    I'd say Miller is better than slightly above average. He's pretty darn good. And he comes cheap for three years.

    This keeps coming up. It's the Scouting Director, not the GM, who runs the draft -- that's Ray Montgomery & not David Stearns. Assuredly the GM is in the room, doubtlessly he's had several conversations with the Scouting Director in terms of learning what's up and imparting his thoughts on organizational direction (and you'd figure he & the SD are pretty close to being on the same page or else the SD would be someone else), and you have to figure he's aware of the biggest names. But the draft is the Scouting Director's baby. The GM doesn't run in the start calling the shots. GM will always have final say on a pick. Obviously when you get into later rounds the GM will just listen, but when it comes to the first pick Stearns will definitely have a say if he wants. If he wants a catcher he is going to get one. I agree Stearns won't be running out and deciding the 15th round pick, but the first couple he should and most likely will have a lot of say in who is picked. Those first couple picks are a big deal right away and Stearns is the one building this team. He needs to get the guys he wants. "In 2001, Beane famously threw a chair in anger after then-scouting director Grady Fuson used one of Oakland's first-round picks on Washington high school pitcher Jeremy Bonderman, the kind of high-upside, high-risk selection that Beane disdained."

    The other thing is that these guys are still "youngish" in age. Not sure on how much control Brewers have over them but if the rebuild takes three seasons (not unreasonable at all given the depth in the minors) and these guys reach close to their ceilings then you have very solid contributors on a contending team. Maybe that's a stretch but could factor in to Stearns' decision making.

    Well it seems like the board will be more active than usual this off-season.

    Flores has gotten on base at a great clip his entire minor league career. As has been mentioned, this provides a lot of flexibility and solidifies the bench. Curious to see what happens with Lind....sounds like a lot of teams are interested.

    Villar played 2B, 3B, SS, and OF last year. He's much more versatile than Gennett and he can run. Good bench, spot starter guy as long as he can play defense adequately and not run into outs.

    I believe I saw a quote from Mozeliak saying that they may change it up this year given the Lynn situation. Good news for Price and Greinke.

    I always thought one song before the game was enough. It was like after 9/11 everyone decided that singing more would help defeat the evils of the world.

    Ned Yost's teams have won more games. That does not make him a better manager. Not to mention, even if that imaginary lineup came to fruition the starting pitching would still be horrible.

    Sort of like when the Brewers over the years had Weeks at 2B, Betancourt at SS, Fielder at 1B. Braun for a year at 3B? That sort of luck? Well that's actually in addition to luck but yeah that makes a difference too.

    Sometimes the "why" is just luck. Ground balls don't find holes, line drives find gloves, etc.

    Every report I saw said the Brewers were only being used and Abreu wasn't ever going to come here. All we were doing was bidding up the White Sox. Maybe that would have changed if we were offering miles above the White Sox, but who would have honestly thought that was a good idea back then? No one. Not to mention, projecting a Cuban player's success is not a sure thing. Be kinda risky to outbid the Sox only to have the guy flop.

    Just out of curiosity, how many extra wins would you say Joe Maddon is worth? Also, why do you think CC isn't as good of a manager?

    He's team president in Chicago. Not sure how that works in terms of player acquisition but Jed Hoyer is the GM. And yes, if Craig Counsell had the same squad I imagine the results would be similar.

    I was never really a fan. Can't say exactly why other than he always just rubbed me the wrong way.
