  1. I would imagine this make Shane Peterson expendable.
  2. Got this from Adam McCalvy's Twitter feed. I think this is the biggest thing this acquisition does. It sets Stearns up with a lot of flexibility during the offseason. Going in we had a big hole at 3rd, now that's possibly filled (but could still be upgraded in the right deal), or we can trade any of Segura, Gennett, other misc. infielders without worrying about opening another hole. It gives Stearns options and negotiating power since as of now we have bodies to fill all our positions. I do agree it provides a lot of flexibility and if somebody does get traded it doesn't create a hole. I don't think it was mentioned yet but if none of those guys are traded I wouldn't be surprised to see Villar get a shot at CF, or at least a backup. If Santana can play CF, I'm sure Villar can too.
  3. I was listening to conference call Stearns had with reporters and he would not address it at all. Wouldn't say if is somebody ranked higher than Betancourt, a potential rule 5 guy or the timeframe except it would be completed during the off season.
  4. I agree that Gennett could be in trouble at some point when everyone around him has versatility and he has none. Still hard to ignore that Gennett is a better hitter against righties than all of them.
  5. Its way early, but the new guy at GM is really underwhelming so far....... I trust the guy who worked in the front office of the Astros much more than the Astros sports writer.
  6. I know infielders have been mentioned as possible rule 5 selections but they could also take a flier on somebody like Johnny Venters and see what he looks like in spring training. If it is not working out he can be sent back to the Rays, if he looks anything like before he can be the closer and potential nice asset at the deadline.
  7. There are a couple of guys from the Pirates that could potentially play 3B, Gamache and Moroff. Also Fontana from the Astros, who Stearns should be familiar with.
  8. Not that is matters, but I didn't think you could do that in baseball? I always thought that was more of a football thing with the draft picks. For baseball I thought you get the original list and that is the list you will pick from no matter what. The rules might have changed but the Indians got Brantley instead of Green because of the Brewers performance post trade.
  9. I think Stearns can get somebody as good as and probably better than Perez in the upcoming rule 5 draft. There should be players around 23-25 years old that can play second, short and third like Perez, have limited power like Perez but get on base at a much higher rate.
  10. If it was between Houle and Roache I would keep Houle as catcher can be hidden as Arizona showed last year. Roache doesn't provide much of anything at the big league level right now. Maybe a team in the AL that doesn't use position players as much could keep him as a power hitting bat off the bench but not likely.
  11. That is great that he addressed his anxiety issues. However, he is still 39 and hasn't played in the majors for three full seasons, he will probably have to play in the minors for a bit if he wants to get back in the big leagues.
  12. It is kind of a far out idea but in theory I could perhaps see it happen. It would certainly appease the union adding 25 additional major league jobs. The scheduling could be an issue but maybe it can be seen as built in bye days for each team. With an odd number of teams each team would get an additional 4 days off, maybe during the May - early September time period. I don't know if it would work to have players affiliated with teams as I think it could impact the integrity of the game for example if Matt Clark was batting against the Brewers in a close game last year or Jim Henderson is trying to close out a game. Maybe MLB would force teams to release players if they have an opportunity to play for this team or the team could protect a certain amount of players who meet the criteria. Also have to give the GM of this team flexibility to remove players who are not producing and I don't know if the 15 reserve players would be enough over the course of the season. Perhaps once September rolls around all players on the AAAA team have an opportunity to latch on with a MLB team for the playoff stretch and could be eligible to be added to the playoff roster.
  13. Should be an interesting week for additions to and removals from the 40 man roster as rule 5 eligible players have to be added by this Friday.
  14. If he didn't have that injury toward the end of the year I think it would be much easier to move him. If the Brewers take on $20 million his average salary is around the same as the qualifying offer, of course the years are still an issue. If he has a good first half I think they might get some offers. The Tigers already got burned by one former Brewers with a big contract and their prospects are not that great so I don't know if there is a fit here.
  15. Service time had nothing to do with Perez, it was options. Service time and options don't really have much to do with each other. They put Rivera on the 40 man prior to the 2015 season because they didn't want to lose him to the rule 5 draft, doesn't mean he will get called up to the majors. He can still develop.
  16. They don't want to risk losing him because they feel he can help the team someday in the future.
  17. And That makes a great point, it seems like Braun is here forever but by the time these talented guys in the lower minors are ready for the big leagues Braun will be at or near the end of his contract and Davis will be long gone by then unless extended. Santana is no sure thing either and some of these guys in the minors will be busts so no real need to worry about all of these great outfielders the Brewers have and where they will play. Just continue to develop and stockpile these high ceiling guys no matter the position.
  18. That is a good thing for the Brewers. Play a bunch of games in the summer and as few as possible in September. One of the reasons attendance was still good this year.
  19. We will know substantially who is available in the rule 5 draft by November 20th. Guys could be removed after that date but rule 5 eligible guys cannot be added after it.
  20. If it was between Rivera and Perez I think Rivera having multiple option helped. I don't know if I would have kept Perez over Herrera but Counsell seems to really like him so maybe Stearns is trying to work with Counsell.
  21. It is naive to think Krods off the field issues don't impact his value. As soon as somebody trades for him somebody in the media will pull a Michael Cohen and no team wants to deal with that.
  22. Good to see you got a new crystal ball.
  23. A minor league contract sure. However he is going to be 31 before the start of next season, hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2012 and has had two Tommy John surgeries. Probably a long shot at best.
  24. They still do GBA before the 7th inning stretch. I believe they have been doing it since 2002 so doubt they stop now.
