  1. I'll probably combine morel hunting with one or two canoe trips this spring along the yaharaa, kickapoo or maybe the Wisconsin.
  2. I sure as heck hope so. I took a beating from my friends this off-season for continuing to back him. If he can bump up his on base percentage a few points from last year, show a little bit more power with the extra muscle he has added and continues to improve his defense I think that everyone will be singing his praises during the next off-season.
  3. I've always thought that an Insiders Guide to Spring Training would be a good feature. It seems that every year there are a whole series of posts for people looking for information about autographs, restaurants, etc... Being able to access Brewerfan from my Blackberry in a more coherent fashion would be awesome!
  4. I would be interested in pinch hitting for Kendall more frequently. Late in a game when we are down by a run or two seems like a good opportunity to get a better bat into the lineup. In the game this evening against the Cubs we really needed a couple of hits and could have easily put in Rivera for Kendall and Nelson in the pitchers spot to get something going during the 8th inning. Instead we trotted Kendall out there to strike out. I was really frustrated with Yost's lack of flexibility when it came to pinch hitting for the starting catcher, and will quickly grow frustrated if Macha continues the trend.
  5. I really hope that Jenkins finds a team that is willing to bring him on for a year or two while they rebuild. It would be nice to see him end his career on a high note. Unfortunately he just isn't a great fit for any team that wants to seriously make a run at the playoffs. Was there even a question about him making the walk of fame? Jenkins was one of the few bright spots on this team during some pretty dark years. He always played hard and he was a class act to boot. I wish that we could have a few more players like him on the team today.
  6. That comment might have been asking him if he is practicing with the AA or AAA squad for spring training. Especially early on in spring training, players are shifted around to different teams to fill spots that were opened up by other minor leaguers that were invited to the MLB camp.
  7. Last month Taco Bell featured the Bacon Cheddar Gordita Crunch. It was amazing. My roommate and I were binging on it so badly that we had to limit ourselves to only eating it on Sundays. Of course that meant that we were each eating 4-5 on a given Sunday. The last day that they featured this glorious treat we decided to go big... We went to McDonalds and ordered Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese Value meals and then crammed the Bacon Cheddar Gordita Crunch in between the patties. I was originally worried about causing some kind of rip in the space time continuum due to the overwhelming deliciousness (and calorie content), but it turns out I should have been more worried about causing a rip in my stomach lining. We were both painfully sick. We documented the momentous occasion fairly well. I'll try to post some pictures so that you know what you missed out on. This last weekend we decided to deepfry a bunch of pepperjack cheese wrapped in bacon. It was glorious. Yes, I am kind of fat.
  8. Hopefully Salome materializes into the MLB player that I think he can be, and doesn't follow the career path of the only other Brewer on that list (Rushford).
  9. Sweet. Have you ever done the tour? Is it as weird as it sounds? Can you just call and set up a tour? So many questions... Edit: So many answers! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2247
  10. One thing that I find interesting is that it was only a couple years ago that we were talking about the glut of first basemen in the system (Prince, Nelson, Hart, etc...) and Sexson / Overby at the MLB level. These things seem to work themselves out overtime, so I'm not too worried about being too stacked at any given position. That being said, I'm not all that interested in drafting first basemen since they seem to be fairly easy to find at the MLB level (aging veterans or pure hitters blocked at other positions seem to be able to make the transition fairly easily.) So unless there is an absolute steal of a first basemen available when the Brewer's pick, I would look at other positions.
  11. I've heard that there is a funeral parlor in Madison that has a display in the basement with a bunch of taximdermied squirrels posed participating in human activities like attending a carnival, playing poker, etc... I guess that they do tours but you have to call ahead and it is kind of on the whim of the owner. I've always wanted to check it out but I can't remember the name of the place and I keep forgetting to ask my coworker who originally told me about it.
  12. I have a blackberry and love it when it works. The full keyboard is super nice and convenient. The problem is that I seem to have some sort of problem with my email connections almost once a week. Usually I can just go on the US Cellular website and reconnect it, but it is a pain and since I travel a lot for work that is not always super realistic. If you're with US Cellular the iphone isn't really an option, but everyone I know with one is extremly happy with their's so you may want to consider switching providers and going with the iphone. I know that is the move I'll be making at the next available opportunity.
  13. That was an interesting read. I've always had the inclination to place a large part of the blame for this mess on the players union and this article just sealed the deal for me. I guess the root of the entire problem though was just that there was too much money floating around for anyone to make a rational judgement call on topic. I'm now for socializing baseball. The sport just can never be pure again as long as the corrupting influence of money is involved. Castro for Commissioner!
  14. I would be surprised if Billings makes the Timber Rattlers at the start of the season. Odorizzi and several others might be a little bit ahead of him, but an injury or two this Spring or early in the season could change that. Since he is a HS guy I would imagine there is a chance he adds a tick or two to his pitches over the course of the years. If he can do that and maintain the control he cites as his strength he could be an exciting prospect. They might also hold him back a little to limit the stress on his young arm that would come with jumping into a full-season team. I wish that I was able to make it down to spring training this year to watch guys like him first hand. He is someone that I would be interested to hear some firsthand brewerfan reports from ST about his stuff. hint hint...
  15. There are lots of posters that I consistently enjoy, but I wanted to throw out a plug for my all time favorite. Batman! It's too bad that he is no longer (as far as I know) a major contributor to the site, because he was awesome.
  16. I just sponsored a family member who is also running a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of one of his friends who has been fighting leukemia for over 6 years and wanted to encourage others to consider doing the same. I know that it is often difficult to reach for the pocket book until you see a disease like this touch your own life, but I really hope that you can make an exception for this cause. Luckily my friend who was recently diagnosed with leukemia has the financial resources necessary to fight the disease, but over the course of his treatments he has met many who aren't so lucky. A few dollars can be the difference from someone getting the treatment that keeps them alive and being forced to play the (heavily stacked) odds for an extra week or two. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is legit and is keeping people alive.
  17. I'm seriously going to miss Jim. He calls the game better than anyone I've heard.
  18. I kind of figured that they were mostly military since there was a comment on their website basically saying that the armed forces had been keeping them from touring. Do they mostly play on and around military bases or do they tour? There songs weren't bad, but it seems like they are really limiting themselves to a niche market.
  19. Without hearing it, I would guess that he made a couple of comments about being confident in his abilities...
  20. Are there any great examples of players that have fallen out of the first round because of their price tag that were signed (for similar money to their expected price) and went on to become high profile stars?
  21. I listened to a couple of random songs. Are all of their tunes about being in the Air Force and the military?
  22. Once the full-blown Spring Training schedule is in effect the minor leaguers are extremely accessible. My favorite part of spring training is watching the minor league teams do fielding drills, play intersquad games, take BP, and play against other opponents on the fields outside the main Maryville complex. Scouts, coaches, reporters, club officials, etc... are all hanging out and usually willing to shoot the breeze with you. I've had many conversations with Melvin, Gord Ash, Reid Nichols, etc... about prospects while sitting on the blechers in the minor league facilities. I haven't seen any of the minor leaguers play live since they left the A team left Beloit, so the spring training was always my opportunity to really study the players in the minor leagues. The only thing that is a little confusing is that players are frequently bumped up to play with the higher level squads during training so unless it is really late in the spring you don't see the teams practicing as a full unit and you have to know where to look for the players.
  23. I had a real good time last night. I have to admit that I wasn't really looking forward to the event, and was going mostly to hang out with my parents. Uek's interviews were pretty poor but everything else was entertaining.
  24. "I actually dont think the brewers have tried to slow down catchers...it just happens because the catchers floundered..." I thought that I remembered reading something where Reid Nichols or someone in a similar position was saying that they like catchers to advance one level per year because that is how long it takes to master the position defensively. Then again I could be totally making that up.
  25. Lucroy is going to be the minor league player that I follow most closely this next year. I think that he will probably be the Brewer's starting catcher in a couple of years and will at least serve as a transition to Lawrie or will allow Lawrie to move to another position that fills a hole for the team. I'm really excited about the progress that he has made defensively and I've never been to worried about his bat. Hopefully he can keep the momentum going this year at AA. Would it be out of the question for him to split the season between AA and AAA? I know that in the past the Brewer's have tried to slow down the speed at which the catchers move through the system.
