  1. Stick him in left field 160 games a year and let him continue his hall of fame career. Nearly every hall of famer has down years (Andre Dawson had several 2-year stretches where he hit under .250). He'll probably have a strong last 2 months and then hit 40 dongs with 120 RBI's again next year.
  2. If Corey plays his age 28-30 years like a player with a Baseball Reference "Similar Batters through Age 27" rating (and similar hair style), George Foster, then it will be a very good deal for the Brewers. http://www.baseball-refer...layers/f/fostege01.shtml
  3. If it's $25 million, is this a bad sign for Prince / Boras? Is someone really going to guarantee Prince $100 Million more than we're guaranteeing Corey Hart, when Hart is coming off a better season than Prince at the plate (and Hart being more valuable on defense and at the plate than Prince)?
  4. I played summer ball in th late '80's and thought is was awesome. There were some serious players - I believe Larry Hisle, Jr. (Homestead), Craig Counsell (Whitefish Bay), and Paul Wagner (Germantown) all played at that time, so talent wasn't an issue (and these guys somehow went on to bigger and better things without playing Legion ball - but I understand times are different now). What made it great was: 1. I got to play high school golf and baseball - didn't have to decide between one or the other.2. Our games were played at 8:15 pm, and we didn't have to wake up at 6am the next day for school - a much better atmosphere than 4pm starts.3. We didn't play half the season with our hands down our pants because of cold weather. This may be a reason Milwaukee and the lakeshore communities stick with summer ball. With the breeze off the lake, spring teams may never play a game with the temperature above 45. That's not baseball.
  5. You're right. It was 1988.
  6. 1991: July 27th: 15 1/2 games out of first place, 15 games under .500 ... 4 weeks later: 7 1/2 games out of first place. I remember genuine excitement that we were going to make a miracle run - perhaps because of what took place the previous 2 seasons. 1990: August 26th: 11 games out. Ended season 2 games out. 1989: July 18th: 12 games out of first place, in 6th place ... August 18th: 1/2 game out of first place - had a chance to move into first but lost that day in 14 innings in a nationally televised game in front of 50,000 fans (a very rare occurrence in those days). They never recovered (or ran out of gas). 2010: July 21st: 11 1/2 games out of first place ... July 25th: 8 games out. [Note to Brewer management - if you read this, do NOT let it stop you from making a trade for Fielder or Hart if the return is appropriate - these instances are very rare and they still didn't result in playoff berths].
  7. Ozzie Smith as manager?
  8. If we did acquire Eveland, then we should also get Greg Aquino, Dave Krynzel, and Johnny Estrada so we'd have all 6 players involved in that trade on the roster.
  9. The Rangers don't have an ace, and they seem to be doing alright - beat the Cubs last night 2-1 to go 4 games up in the AL West.
  10. That would be cool for Hoffman to say, screw it, get juiced up, and start getting his fastball up there at 84 MPH.
  11. I'd narrow it down to Hoffman blowing a lot of games and Davis and Suppan averaging a little over 4 innings in their 9 starts (meaning a whopping 40+ innings being covered by the bullpen in those starts leading to overwork, in addition to another 5 being covered in that 14 inning debacle). DM's got to start treating this like it's a young man's game.
  12. This is being conservative:1. Replace 5 blown saves with, say, 2. (+3 wins)2. Replace Hawkins' meltdown in Chicago with an Estrada or Braddock inning. (+1 win)3. Replace Davis's and Suppan's starts with ones by Narveson or Parra. (+1 win)4. Eliminate at least 10 innings of unnecessary bullpen work from short starts or Hoffman blown saves leading to 14 inning games. (+2 wins)4. Replace Zahn, Counsell, and Edmonds with backups or minor leaguers (net 0) Total: 7 more wins. 1st place.I won't even mention how much more money it costs for those 35+ year olds instead of minor league replacements, but let's just say that we could afford CC and Sheets with it.
  13. I'll take a stab - the Nats.
  14. PLEASE! Anywhere but Chicago.
  15. Texas: 2008 ERA 5.37; 2009 ERA 4.38; 2010 ERA 3.68. Brewers: 2008 ERA 3.85; 2009 ERA 4.83; 2010 ERA 5.07. Tell me again why we had the falling out with Mike Maddux? (Note, removing CC from the 2008 number, we still had a 4.07 ERA)
  16. In my years watching the Brewers, I've seen life cycles of teams that have led to this point. A bunch of young guys come up and they rely on the emotion of the home crowd and have a very good home record and very poor road record. Then as they become veterans they develop a mindset that helps them win on the road (but perhaps that same mindset hinders their ability to win at home).
  17. Doug Jones: 1997 - Age 40, 36 saves, 0.8 WHIP, 2.02 ERA1998 - Age 41, 12 saves, 1.4 WHIP, 5.17 ERA Just sayin'
  18. I get a sense that it's 50/50 that Macha won't see June 1. That's around the time the '82 Brewers made their change (with a 22-23 record).
  19. 6.8 Billion people in the world, and he was the one most qualified to do this job?
  20. Melvin didn't know that Sheets was going to get hurt when making the trade for CC. He was thinking that he was going to have a beast of a rotation heading into the postseason. Remember, after CC became a Brewer, Sheets started the all star game. It could have been a completely different postseason if Sheets hadn't gotten hurt. They wouldn't have had to use CC on 3 days rest as often, either, if Sheets was healthy. A rested CC, healthy Sheets, along with Gallardo would have beaten the Phillies, IMO.
  21. This guy has got to have a very short leash. If Prince leaves, we're likely headed to a period of not being in contention. We need to win NOW. We can't waste a season waiting to see if a low upside guy can get through 5 innings without exceeding 110 pitches and a run per inning. If Davis is given another two starts, it's got to be with the idea that this is his last chance - next guy in if he fails. A history lesson. The 1992 Brewers were the best team in baseball - except they suffered through about 15 horrendous starts by veterans Ron Robinson and Bruce Ruffin early in the season before handing over starting duties to a younger pitcher. The delay in cutting the cord on the veteran, low upside guys definitely cost the Brewers the division title and, the way they were playing the 2nd half, likely cost them a world championship. The next offseason they lost Paul Molitor to free agency, finished in last place, and it took 14 years for the franchise to sniff an above .500 record again. I just don't want to look back 10 years from now thinking, "man that 2010 team would have been great if only they weren't so tied up in trying to get their $4 million worth from Doug Davis".
  22. I can't see him making another start in the near future. Could Melvin make a deal with Davis that we he would DFA him with the contingency that he accept the minor league assignment and then come back to Milwaukee in a month? Is there a union rule against that type of handshake agreement? Without that agreement, the worst case (or perhaps the best case at this point) is that another MLB team would pick him up and the Brewers would be on the hook for the remaining salary.
  23. Actually another position player, Mather, pitched the 19th. Why the Mets were sacrifice bunting with a position player pitching, I have no idea. Now it's 1-1 in the 19th.
  24. Felipe Lopez is pitching in a tie game! And Kyle Lohse is playing left field!
