  1. Well depending you'd prefer using Parra today if you need innings and Villy tomorrow since that gives you that in game swith from lefty to righty in case the opposing manager does any platooning.
  2. Clearly TGJr on the HR derby he actually hit the wall with a fly ball in a real game this week. It's one thing to deal Barret and given that him and Zambrano couldn't live together it's justifiable to stick with Carlos. But to give up on Bowen after 30 ABs that's a bad week! If you look at his season EQA its .242 vs. Kendall's .187 mark. I agree the Cubs really helped us out on this one. What's next Aramis Ramirez for Wes Helms?
  3. This is almost certainly true Rluz, but it is much more charitable given the choice between ignorance and evil to assume ignorance.
  4. This is just an extended break for Sheeter so he can still be fresh in October. Pedro did it for years.
  5. I hate it when people can't read even a complete paragraph before they make some kind of judgement. I am ashamed that this elected official is from Wisconsin and somehow managed to make it onto a board controling the UW system. 'We hope to learn more about how people learn by studying fantasy baseball leagues' Now perhaps being involved in education, research, and enjoying baseball it is too obvious to me how these concepts relate. But his implied claim of crusading for the tax payer with this sort of terrible oversight is the height of hypocrisy.
  6. Well considering at this point it basically would take a career ending injury to stop Barry it is more expedient and morally acceptable to root for him to hit a whole bunch in the next few days.
  7. It could be potentially serious, but I believe that these things happen every so often and is more a testament to the stringent monitoring to make sure nothing gets out of hand.
  8. How exactly is that Parra is only a relief prospect for the Crew? That idea seems to have occurred more as a matter of convenience for us fans looking for a better lefty bullpen option than Shouse.
  9. I'm so surprised that the D-backs are doing so well because their prospect strength like the Brewers has been in position players, but they are playing so poorly and in that home ballpark. Owings used to be a Cubs prospect as a recall.
  10. Well it stands to reason that they brought up Manny instead of Balfour because of Sheets uncertainty gives Ned another option to start. I'm a little torn though because going on the bereavement list would have to be about the worst possible way to get Pipped, but I'd love for Parra to come up and make it impossible to be sent down.
  11. How is it always an adventure with Coco on the mound?? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif The career save percentage record is what Hoffman somewhere in the upper 80's. Which means that the HOF closers of still mess up 1 out of 10 times. Things may seem adventurous because I think Yost has been more aggressive with Cordero and put him into games earlier and I think he's gotten quite a few tough save opps and not the 3 run laughers.
  12. Random observation Heether not on the Power 50 is a better prospect currently then either Scott Kirby or Josh Klimek. For those who have forgotten at one point Kirby was a top 10 prospect according to BA.
  13. I think this tells us a fair amount about what Sheets thought about the HR he gave up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. You could be correct casey. I was looking at the league average OBP fairly recently so I know that one is still pretty good the other could be a little bit on the high side
  15. So I felt compelled to measure the true weakness of our team so far this year: the rotation. Which is quite paradoxical considering everyone thought the lineup was kind of sketchy and the rotation would be very good. Well my tools were a little bit crude, but I think they give a solid estimate to the size of the damage Briefly I used some respected preseason predictions (the PECOTA 50% line) and then compared ERAs that were projected vs. actual ERAs this year for our 5 starters. Sheets, Suppan, and Vargas have as a group done just about exactly what was projected of them by PECOTA. Sheets has done a little worse and Vargas has been a little better. Bush and Capuano though have done much worse than their projections. For Bush his projected ERA was 4.22 compared to his 4.86. If you look at his projected components like HR, hits, walks, and Ks. You see he has actually out performed his K rate while his hit rate is way above what it should be with the other components in line. With Cappy his ERA was projected at 4.37 and is currently 5.16 Again his K rate is ahead of what was projected, but his walk rate is almost double! His hit rate is a little higher too. If you total up all the ERA differences and then scale for the innings pitched for the entire rotation I come up with a figure of 14.3 runs too many given up. Which gives an estimated win impact of 2 wins.
  16. I would care much less if his point of view was less common than it is.
  17. Braun now inching quite close to an OBP of .400 and a SLG of .700 Really disappointed that Hardy swung at the junk pitch to not load the bases for Braun before. Granted it would have been a different AB and you can't assume Braun still would have hit a HR, but given the way the ball's been flying and he's hitting against lefties it's hard not to.
  18. league average OBP is usually right around .330. OPS is a little trickier because you generally tie it to position. .800 is a benchmark for most offensive positions you should be able to get atleast that much production. For middle infielders and catchers the number drops to more like .740- .750 for a respectable starter.
  19. I would say that his value would be rather variable for different organizations. He's had some solid performances and has some nice tools and has been young for his levels, but there hasn't been a tremendous amount of great stats. So I could see some teams really liking him and others not valuing him hardly at all.
  20. As I had commented in another thread when only Krivisky was denying the rumor it was meaningless but know that Melvin has weighed in with a cryptic comment like "his name never came up" we can read the tea leaves better. There's nobody quite as sly when it comes to trade talk misdirection as DM. What "his name never came up" means could be is Adam Dunn talk or my favorite interpretation. His name never came up because we were just discussing all the other players to be involved. Doug's a good guy, but taking him at face value during trading season is pretty much like expecting to vote for a clean politician in Chicago.
  21. I think obobo has some pretty good counter points, and despite the access I wonder how much can you really add about a player in just a month? The Power 50 kind of serves that functionality in tracking these things. Perhaps it would be better to do it more as a prospect profile type of thing and have it added to the players profile in the database. Maybe add some kind of voting mechanism to ask the adopters for an update on specific players that have generated more interest.
  22. Or perhaps the crafty Yost figured the best time to start Cappy was with a completely rested pen with his stopper throwing the next day? It's not like this will somehow mean Cappy gets more starts than anyone else in the second half.
  23. That's too bad the denial came from Krivisky because if it had been Doug "when it comes to big deal I'll lie through my teeth" Melvin a denial would have been a license to print Jersey's
  24. I remember looking at some base running stuff I think at Baseball prospectus and in terms of calculating base running effects base advancement was generally more important than stolen bases. Of that the ability to go first to third was the most important. I don't recall any hard numbers, but they were large enough to be worth consideration for similar ball players about 5 runs I'd say. That said a base clogger is going to have a much smaller impact on other players because he's only going to be in position to interfere with the other base runner a fraction of the time they'd have chances to go first to third.
  25. Apparently the Mets have contact Houston about Oswalt, and he gave some indication he may be willing to waive his no trade clause. He certainly qualifies as a difference maker and though I'm not one for targeting starting pitching with this team he's fairly attractive. It's probably unrealistic because of his salary anyway. I did take a look and I think that Roy's days as a top flight starter are coming to an end relatively soon his K rate has dropped all but one year since 2001 and his K/BB rate his generally ticked up. This year he seems to have made some adjustment to his walk rate to actually boost his K/BB rate for this year only. At his current pace of decline he'd be an almost sure bet to have a K rate under 6/9innings next year which puts him into the average range of starting pitching.
