  1. Any thoughts on Vargas as a closer next year? He throws hard, pitches well (if not better) out of the stretch, and seems to be good at pitching out of jams (forcing popups, getting strikeouts, etc). He'll be cheaper than any free agent closers, and it would be nice to have another option besides Turnbow.
  2. Wrist injuries obviously take time to recover, as we have seen with Brad Nelson. It seems like a good idea to me to give Weeks plenty of rest as things continue to heal. Maybe have him and Graffanino start every other day.
  3. The guys who strike a pose every time they hit a HR generally help a team win more than guys who hustle to 1B on every weak groundout. I get annoyed every time ESPN and All-Star fan ballots tell me how great Eckstein is...because he's not. He's just an infield version of Juan Pierre, and probably shouldn't be a starter on most teams.
  4. Gary Sheffield David Eckstein David Ross Boof Bonser Neifi Perez I can't hate Carlos Zambrano as much as I should, because its fun to watch him flip out, but I'd have to put everyone on the Cubs and Twins rosters down as honorable mentions.
  5. Get rid of divisions, just use a 16 (14 for the AL) team table per league. League winners play each other in the World Series. I don't expect anybody to agree with me, but I think it would be cool.
  6. I did the same thing for my dad's old TV. It cost me about $100 to rent a U-haul and move it from Hartland to Madison. Not a bad deal.
  7. Pretty sure Turnbow tested positive for Andro, which at the time could be purchased at GNC. Not quite the same as something that is not legal in the United States without a prescription (or in Bonds case, something that isn't even intended for humans).
  8. Interesting, I figured he would have pitched more in those "Johnny Wholestaff" games in '03 where he started, but only went 3 innings or so.
  9. Yes. I figured the Twins' luck would run out as soon as the other teams in the AL Central stopped being completely horrible. (S)crappy battlers who "play the game the way its meant to be played" are fine when you're playing most of your games against the Royals and Tigers from a few years ago, but that won't cut it against decent teams. FWIW, the Twins' record against the AL Central between 2001-2005 is 226-152, but their record against the East and West during that time is 170-171.
  10. I insisted on buying former Ministry and current REM drummer Bill Rieflin an ice cream cone when I ran into him and Chris Connelly in Chicago. Then he mentioned me by my initials in his blog.
  11. This makes me miss Zaza Pachulia. Oh dear.
  12. I made one about 4 years ago, before every myspace page made your browser crash, because all of my livejournal friends told me to. I haven't logged in in about a year. My wife found me via that Brew Crew dude's page, so its not all bad, but I can't think of any other positive aspects of the site. What happened to people/bands/movies having normal web sites? Myspace is geocities*10000000.
  13. Yes, just like when DM denied that we were trading Sexson and Overbay.
  14. Is this an official email, or just something that somebody made up?
  15. Mench is surprisingly not terrible vs righties in his career (.737 OPS since 2004). Good bench player, and a near-perfect option for a platoon with Jenkins or Gross. Despite all the negative comments about his attitude, he always seems to be the first guy out on the dugout steps high-fiving his teammates after making a nice play. I'd like it if he were a little cheaper, but really I can't complain too much - he's done just what is expected of him.
  16. My guess is that Sheets gets it. If for some reason he can't go, Gallardo makes sense just because he'll be on the right number of days rest.
  17. I just noticed something kind of weird - his strikeout rate is the highest it has been since 2004, which was his worst season of his career. Could he be "pressing", or trying to hard to get strikeouts? I'm reluctant to consider a higher strikeout rate to be bad thing, but maybe that's just not the type of pitcher he is. Last season (and arguably his best), his strikeout rate was at its lowest since his rookie year with Arizona.
  18. The Rockies' pitching was also bad. I'm willing to give these guys a break for not being as sharp as they should be after a long break. Capuano's numbers seem pretty similar to his 2004 and 2005 seasons, aside from allowing a greater number of hits. While he hasn't been as unlucky as Dave Bush was earlier in the season, I do think luck plays a part of it. I'm not sure if his walk rates will ever drop as low as they were in 2006 again, but if his BABIP drops back down to more normal levels, he'll remain a solid middle-rotation guy. And if he can do whatever it was he did last year to cut his walk rate in half, we have ourselves a borderline all-star again.
  19. Most international players aren't free agents. In most countries other than the US, players are rarely traded, and most of the better players don't ever make it to free agency. When a player changes teams, the teams agree to a transfer fee (cost to buy player's contract/negotiating rights), and then the new team has to agree to terms with the player. This is what happened with Matsuzaka, and that's just the way things work overseas. Like you said, he wouldn't have been released to enter a draft, and he probably wouldn't have been released without a substantial transfer fee.
  20. I'd welcome the Rampage back, myself.
  21. Yeah, its fine to complain about speed/baserunning abilities, but I can't think of any situation where having a runner on base is worse than no runner on base, even if that runner is slower than Bob Hamelin and Joe Vitiello combined.
  22. I can't even begin to fathom what he means by that, or what kind of point he's trying to make. Isn't clogging the basepaths good? I can't imagine any situation where getting on base would be a bad thing.
  23. Personally, I was waiting for a Russian announcer to interview Vlad.
  24. It seems like that's all there is to the show...4 hours of "LOL GREENIE IS A GIRLY MAN AND GOLIC IS MANLY AND FAT LOL". They're fine when they actually talk about sports, though.
  25. highlight so far is Bonds "I don't even know what a commissioner does!" comment.
