  1. Makes Saito seem like a bargain.
  2. I predict at some point in 2011 you'll be back with the Brewers.
  3. In one year the Brewers have gone from Dave Bush, Doug Davis, and Jeff Suppan to Zack Greinke, Shawn Marcum, and Mark Rogers / Chris Narveson. That's an upgrade.
  4. Carlos Gomez just went from being a backup on a bad team to a starter on a good team. Funny how things work out.
  5. To quote Terrell Owens' agent, I can think of 164 million reasons the Yankees won't sign Fielder. This is the amount owed A-Rod, who is already breaking down and is under contract for 7 more seasons, at which point he'll be 42 years old. The Yankees already have their long-term 1st baseman and DH on the team.
  6. This is a time when the Baseball Reference similarity score tells the story. Some of the top 10 similar players: Joe Randa, Edgardo Alfonzo, Melvin Mora, Carlos Baerga, Kevin Seitzer. Cirillo was an above average major league player. Nothing more, nothing less. Not in the same zip code or area code as Molitor and Yount, especially considering the different eras.
  7. I don't see much difference between Joe Blanton and Dave Bush, and Bush is a LOT cheaper.
  8. He'll go to Texas and Mike Maddux will turn him into a 15-game winner. Edit: I also predicted Jose Bautista would go to Toronto and hit 54 HR. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  9. This was also during the period when Uecker was at the absolute top of his game. Add to that Pat Hughes, who was awesome when part of a legitimate broadcast team, and it just added to the excitement that season. Hughes also had a great knack for building up the drama during his postgame shows - sometimes his postgame shows were as fun of a listen as the actual game - and this was a prime example. Regarding Uecker, these two Easter Sunday home run calls and his call on Braun's home run against the Cubs the day they clinched the wildcard are calls I'll be able to recite 30 years from now.
  10. More random stuff you find on the internet. This video, while bizarre, perfectly captures how most fans experienced that day, before the time when home games were on TV.
  11. Is it possible that Rogers' walk ratio would actually be lower in the majors than in the minors? My thinking is that his stuff is so unhittable in the minors that the batters go up thinking of drawing a walk. This means he's got to throw at least 3 strikes to each batter. In the majors, the batters would be more anxious and able to hit the ball, so there would be more at bats where only 1 or 2 strikes thrown would be necessary. Less pitches to each batter = less walks.
  12. Reminds me of the guy in There's Something About Mary who would go ballistic if you touched him behind his ear.
  13. Eliminated because can't afford him or already have a 1B/DH (13): TB, Tor, KC, Cle, Oak, Phi, Fla, Wash, Stl, Cin, Pit, Ariz, SD Here are possible suitors, from least likely to most likely: Least likely: Yankees - Have Teixeria locked up thru 2016 and A-Rod tied up through 2017. A-Rod will be a DH by 2014 and will be owed over $80 M after that. There's just not a long-term spot for Prince. 2nd least likely: Dodgers - Have Loney who they like, but the main thing is the Dodgers are too cheap. Group of teams that traditionally don't pay huge contracts but may try to make a splash (7): Houston, Atlanta, Minnesota (replace Thome), Baltimore, Colorado (replace Helton - imagine how many HR's he'd hit at Coors), Texas, Milwaukee. Mid-market teams that pay big contracts and could use offense (3): White Sox, Detroit, Seattle. Huge market teams that need a 1B / DH (5): Angels, Mets, Cubs, San Fran, Boston. Given this list: 1. Do people agree that the Yankees are NOT a serious contender? 2. Would anyone move a team from my eliminated list to being a possibility. 3. Can someone with a knowledge of each team's prospects eliminate some of the teams not already eliminated based on them not having what the Brewers need.
  14. It would be interesting to see if this happened to anybody pre-1987. Anything after that is suspicious.
  15. I realize that this is a bottom line business, and therefore Peterson will be walking out the door with Macha in early October. However, I really believe that Peterson's spiel on mechanics and keeping pitchers healthy works. It's pretty amazing how healthy our guys without "pre-existing conditions" (Davis and Hawkins) have been this season. Not only have Narveson, Bush, Wolf, Parra, and Gallardo gone the whole season (and made virtually every start when in the rotation) without missing any time due to arm-related problems ... for the most part (recognizing Gallaro's hiccup) they have gotten more effective as the year has gone on - which typically hasn't been the case with Brewer pitchers. I believe that our pitchers coming up that have good stuff (unlike most of the guys mentioned above), like Jeffress, Rogers, Odorizzi, Braddock, Axford, etc., would be well served by the Brewers keeping Peterson on the payroll. It might help with free agents, too. I get some comfort when a pitcher gets a health sign-off from Peterson before signing a big contract. Since Peterson will likely never get another MLB pitching coach job, perhaps he would be willing to stay tied to the Brewer organization and help with the development of talented, healthy arms.
  16. Another aspect of our interleague schedule. We'll be playing teams that are currently #1, 2, 3, and 5 in the majors in runs scored. (The #5 would likely be #4 if Morneau wasn't out). This schedule may not only result in a poor record for the 15 games, but it could wear out our bullpen. We may want to carry an extra arm instead of bringing up a DH for this stretch.
  17. The fan-shaped roof was decided on by a vote of fans. It looks cool but causes the shadows. A simpler roof is in Seattle, where the entire roof moves well past the right field wall. I attended a day game there recently, and there were no shadows on any part of the field at any point during the game. Regarding Miller Park's situation, it will be interesting to see if today's fix will allow the batter to see the spin of the pitch.
  18. I guess Chris Dickerson wasn't available.
  19. Alcides Escobar Jonathan LucroyLorenzo CainJohn AxfordZach Braddock This isn't the Fielder, Weeks, Braun, Hart, Hardy group that joined the team over the course of 3 seasons in the mid 2000's, but for all coming on board in one season, this is a very good group, perhaps as good of a group to join the Brewers in one season in franchise history. We should have players to man the 3 toughest defensive positions on the field locked up for at least the next 5 years, and all 3 have some offensive promise. The pitchers, if they stay healthy, should at least fill in very ably the back end of the bullpen (unless Braddock joins the rotation). The fact that the team has played much better baseball as each of these players replaced a veteran on the roster, validates that they are winning-type players. The only minor disappointment from this class is that it doesn't include a top of the rotation starting pitcher. It would be great to back this class up with Lawrie / Rogers / Jeffress in 2011 or 2012. Then the success of the franchise in this decade will be determined by how many of the current Timberrattler pitching staff pans out for the class of 2013.
  20. About one win worth of offense over a full season worth of PA.So he's one win worth of offense worse than the 2nd best position player on the Mariners. He's got to have some trade value.
  21. How about we invent a stat that shows how Gomez wins 10 games a season with his speed and defense. He's not that worse than Franklin Gutierrez, is he?
  22. The Braves have a paid attendance of under 17,000 last night (looking on TV, actual attendance was well under 10,000). The Reds and Padres struggle to draw much over 20,000. This is really sad. It's quite possible that a majority of NL playoff games will be played in non-soldout parks. It makes you appreciate the incredible crowds that little ol' Milwaukee continues to draw, but it makes me worry that if Brewer fans ever feel turned off by the team again (like near the end of the Selig / Prieb administration), that even winning may not draw them back.
  23. It still amazes me that Manny Parra and Dave Bush have gotten much worse after 2008 - from being young #3 types with decent upside to barely hanging on to stay in the big leagues.
  24. I initially read "RP" as Right-handed Pitcher. For a second, I thought, "That's Parra's problem, he's throwing with the wrong hand". Regarding the opening post, those are some eye-opening numbers. Looking at major league team stats, all but 2 AL teams have much lower ERA's than the Brewers do, and they've got a DH to deal with. The AL has a lot of pitching depth, and it would be a good idea to take a chance on their leftovers than on NL scrubs like Davis, Hoffman, and Wolf.
  25. Darryl Hamilton started for 10 years as a major leaguer, primarily in center field. He was one of the most consistent players in Brewer history, with a batting average around .290-.300 and OBP around .360 just about every year of his career. He was an above average fielder and baserunner. His game was very good in the mid '90's, where you didn't expect every position to produce 20 HR's. If we're indeed past the steroid/HGH era, then I see Cain as a Hamilton type who you can just plug into CF for the next 10 years. Of course this is my view after seeing only with minor league stats and his handful of major league appearances. Can somebody who has seen him play more often and was a Brewer fan in the '90's confirm or negate this comparison?
