  1. Ugh! I just tuned in to the Hunstsville game in time to hear Butler is out with an injury, but I missed what the injury was. That stinks. Update: The game recap says its a chest injury, I wonder if he pulled something batting in the top of the inning.
  2. I agree that its better than nothing. Peralta was a pretty big signing too, he got like $400 K. However, when you see a team like the Reds spend more on 2 guys last year than we've spent total since 2005, its disappointing, especially when you consider the money we saved by not having an academy. Those 2 Reds signings are both ranked among there top 10 prospects.
  3. If its not big ticket guys that make us active, its certainly not quantity. We were the only team that didn't have an entry in the DSL until this year, and even now we only have a handful of players there. Our biggest signing last year was for just $225 K. Just 5 of the P50 are international signings. I don't mean this as a critism at all, as I don't think they should waste money if they feel its inefficient, and I think alot teams flush money there. I'm just excited they are now confident enough to become a player there.
  4. Very exciting. Sounds like he's not just toolsy, but a great character guy too. Corner power is the biggest weakness iin the system, so its extra cool that he addresses that. Its good that MLB is helping teams make safer investments. I wonder if this is part of why the Brewers seem more aggressive internationally this year. Your the 2nd person I've seen comment that. I'm curious as to what makes you believe that. The Brewers haven't ever been much of a factor their. They've never had a 7 figure signee. Ben Badler, in a recent column where he broke teams into tiers based on there historical involvement their, lumped us in a lower tier of teams he called bargain hunters.
  5. Thats great news on McKelvie, a toolsy, high ceiling guy with work ethic. I didn't expect to see him signed anytime soon. He was reportedly looking for big money, which was why he slid to round 25. However, I'm going to speculate that he didn't get huge money, because MLB wouldn't make his signing official yet if he received a well over slot bonus. Great job by the Brewers scout who knew this kid well enough to realize how badly he wanted to start his very promising pro career.
  6. Yeah, Kershaw and Volstad were so terrible down the stretch last year after getting called up from AA. Braddock might be more dominant than them because he's used in relief. Braddock could be for the Brewers what K-Rod was for the Angels when they won the series.
  7. Tom Haudricourt just ranked our pitchers over the weekend. He had Rogers 3rd and Butler 6th. He has plenty of inside info when making these rankings. You won't have vindacation until these guys have major league careers. Plenty of others have mentioned Arnetts far superior stuff, but he's more than that even. He has great size and strenth. He is an awesome athlete, with great body control. He was considered the teams best dunker when he was with Indiana's basketball team. He has a clean bill of health, whereas Braddock has already had TJ, plus a 2nd surgery. He has terrific work ethic. He is the total package. He is a top of the rotation pitcher.
  8. I like Baez, but he makes good money, so I'd rather give a shot to some intriguing in house candidates 1st. John Axford has been a strikeout machine this year, pitching in the mid-90s and topping out at 98. Zack Braddock is another, he's too good for the minors.
  9. The Brewers should have a pretty good idea of his age, as he is the brother-in-law of Brewers Latin America scout Freddy Torres.
  10. He has a fragile elbow, and other issues, and will be a reliever for the immediate future. Its hard to bank on benefitting from those cheap years he could have at 30 if used as a starter, its better to get value from him while we can. It would be a shame to waste what could be his best years wasting his time in the minors.
  11. Another strong outing for fireballing John Axford tonight. I could see him and CV switching spots real soon.
  12. Thats the argument everyone is making, if Gamel doesn't even have a part time starting job send him to AAA. Bring up Heether to platoon with Counsel. Heether is actally outhitting what Gamel did in AAA. We don't need another lefty bat on the bench, Cat and Gerut need more ABs.
  13. Keeping the ball in the infield seems like a good idea tonight, backup catcher Mike Roberts is playing CF.
  14. Vasquez is signed through next year, at $11.5 million. With Lowe, Kawakami, Jurrjens, Hansen all under control next year, and an option on Hudson, they could make a move. Obviously they'll want the best hitter they can get, or a package of hitting prospects.
  15. I agree with that. I think the right time to get that pitcher who is a longterm solution is next offseason. I don't think what we do now will impact that.
  16. While I agree with that, McClung is just as good as Washburn, Bush will be back quick, and I'm thinking Braddock will be replacing Narveson very soon. I'd rather save our prospects for an impact pitcher. If the Braves keep fading, Javier Vasquez should become available for prospects.
  17. I was OK with Gamel being the lefty part of a platoon, but now that he's not even that, he needs to be sent down. Heether can come up and platoon with Counsel at 2B, with McGehee playing fulltime at 3B. There was no way to predict McGehee would turn out this good, or at least have this big of a hot streak.
  18. I hope this thread gets locked, it has nothing to do with baseball.
  19. Why does every single position suddenly need to be filled by a prospect? Are we slashing payroll? Our lineup now isn't all homegrown. We will have cheap players in our lineup soon enough with guys like Gamel, Escobar, and 1 of the catchers. Why do we need 2 young catchers? Where is Taylor Green every going to play? We don't even have a spot for Casey McGehee to play next year. We have some surplus talent, and with it we should be able to aquire a pitcher like Bedard. We won't have to deal anyone earmarked for a future starting role. Then, in the offseason, we can go looking for a young starter. We better off with an established pitcher now than a young guy that might not be a significant upgrade.
  20. The fact that they made Greens DL stint retroactive tells me they expect him back quick, as the minors DL stints are only 7 days. Green could be back by the end of the week, if I'm reading the situation correct. It stinks he had to get hurt when he was hot at the plate.
  21. And how did that turn out for Tampa? They got nothing for Josh Hamilton. Cinci picked him up, let him mature, then traded him for Edison Volquez. Great move for Cinci, fruitless move for Tampa. I am incredibly disappointed in Jeffress, but I'm not ready to condemn for life a 21 year old.
  22. McClung, as a starter last year, was as good as 4 of our opening day starters this year. McClung is clearly a better pitcher right now than he was at this time last year. He deserves to start, and I'll predict he's pitched his last game in relief for us. Dillard has been mediocre at AAA. Burns, Cody, and Butler would be better choices to start than him.
  23. The Axford audio is good stuff, as is the article about him Mas Haas linked to in the Huntesville thread. That article describes him pitching in the mid 90s and topping out at 98. Its promising that he credits our minor league pitching coordinator, Lee Tunnel, with mechanical changes that have unlocked his now overpowering velocity. He wasn't close to being on my radar when he started the year in BC bullpen, but now he could be in Milwaukee any day now. A true testament to perseverance. Axford would be a perfect replacement to fill McClungs bullpen role, as I'm predicting McClung becomes a productive starter and remains there longterm. Also, of course, Axford is Canadian.
  24. I agree with this. This team could really use a big time hitting SS, and Hardy's numbers should start to even out pretty soon. If/when he goes on one of his trademark hot streaks, he could carry this team for a good long while. Also, the fact that Hall has played himself out of the lineup, while McGehee has stepped forward, helps.
