  1. They’re forecast to get 2 inches of rain today, with showers lingering into the night. It will be interesting to see if they try to play late on a wet field tonight, play a day-night DH tomorrow, or play on a mutual day off on Wednesday.
  2. Because it’s baseball, Shaw will hit .450 in the second half.
  3. The Brewers are once again #1 in MLB schedule strength, in both ESPN’s and Sagarin’s indices. Upcoming series against Minnesota and Houston won’t change that. They’re also .500 in 20 games against the NL first-place teams.
  4. Lefties are hitting .136 against him. Claudio’s poor numbers against righties and borderline overuse is 70% the result of Chase averaging less than 5 innings per start and Chacin averaging 5.03 innings per start, resulting in the need to reach the end of the line of the bullpen seemingly weekly. 20% of the blame goes to the fact the bullpen has young arms they don’t want to overwork such as Hader, Burnes, Houser and Peralta means the guy who ends up in the unenviable role is Claudio. Even though he deserves a little blame for the poor results against righties, I applaud him for taking the ball without complaint to take one for the team multiple times.
  5. Broxton lands in Baltimore, which is likely a perfect spot to get playing time and rob home runs.
  6. Addison Reed has DFAd by the Twins after signing a big, two-year contract last year. He started out well last year, was overused, and then fell apart. This year he started out poorly in the minors. Perhaps he could be acquired and stashed away for a couple of months to build back his arm strength in hopes that he could be a factor after the all-star break.
  7. They have pushed Davies and Woodruff out of desperation due to the string of extra-inning games, and it’s worked out well. Having a day or two a week of only needing one reliever will likely pay dividends in terms of fresher arms in the second half.
  8. With the way Stearns values 40-man flexibility, there will need to be overwhelming evidence that Rasmussen is “the guy” to put the team over the top for him to be added.
  9. Potential quote of the year from Nats’ pitcher: Doolittle on Joe Maddon after Maddon disrupted his outing by arguing and protesting the game: “Sometimes he has to remind people how smart he is.” Going forward, it would be nice if every single Cubs’ opponent protested the game in the middle of an Edwards outing.
  10. The legend continues.
  11. Prior to the season, considering the timing of playing the stronger teams, I had the Brewers’ path to an 87-75 season as being 21-25 at this point. Instead they’re 27-19.
  12. Brewers are #1 in baseball in innings pitched and second-to-last in quality starts. Things have improved, but the bullpen is still being overused.
  13. A plausible, worst-case scenario for tonight would have been a loss coupled with rain delays, multiple used-up relievers, and a late arrival in Philly. At least that other stuff didn’t happen.
  14. Descalso should get spikes drilled into his shins the next time he does that.
  15. After another Saturday marathon, expect Burch Smith to be optioned, with Hart, Barnes, or Chase eligible to take his place.
  16. If other relievers are doing their jobs, Claudio can resume being a LOOGY, which he’s been effective at and was the reason the Brewers paid a significant price to acquire him.
  17. Is there a list of minor leaguers who need to be added to the 40-man next season? Like last year, those might be candidates to be included on deals.
  18. Fiers: 2 no hitters. Hader: 0 no hitters. Advantage Astros.
  19. And gave up 5 runs total in 5 organizational games.
  20. 6 games over .500 with the toughest strength of schedule in baseball...... I’ll take it!
  21. Since the 18-inning game on Saturday, all Brewer relievers, besides Peralta, are below 20 total pitches. Hopefully they can have a normal bullpen game on Wednesday and be at full strength heading into Wrigley.
