  1. The article sucks because it doesn't tell us about the competitions defensive misplays. Lots of teams have multiple bad defenders. Look at how funny it is watching Chris Duncan or Pat Burrel or Carlos Lee or Alphonso Soriano play LF. We've repeatedly seen Edwin Encarnocion misplay a ball into LF only to be further misplayed by Adam Dunn. Neyer doesn't offer a suggestion to who should play 2B instead of Weeks. He discounts the fact that we have quality defenders with Cameron in CF and Hardy at SS. Most blatantly, he tells us the Brewers desperately need to do something to prevent runs from scoring, even though only 1 NL was better at it than the Brewers last year.
  2. I'd love it if we got the oppurtunity to pick between McClung and Suppan, as that would mean Gallardo, Parra, Looper, and Bush were all healthy and pitching well. I might as well ask for a toilet made of gold while we're dreaming. The season just never goes that easy.
  3. Weeks OPS'd over 1.050 in 2003 and 2005. I was not referring to 2007. It only illustrates how difficult it is to hit in the majors. Not just any mediocre AAA vet can do it. Having 92 RBIs with a 774 OPS only means he had some tremenous teammates. He did, Micah Hoffpaurer hit 360. The scouting reports I saw on McGehee described him as a baseball rat with limited tools. The guys that break out late are guys with big batspeed. You've stated that Brian Anderson and Rock gushed about McGehee's batspeed. If they're right, this could be a tremendous scouting find by the Brewers. However, I'm not sure those 2 are guys I trust on the matter, especially after I've read the opposite. I remain skeptical.
  4. Weeks had an OPS over 1.050 in 2 of his 3 minor league seasons.
  5. Its possible to produce a great OPS without hitting 30 homers. The lure of Gamel is he has such an easy swing he might hit for great average. Scouts have claimed he has similarities to Boggs. Boggs had an OPS over 920 6 times. I doubt Gamel hits 360ish like Boggs in those years, but Gamel has more power.
  6. McGehee hits niether righties or lefties. He's never posted an OPS over 776 in the minors. He's had a hot spring, but historically, that doesn't mean much once the regular season starts. I don't like Lamb either, but we need to find a better 3B alternative. I can hope McGehee has somehow evolved into that guy, but thats doubtful considering he just doesn't have the tools to make such a sudden improvement.
  7. If Sheets starts showing signs of being healthy in a few months, team will compete to sign him. That could easily forcea team to sign him before the draft. The Yankees would only give up there 4th rounder, which wouldn't deter them. That would be fine by me, as we'd also then get a quality sandwich pick.
  8. Good news from Ben Badler at BA (subscribers only link), the Brewers have made some fairly high ticket signings. Olivio, previously mentioned by Mass Hass, and speedy athletic SS Andres Martinez are both 17 year olds that have been signed for $225,000 each. Barrini also got 6 figures. Great to add some Latin talent to the system.
  9. I would fine with using Escobar as trade bait at the deadline to add a stud pitcher, even though Hardy is gone after 2010. The Brewers have a massively underrated SS prospect in Brent Brewer, and he will be very ready by 2011. Most don't believe in him now, but it will be much clearer by the end of July who our SS of the future is.
  10. I agree with this. Even if its only a part time platoon, a lefty hitting 3B is needed. Its hard to see how McGehee is any better than Adam Heether. I agree with this too. Lamb was awful for Minnesota last year, and needs to hit alot to make up for his defense. I'm skeptical if he can still do that. I find it interesting that Irribarren started at 3B today, but I'm not sure he's a better hitter than Counsell, at least not yet. Irribarren is a speed option off the bench, but he negates that by being an inefficient base stealer. I do agree we need a RH hitter, but McGehee hasn't played the OF, where a RH bench bat could split time with Nelson if any of our 3 starters were injured. He just isn't a good fit, and isn't that inspiring of a hitter either. After sorting through this roster time and again, I'm coming to the conclusion that it is impossible to predict the 25 man roster, because the players who will form our bench aren't on the team yet. Counsel is the reserve middle infielder, and Nelson has stepped up to grap the most important role on the bench, the lefty swinging power bat, but none of our other options fit our needs. I think Melvin will be busy in the weeks ahead.
  11. That was the stuff Morlan had a few years ago before letting his conditioning go. Now he is 92-94 like Dillard, just without the results.
  12. I think we could have a deep bullpen, even if it lacks an overpowering reliever. I sure hope we don't need Gagne later in the year. If we need a reliever later in the season Omar Aguilara could become an exciting option. He has gotten opportunities in spring so far, and continues to be better than Morlan, just as he was in the minors. Dillard has just as good as stuff as Morlan too, and was also better in the minors last year. I don't see Morlan as a candidate.
  13. That is disappointing. I posting a few times last year about Wright's strong 2nd half stats, including an increased K rate. While he was still a longshot, he put himself on the radar. Sometimes pitchers return from TJ surgury with increased velocity, like Amaury Rivas did last year, and maybe Wright can do the same. With hard work, he could turn this negative into a positive. His timetable should allow him to hit the ground running in 2010.

  19. We've wondered why Irribarren hasn't gotten more of an oppurtunity so far, and now today he gets a suprise start at 3B. Does he really have the arm to be considered an option there? With McGehee and Lamb available, I wouldn't think they're just filling a spot unless they consider him a serious option there. Is the team unimpressed with Mike Lamb? Nelson starting in LF, that should be an everyday occurence as we try to sort out this bench.
  20. While I too am disappointed in the Brewers medical staff, I can't fault them in this situation. Getting the mother of all concussions from landing on your butt isn't exactly normal, and Koskie went from specialist to specialist before he found one who could diagnose his extremely rare condition.
  21. We've had numerous WS champions that arrived there via the wildcard, so I definately think its worthy of recognition. That, and we won more playoff games than the Cubs. What have other teams done for this accomplishment?
  22. Props to JoePepsi for putting Jenkins in the proper light. His career will never be fully recognized because management surrounded him with so many crappy players. ( and trainers)
  23. I enjoyed watching Lorenzo Cain on the WGN broadcast today. Every Lo Cain scouting report calls him smooth, and it doesn't take long to see why. He is Mike Cameron smooth, with what should be a better approach at the plate. He's even built like Cameron. He is an extremely exciting prospect, with no discernible warts. Scouts seemed very impressed with him in the AFL. BA should have had him in there top 100. He is going to see a monster jump next year in that list, if he doesn't lose his eligibility this year. When the light goes on for a player, he happens so fast. Cain is arriving. He might help this year if theres an injury.

  25. I agree. Now that Nelson has evolved into such a patient hitter, he is clearly our best bench bat. He should be the 1st PH off the bench against RHSP. His lack of defensive ability, combined with my desire to get the lead before the late innings, makes Nelson the guy I'd want to use as early as possible. He's not the defender Gabe Gross was, but he has a similar approach at the plate as Gross, and showed more power in the minors than Gross did. My 2 concerns are a RH bat off the bench, and the fact the Macha talks about using Cory Hart in CF, but hasn't followed through on that. It would make it easier to fill out our bench if Hart is the backup CF.
