stashed at AAA with options. Similarly if the bullpen arms get hit harder than the rotation Tyler might flex back.
  11. 15 years of sabermetrics, 40 years of gatorade commercials, multiple decades of labor peace and huge TV contracts. The crazy thing is that it took this long for some team to do this.
  12. It's the silly minute creep. The game doesn't start at 7, it starts at 7:10, instead of being 3 hours it's 3:15. So the game really gets done at almost 10:30, which means actually getting into bed at 11. I get up at 5:30 as well, so being up late is a poor plan. Once in a while if there are extra innings or something it is not a big deal, but knocking that extra 15 minutes off makes a big difference.
  13. It is important to recognize that these kids only get this level of money because of their incredibly small numbers. With an even larger number of restrictions than 15-20 years ago on talent acquisition there are very few outlets for the large markets to use their one advantage (money) as a result all of the incentive is to drop a bunch of money and effectively purchase the rights to an extra draft pick (anyone care to speculate how much Jerry Jones would spend if he had the chance to just spend money for an extra draft pick??)
  14. I wouldn't be surprised if the Brewers criteria for bumping him to double AA mostly involves transitioning defensively, while showing just enough offense given their park factor. Which is to say if he picks up the OF quickly I could see him getting bumped up by midseason as long as he was taking quality ABs and still had an OPS in the .800's
  15. Coulter makes a lot of sense as a 'sleeper' in that sense. If his transition to the OF goes well and he mashes again like he did last year he 'suddenly' looks like a big time bat. His slash line from last year was one of the better ones in the minors. He could easily end up with more All-star appearances than the guys currently ahead of him on the Brewers top 10 just based on the fact he is a legitimate hitter in the current offensive era.
  16. This sounds like the veteran move to cut down on the amount of work in spring training. Its a slight worry in that it could linger, but the time frame for healing really sounds like they are giving him as much time as possible.
  17. I could quibble with those numbers, but it is probably one of the more agreeable projections I've seen from BP over the years, basically everyone outside of the Cards is equal in the Central though the Reds are a half step back. I see the Brewers potential record as more volatile this year than last. Good health and a bounce back from Braun makes 90 wins a possibility, conversely it's not too hard to imagine crash and burn seasons where we end up a 70 wins.
  18. Given that between the draft and international free agent signing pool restrictions are in place, big market teams trying a draft and develop strategy actually helps competitive balance. The advantage of being rich is money, if you start focusing on low cost players you are by definition not spending money. There maybe short term adjustments, but the real long term loser here is not other teams its the players union.
  19. I certainly wouldn't mind turning Sardinas into a couple of prospects. I could even see swapping Sardinas for another quality prospect and Barmes. The last part is tricky to evaluate since he has declined, but he used to be an excellent defender at SS and 2B, but last years stats are too limited to know if getting the platoon advantage against lefties would make him a very useful bench guy.
  20. Just to clarify my earlier comment its not just that ranking of prospects get mushy in the middle, the actual talent difference between teams in these regions is not terribly large either (or prospects being prospects is only truly knowable in hindsight)
  21. That is certainly possible, I'm not as detail oriented on the prospect side as I used to be. On the other hand I tend to think that there is generally relatively small differences in the rankings once you get outside the very top or bottom groups, and I think the Brewers have accumulated both enough depth and high end guys to fit in the mushy middle ground.
  22. The world has temporarily tilted towards the pitchers, but I wonder if just letting a team figure out how to collect more flexible relief arms, so they could use more bench hitters wouldn't do just as much for offense? That said I'd be far more open towards implementing a minimum batters faced requirement than banning shifts.
  23. My sense based on Sickels more recent comments was that he seemed to be thinking of the Brewer system as more middle of the pack, which strikes me as about correct.
  24. As something of a copout it does of course depend on the final details, but for the sake of argument someone had brought up Roache as a potential trade chip. If one gets the Phillies kick in a modest amount of money, it becomes pretty doable for him to have a solid enough of a year were even if the Brewers have a down year, he accumulates more trade value than he has right now, as his salary drops. So even if we are talking about the trade in a pure rebuilding sense I could see the trade making sense.
  25. I'm rather curious about the possibility that he has added a new pitch as well. He may have been the last man into the rotation, but I wouldn't be particularly surprised if he emerged as the top guy.
